I feel like if it were just two guys it's Stapleton and Bateman. Sale can take over full O-line duties or we get someone else. Same with LBs. Let Mike Pete. coach 'em all or get someone better in there to help with the Inside guys. Maybe it's Colbert and we can bring in Ike Hilliard. Whatever we do, we need to bring in someone to help with play calling and clock management. Those were two really weak spots that Napier cannot let be an issue in year 2. It's such an easy fix. Bring in an experienced guy that knows what he's doing with the passing game since we have a decent scheme running.

Yeah, I say to fire Bateman and put Mike Peterson over inside and outside linebackers.

Technically, Sale is the OC.

They shouldn’t bring in another OC unless it’s going to be a young innovative coordinator.

Fill Bateman’s position with a recruiting monster. And make him in charge of special teams. I think we need a special-teams coordinator more than an OC.
I think we need a DC more than anything else. The waterhead we have in that position now is worse than nothing.

Anae and Bud Foster. Tons of experience and may even teach karl how to manage the clock and game in situ. Foster was also a part of the ST with VT, not in charge but had a hand it it. Can't hurt to ask.

Have you seen Toney's 3rd down defense much?

Toney doesn’t have his players yet, and walked into a really tough spot, specifically at linebacker. Grantham was working with a product last year that he had devised from the ground up, and it was terrible. He also has over a decade of history where he is known for failing on third down. We could revisit this in four or five years and you may be right. But as of now, TG is far worse.

I am not shocked with the rumors. The stench from BBQ sauce to Mullen is still strong. Maybe Billy gets it going after throwing out the crap. But this brings up a bigger issue.

If he is letting coaches go, that's a failure on him. This ain't the Sun Belt, so he needed to bring in coaches who could coach in the SEC immediately. Also brings up the point that UF is always looking for the next upcoming guy (football and basketball) instead of hiring a proven coach and program builder who has done it for years. Time to look at hiring practices as well. I know, we got Mullen from cowbell (that's totally different and was plan c).

Over the weekend my relatives were talking about the game vs FSU and said, Florida isn't very good this year. I responded, they haven't been good for 13 years. We've had a year here and there, but there has been zero consistency and it sucks. (same with basketball - haven't been good in years!). It just pains me that we've sucked for so long.

Bud Foster is 63 and living large in his part of the world. There’s no way he’d come to UF.

I can't blame Billy for getting rid of coaches that aren't getting it done. From what I remember, he had a few lined up that backed out or got better offers. He went with what he had and is now fixing the shortcomings. The problem is that he won't get rid of Toney.

We’re getting Miss State results right now.

As I said in another thread, we are hell bent on trying to find the up and comer instead of hiring proven coaches ()

I suspect the thinking on the previous coach was he was a proven commodity and not an “up and comer.” (The fact he was neither is irrelevant.)

Just a reminder, we went from #31 to #102 so you're factually incorrect on this statement.....as painful as both might have seemed.

It's hard to win anywhere. Up and comers can win and so called proven coaches can fail. I don't get all into the grass being greener. If things are bad, they'll eventually change. Screaming and complaining my fingers off isn't going to change much.

Wow. Didn’t realize we were #31 in total defense last year, but I’ll stand down. We’ve been far from acceptable this season, but it sure felt better than the last few years.

Sometimes it's better to go with who & what you know as opposed to somebody you don't. I really hope he gets this defense sorted out in the Spring. The clock is ticking...Go Gators... :jog:

I felt the same way.....everything last year was ridiculously frustrating. I guess after A&M and Friday with feeling like it was 2007 again (when 11 shopping carts would have stopped something) I didn't realize how good we actually had it statistically.

That was a staple of last year and ‘20 though. Outside of a handful of games in 2018-2019, our defenses under TG were usually terrible to watch, and it seemed like they became worse over time as more of his players became starters. If Toney looks anything like this next year, he should and will be sent packing. My point was that he’s having to play guys like Watson, who’s a great story, but also wouldn’t be starting here if we had recruited better at DT. Same with Dexter’s reps and McClellan’s role as a Fr. The list goes on of players who are great kids but look nothing like what our championship teams fielded, or are being thrown into the fire way too early.

I don't disagree with anything here: I personally do think Grantham is and was worse.

But our 3rd down defense was atrocious this year--and a LOT of that was poor scheme.
