It will be a challenge to regulate. In essence, the players have the right to earn money from their fame (Name, Image, and Likeness). So, a local car dealer could decide to pay every Bama recruit $100,000 because that recruit’s name, image, and likeness fits its business model.

In reality, that payment is just pretext for: Come to Bama, we’ll pay you $100,000.

The problem with regulation is how do you differentiate “pay for play” v. NIL? You really can’t, so pay for play will become the reality.

I'm afraid you're right, we'll eventually end up with a semi pro league. For me , that will cause me to lose interest.

Just as an aside, being called a loony by the town drunk, or any of the other jackass wannabes hoping to take over for the much-bereaved burro, is like being called ugly by a bulldwag. But please, feel free to carry on until you either get tired of your own bullschytt or finally succeed in drinking yourself into total oblivion But, before committing to a course of action, perhaps you should ask yourself - WWSDD? Run that smack or get schytt-faced drunk without further ado? Of course, the legend would endeavor to do both, as long as the booze, the bullschytt and the good graces of the proprietor held out. To be fair, there was only one donkey - for better or worse. But alas, it seems that Fearless Leader has finally had enough, and the donkey has been taken out back and shot. Farewell and adieu O flea-bitten one. He grazes in Elysium now. Hee-haw.

Couple of points on class comparison. There is some truth to the notion that a Kicker and low ranked anything will weigh you down. It’s one of the reasons I see Rivals as the most accurate. As I remember, they rank based on your first 10 players(our whole class at the moment), which would mean the next high-3* or better will likely move us up quite a bit from 46th ranking they’re currently giving us.
It used the be the first 20 at Rivals. It makes so much more sense than total recruits x ratings.
I think if Rivals were top 10, we’d be way farther up then 46.

But seriously, you can’t give a a team that recruits jillion lower caliber players over one that has at least 20 solids guys.

So, we could have an athlete on a hardship scholarship who makes $100,000/year.?
If his teammate makes $1M a year. $100K would definitely fall under the "hardship" realm.

It's just a matter of time before a stud player returns to college for his final season because he is making more money thru NIL than he is projected to make in the NFL.

Or athletic scholarships might become need based. I can not imagine how a school can justify not charging tuition to a person making a six figure income in part off the name of the school. There will be a long line of programs at a place like UF that believes they are under funded and could use the money going to athletic scholarships going to individually rich people. (That is not the son or daughter of rich people, but someone rich in their own right.)
