Very sad and frightening for those guys to witness it on the field. Watched most of the coverage right after the initial phases.

Nothing looked out of the way with the hit. I have been a medic for over 37 years and a cardiac event sometimes can offer no explanation and there is so many possibilities. The hit did not look to cause any type of neuro/spinal problem. Could be genetic, clot that moved to an occlusion and the hit manifested it, who knows. Either way a lethal rhythm and thank God they had personnel and equipment there. With CPR and the advanced care they gave him when not breathing hopefully they gave him the airway tube on the field. Couldn't see. But with the time they spent there without transporting may explain that...shocking, airway, IV's, meds. But the tube and induced unconsciousness is good for him, helps him rest, and body to remain calm.

Hope only the best and prayers for this young man and both teams.

In the chat box confirmed what I thought. That helmet hit him in just the right spot, just hard enough. Freak accident

Arrhythmia from blunt impact, otherwise known as commotio cordis. The victim goes into sudden ventricular fibrillation.

Yeah looking at the replay it looks like the helmet hit him right near his heart. It was a normal speed football hit, but in the NFL that's pretty fast. When he got up he looked like a puppet whose strings got cut.

Thank goodness they had defibrillators. Scary as hell but the best conversion result for defibrillation is shock asap after the V-fib initiates.

It's not so much the severity of the hit as it is the placement and timing. It has to be just above the heart and at a certain point in the heart rhythm. The perfect storm.

Chris Pronger 1998 blocking a slap shot... same thing.

KJ situation was exactly what I thought watching this happen, but Hamlin situation was way worse. I'm glad they decided to not play, but should have made the call much sooner. Makes me think about how the heck did the Gator Basketball team even play after watching KJ fall over.

Ryan Clark had an amazing take. He went through a scary situation while playing with sickle cell, so his take is

Hope Hamlin recovers. Reading about him sounds like he's an amazing person.

My thought the moment I saw the replay. Didnt even need to see it again. I cringed when I saw that helmet hit where it did, and then the immediate reaction when he stood up.

The aorta is another blunt force vulnerability. Once that thing tears, you've got but a few seconds before you bleed out. It's what killed Grant Wahl. His went from a slight tear to a full tear over time. Blunt force. He was a walking time bomb.

Why the rush to cancel the game? Cancelling the game when the ambulance left the field does what?

Why not wait, lets the dust settle, gather some info, and then if necessary, cancel the game, which I think was eventually the right call, but doing so immediately does nothing and is knee jerk.

I feel like seeing one of your teammates basically look like they died on the field is a good cause to suspend the game. Did they cancel it? I think it will be made up?

Did Damar Hamlin suffer freak 'one-in-200 million' injury that shuts off blood to brain? Heart may have been struck during 20millisecond window when it is most vulnerable, doctors say

  • Doctors believe the player's chest was struck at a critical point in his heart beat
  • This disrupted blood flow around his body and shut off his brain, they suggested
  • Hamlin is in a critical condition in hospital, his rep has said this morning
  • But his vitals are 'back to normal' after he was rushed to hospital last night
