AR didn’t play his senior year of high school due to injury. He then redshirted and didn’t play as a true freshman. He then played only a handful of snaps his redshirt freshman year. He played as a redshirt sophomore last year.

He turned 20 six days ago.

He just hasn’t had the experience. Add in the fact that he greatly improved the last half of the season even though receiver play was terrible all season (except Pearsall), and he had none of the top five starting receivers against FSU.

I wish we would’ve had him another year. But he obviously made the right choice since he was drafted #4.

If it was the olden days where a rookie QB had to sit for a year or two behind the starter, I'd give AR a much better chance for success. Even Mahomes didn't play until the last game of his rookie season.

If the Colts are going to throw him out there Week 1, they will destroy his confidence, possible permanently.

My other concern is that he's not a willing runner, despite his amazing speed. Both Cam Newton and Lamar Jackson made up for a lot of their early throwing problems by torching defenses on the ground, which helped open the passing game back up. AR never seemed to like running (I don't think he likes to get hit) and only viewed it as a necessary evil from time to time. I think that's going to be an issue. His speed is meaningless if he doesn't use it.

This amounts to a huge gamble for the Colts. They obviously don't want to eff it up. The team wasn't going anywhere this season regardless and it has a pair of journeymen on the depth chart alongside Richardson. I imagine he'll get garbage time snaps as well as designed runs as part of an effort to ease him in.

In the meantime, there will have to be an adjustment to the offense it they're going to try and maximize his potential. He's not a two-step dropback quarterback if you want the most from him.

As J pointed out, Richardson has an almost alarming lack of experience. The potential payoff is big. Take it slow and easy and hope for the best.

I think his willingness to run will be entirely different now. You could literally see from one game to the next that he was being cautioned by those in his camp to showcase his arm more, all for last night. I don’t think the Colts have any plans to make him strictly a pocket passer and I’m sure discussed that with him. At this stage, he can get hurt and he’s still set for life. That wasn’t the case last season.

It's not that simple. Napier runs a complex scheme with lots of motion that places a premium on quarterback discipline. That's not necessarily a good fit for Richardson, who is at his best relying on raw instinct and his athletic ability.

Mullen's offense, on the other hand, rewarded a quarterback who could read and improvise. Richardson flourished. At least he did when he wasn't injured.

I wasn't there and can't vouch for Richardson's effort, but if it was missing my guess is it was over taking the time to really absorb the new offense. If you want to call that thinking about the draft, I suppose you can.
You lost me at “motion”.

I think either you're a willing runner or you aren't, regardless of what you're being told. My impression was that he doesn't like to get hit, he constantly got up slow and was mentally thrown off for the rest of the day, where he showed it on the sideline by crawling up into a ball and ignoring his teammates. He also has ongoing hamstring issues. I doubt giving him untold millions is now going to motivate him.

I remember how the 49ers always told Steve Young not to run. He couldn't stop, he loved to run, and he knew it gave him an advantage. AR doesn't have that mindset, at all.

Personally, I think NFL defenses are going to eat him alive. The Colts are going to be covering their eyes a lot every time he drops back. 2026 (or possibly even 2025) is when the head coach gets fired and the GM shortly behind him. AR is going to leave a lot of executive careers trampled in his erratic wake. Wouldn't surprise me if this impending disaster even leads to the sale of the team.....at a greatly reduced rate.

My exact thoughts.

I thought that behavior was more often the result of him getting down on himself after making a mistake rather than being hit.

I never thought of his mental issues as an inability to understand things or think quickly, but more as not being mentally tough enough to shrug off the last play. It will be interesting to see if he is able to respond better with a QB coach available to talk to him on the sideline.

Seriously? No idea how you guys can possibly think AR is going to suddenly be Michael Vick against NFL defenders. I also don't think the Colts coaches are going to be pushing for him to run like crazy anyway - he's injury prone on top of everything else.

They’ll probably just shut down the NFL at that point…

I can’t stand that asshat. How a punter and wannabe WWF guy became so popular is beyond me.
I can't stand him off his show when he's on TV, but I've watched his show a zillion times when visiting Son #1 and it's entertaining and more intelligent than just about every other option out there.
