Reservoir Dogs is better than both of those, IMO.

I haven't seen Hateful 8 yet, but Reservior Dogs is the best acted movie in his library. That includes his room in 4 Rooms.

I would say Reservior Dogs would be his best film, with Pulp Fiction being second...

Hateful Eight was good. Not my favorite from Tarantino, but maybe one of the best acted films he's made. Lots of great cinematography, as well. The 70mm version was beautiful. For my money, Pulp Fiction and Inglourious Basterds are still tied at #1 on my Tarantino film list.

Also saw Spotlight a little while back. Fantastic flick, will contend for several Oscars.

The Revenant is up next, been excited for this one for quite some time.
The Revenant is awesome as well. And intense.

Wife and I watched Ted2 last night. It's hard to get movies we can both watch, usually boils down to a comedy of some sort. I recall the original Ted, we didn't know what to expect but quickly found ourselves laughing loud and often. This movie is more of the same, a bit childish with some of the humor, a LOT of foul language (if you have issues with that) but it also had several cameos that were excellently done (I still recall Liam Neeson buying a box of Trix, giving it his intense dialogue at the checkout counter). Even my wife who missed several references (a comparison to, then appearance of, Gollum) still was laughing throughout the film. I'd give it 7/10, for those who know what they are looking to get from it you won't be disappointed.

Of the Tarantino films, there are the good ones, some 'meh', and some that were a waste of time. Most of us seem to be putting Res. Dogs and Pulp Fiction up at the top. For me, Dogs is a great story acted well, good humor sprinkled in. A solid film overall. But I enjoyed PF a lot more. In part because of the all star cast, in part because the three storylines stood well on their own but also weaved together quite well, and none of them seemed to be a rehash of something I'd seen or heard elsewhere (ala 4 rooms where I saw storylines stolen from elsewhere). Seriously, I liked both a lot, but if I had to pick ONE to watch again, it would be hands down Pulp Fiction.

I'm sorry I ever wasted time on the Grindhouse series of crap. Utter crap, and that's coming from a guy who regularly watches B movies in hopes of finding something enjoyable.

I really liked the Kill Bill series although neither are nowhere near as good as RD or PF.

From Dusk Til Dawn came out in my early 20s and is a fun movie.

Django Unchained was a fun movie as well.

Dusk Til Dawn is Robert Rodriquez.. Tarantino did the Screen Play... like Natural Born Killers.

Django was a ton of fun.

Good weekend. Wife took the kids to her mom's for teh weekend, so I was a bachelor again. Time to hit the theaters:

The Revenant

I wasn't sure what to expect, other than noting the 2.5 hr runtime. The story was ok, as was the cinematography and dialogue. But here's my major takeaway - it could have been real. I was 1.5-2 hrs into it when I realized I had forgotten I was in a movie theater. The imagery was breathtakingly frontier and plot seemed plausible. The only doubts I had were a) is the lead (Leonardo) really capable of coming back through such injuries, the weather, etc; and b ) do we have accurate tribes (were Pawnee up there, were the Arikara that driven and are they a real tribe?). My doubts were negligible. I was impressed with the way I fell into the movie and found it as believable as if I were recalling memories. That impressed me more than anything. Though, I'll have to give a nod to the effort for location, wardrobe, and setting as they were all very well done to build that effect.

Then....I sneaked across the hall to watch Hateful 8, making my own 2-for-1 movie evening. That was a mistake.

Hateful 8

From the opening credits and over the top music, you knew it was a Tarantino film. My mistake was coming straight from Revenant into this film, because H8 was definitely a movie experience and my mind was still adjusting from the full immersion effect of Revenant. Had I not seen Revenant first, I probably would have liked it more, but you knew it was Tarantino every moment of the way. It reminded me a lot of Reservoir Dogs in that there were a few outside shots to set things up, then everything else was dialogue and action in a confined setting for the remainder of the film. My Revenant reality had me groan everytime the dialogue included modern swear words (Fk, Btch, etc) which was A LOT, because they constantly reminded me this was pretend, this was for entertainment not truism. Like I said, I came in with the wrong mindset. However, I'll get to the point for anyone interested - it will probably stand well on it's own as a Tarantino film with a really good cast (Jennifer Jason Leigh playerd her part exceptionally well, IMO, whereas Samuel L was exactly as you'd expect him to be). It also echoed R. Dogs in that all the scenes revolved around figuring out who was who, and what angle each one was playing - to include narrative oversight by Quinten where needed, a flashback 75% thru the movie to help explain what happened earlier, and the last act solely focused on dialogue driving to the conclusion and a not-to-surprising Tarantino ending if you look at who died. A good film, but not one of his best, IMO, but that opinion may change if I can watch it again with the right mindset. EDIT - I did notice the homage to John Carpenter's "The Thing" in the early part of the movie and was delighted to see there were musical samplings taken directly from "The Thing" (presumably played at that time of H8) which confirmed the connection. Delightful.

I too hit the theater this weekend. Saw 13 Hours, The Secret Soldiers Of Bengazi. As I always do when I watch a movie like this I left the theater thinking how proud I am to be an American. It was kick a$$, exhilarating, heartbreaking, inspiring all wrapped up into one neat little package. What's cool and sad at the same time is that it is a true story.
If you like this sort of film then you should definitely go see it.

The Big Short - I thought it was very well written with lots of dark humor, and great performances all around. Very dialogue heavy with lots of technical banking terms, which they try to help you understand throughout the film. However, I was still scratching my head in a few places. Regardless, great film about an absolutely mindblowingly despicable moment in our economy's history. SQ didn't like the film as much as I did.

Sicario - Some great action scenes mixed in with tedious dialogue. So so performances. SQ liked the film a lot more than I did. I almost fell asleep multiple times during this one.

I'm going to try to get to all the Best Picture noms before the Oscars. Only ones I'm missing are Room, Bridge of Spies, and Brooklyn. Only one of those I'm excited about is Room.

Ant-Man - I remember nothing about it but I seem to recall I enjoyed it.

Ex Machina - Loved it. I watched it three times. Joe Bob says check it out.

Soaked in Bleach - A documentary of sorts from the point of view of the P.I. that Courtney Love hired to find Kurt Cobain a few days before his "suicide". Although this guy was hired by Love, from the very beginning he thought her story was suspicious and he thinks she had Cobain killed because he was about to divorce her. He presents a good case.

Moon - If your looking for a good sci-fi film that you might have missed Joe Bob says check this out. Sam Rockwell plays an astronaut about to finish his three year solo mission on the moon. Rockwell is fantastic in this movie. I can't say too much about it without giving away the plot but this is one of my favorite sci-fi movies.

The Martian - If you love movies about potato growing, and who doesn't, check out The Martian.

I need to see Big Short again with no alcohol in my system so I can focus 100%. It's definitely a lot of information to take in, and I worked at a bank for 4 years. I just really started to lose interest half way through when the wine fully kicked in. Then I just needed my bed.

I liked Sicario, watched it last weekend.

We watched Sisters this past week, pretty damn funny. Surprisingly so, since I didn't expect much from it.

^this movie
Rockwell is fantastic in just about anything ("Galaxy Quest' as expendable crewman #6, Guy Fleegman and 'The Green Mile' especially) and this one (Moon) had me scratching my head ...until near the end and I'm like ...'damn, did not see that coming'. Great story
