Anyone tried Proper 12?
It's McGregor's stuff. I bought a tiny bottle because I was curious thinking it would be trash but it was actually pretty solid
Never actually tried either. The Horse Soldier seems to be a popular gift, either for the bottle design or story. Never heard anything bad about it.@alcoholica
I should have come here for advice but needed something as a gift but had 30 min notice. My BIL is an avid bourbon collector (posted a pic of his wall pages ago) and needed something for him. His mom passed away yesterday morning and Seedy asked me to stop by our new local shop and pick up something unique. The lady showed me a few things but I probably chose the wrong one. I’m not a bourbon drinker.
Horse Soldier is connected to 911 and firefighters I believe. The glass comes from ground zero. Very cool story.
However I went with these that look like wine. (Facepalm) it’s a new local distiller (Castle & Key) and has the horse connection. BIL just bought a share on a thoroughbred.
Do you know anything about either?
Philistine. On Saturday night, I grabbed the trusty plastic jug of Canadian Club from the freezer, poured some in a big cup, dumped a 16 oz bottle of Mountain Dew (zero sugar of course) on top and added some ice... it worked.

Don't hate the playa, hate the game...Really popular drink at the fat chick sororities these days
It's ZERO SUGAR, not diet... what do you take me for?Cmon man. Try a bottle of Mellow Corn or Ten High next time. Live a little.
Actually, since you used diet mountain dew as a mixer you should probably just go straight to Cisco.

The Pinhook has a following because people like to collect the various labels and verticals. They used to source all of their whiskey, and probably still do. I bought a bottle because it was the first release of Castle and Key Rye, but I haven't opened it. Haven't heard anything bad here either.
At the end of the day, if he's a collector, you probably aren't going to find anything that would really "wow" him. So what you got is as good as anything you could find. It's the thought that counts, and I'm sure he appreciates it. I would have probably asked what he liked to drink most and steered you toward a store pick, since so many stores up there have them. Something like a Russell's Reserve, Knob Creek, or a Four Roses Barrel Proof pick. Or if you lived near a distillery, to see if they had any distillery only releases.
The castle and key bottles are popular with the bourbon club I'm a member of. They also like the horse soldier.
I think the castle and key is popular because the distillery was originally owned by Col. EH Taylor. It closed down a long time ago and fell into disrepair. The distillery was restored and recently reopened. It was featured on the Netflix documentary Neat: The Story of Bourbon.
Just so you know, my mom passed away about 15 years or so ago and I'm still down about it. I suspect a nice bottle of bourbon would cheer me up too (it's the thought after all). If it will make it easier for you, I can swing by the house and pick it up when we pass through Kentucky on a trip in June. Thanks, like you said there’s probably nothing that I could get that could wow it. It’s the thought.

Wisconsin. My sisters and I have a house on Lake Michigan. Just like the ocean only no salt and no sharks.
