Scenario: You fly into a medium or large sized city on a business trip or with your family.
How do you get around the city?

Rent a car
Train/subway
Bus
Uber

I'm not a fan of public transit and have always felt they're just a tragedy waiting to happen. So I would either rent a car or Uber.

I almost never leave Tampa, so it's not an issue for me. But I do Uber around here sometimes, just because I don't feel like driving.

Car. I have never lived somewhere that had reliable public transportation that didn't force you to go places you didn't want to go.

Depends on the city. In DC, I've always used Metro. I grew up with it and find it to be pretty safe - plus for the tourist things, it pretty much goes wherever you'd want it to other than Georgetown. If I was visiting Atlanta from somewhere else, I rent a car or Uber; or better still visit somewhere else. NYC - if limiting myself to Manhattan - I'd hoof it or taxi/Uber.

Depends on the city and where I’m going with in it. I’d take the subway in NY going anywhere south of the village. But would walk/cab the rest. And wouldn’t take a train from the airport. That would strictly be a car service. When skiing I rent a car from the airport but then walk or bus around town. But would never get on a bus or the TriRail in WP or their equivalents in Atlanta(for instance). Too many variables to answer this accurately.

Is this a "favorite movie" thread in disguise? :stickpoke:

FWIW, if I'm traveling for work, I rent a car to navigate the city as long as it isn't New York. There I would probably take the subway or a taxi/uber or just walk. I actually went to NY back around 2004 and took a taxi from JFK to my hotel which was a Hilton right beside Ground Zero. Once there we walked everywhere until time to leave for home and then took another taxi back to JFK

For DC last week, I flew into DCA and rented a car because for first two days, I needed to be able to hit a bunch of places like Herndon, Fairfax, Tysons Corner, and Hanover, MD. Dumped the car back at the airport Tuesday night and took Blue Line Metro back to King Street (hotel basically 2 blocks down King Street). Metro and Uber for everything else in DC and Blue Line straight to airport to leave. I do similar wherever I go. Overseas is different, especially depending on the situation, but I pretty much use public transportation, taxi, and in last few years, a LOT of Uber... Uber is stupid cheap in a lot of countries.

We don't like being captive to public transportation but it makes sense in some cities to not have to park a car. Uber has become very convenient to rely on plus you can ask a local a lot of questions.

We went to DC a few years ago and relied on the metro for everything which was stressful with two young kids. Everything about it was out of our comfort zone but it was an adventure. We didn't pack light either because we had a black tie event and were there several days so in hindsight the Metro wasn't the best idea with luggage.

In smaller cities, like Savannah, I've done the tourist buses with the kids that let you on and off at stops.

We are planning on going back to Schuyler, VA again this October. During this trip we are going to head up to DC for a day. We will be driving but IMO that isn't a horrible proposition since it will be just for one day. The main point to observe in DC is, if you park your car in the garage at Arlington National Cemetery, make sure you are there to get it out of the garage BEFORE they close for the day. Otherwise your parking fee continues to add up all night long... jreed can confirm.

After riding on MARTA a few times, rent a car is definitely the way we’d go.

Now that my kids have seen the Aquarium(and what a vandalized, half burned down CNN building looks like), and considering we aren’t very good at football, I can’t envision a reason I’d ever go there again.

Depends on the city and what's going on. Have flown into Chicago a lot and done everything from renting a car, using the L, to hoping a train ride (not public) out of town headed south. Nashville, Cracklanta, Detroit, Charlotte, DC are mostly done with a car/truck rental.

Last trip to DC rented a suv, upon getting to the rental area at Reagan I learned our SUV was a black Suburban. It's fun to ride around some areas of DC in a black mothership.
