Saw "The Revenant" the other day. Pretty good but a little long. I guess it's based on a true story. I plan on researching it a little to find out what really happened to the real Hugh Glass.

I can tell you one thing though, I really wanted to take a shower when I got home.

My favorite thing about the Revenant was watching people repeatedly and seemingly without hesitation just walk through or otherwise plunge themselves into freezing cold water. All in the middle of nowhere, and afterward no urgency whatsoever to light a life saving fire.

Yeah the lack of hypothermia was a bit unbelievable. The crazy thing is, the actors plunged unflinchingly into that water multiple times. Obviously they had measures to combat the hypothermia when the camera stopped rolling, but damn, they went all out. Leo even ate an actual raw bison liver for the scene in which he's depicted doing so. F*cking gross. If I was an Oscar voter, I'd just vote for him for that scene alone.

I saw the Revenant on Friday evening. Tom Hardy plays a very good bastard. I believe he'll win best supporting actor for this one. The scene where Dicaprio goes
off the cliff/ mountain on horseback and somehow survives was a bit astonishing. He did a good job with this character. The scene where he coughs and singes his wound with fire was also good.

Hail, Caesar! - for the love of all that's good, and yourself, do not see this movie, ever. Don't even rent it. Heii, don't watch it if it costs you nothing. You will never get the lost time back. Sleep instead, it's a much better use of your time.

There were all of 4 people in the showing that I was in and I saw it in the Metro ATL area. I didn't think it was going to be great, but I had no idea it was going to be as bad as it was with all of those A-listers either. It was a last option choice as we wouldn't have been able to make the times for the other options.

Did anyone see Deadpool? I'll probably wait for redbox on this one.

I haven't. But I heard it was fantastic. Much more adult than your normal comic movie.

Watch the red band trailer. It's NSFW.

The last movie I saw in theaters was In the Heart of the Sea. Really good survival movie about the inspiration for Moby Dick.

Watched Fast and Furious 7 on HBO on Friday night. the dialog in that movie was brutal...just painful on the ears. Decent stunts, but a bad movie overall.

Saturday night was date night for me and the wife (first since...December?) and she picked the movie:

Race (2016)

The story is about Jesse Owens, and it was very well done. We know the high level view of him being black and winning gold in Berlin at what was to be a showcase for the Aryan race. But the film did an honest job at going deeper than that with his story - frequently showing the issues of segregation at home with which he was dealing, the pressures put on him from all corners both for college and for the Olympics, and a decent amount of insight into his personal issues. Definitely recommend it, 7/10.

And Sunday was family movie night, and the kids had recently watched Hotel Transylvania (2012) <Very good family film, I'd give it 7/10> and wanted to see the sequel:

Hotel Transylvania 2 (2015)

For those who saw the original, this is a solid followup. The whole family (me, wife, daughter age 9, son age 7) loved the first one and each found ourselves laughing at certain points. This film took the characters into the next phase of their lives and built upon the first film - you could watch this on it's own, but I really recommend seeing the other one first to better know the characters and relationships. I seriously laughed out loud at a few spots. This series isn't another cute throwaway like so many kids animated films, it had chops in the writing of the scenes, dialogue, and action (as much as can be gotten from a kids/family film). This isn't necessarily award worthy beyond family films, but it would be a good family movie night selection for anyone, and even a decent date-night movie for most couples. 8/10.

Saw Ex Machina recently. I really liked it. One of those that you probably only want to watch once because it moves a little slow, but while you're watching it the first time it kind of grips you. Some decent nudity if you stick it out until the end.

How do they keep making movies? Were the first 6 not bad enough?

They keep making money, the 7th one broke all kinds of box office records for the month it was released, and an 8th is on the way. If it wasn't on HBO I wouldn't have seen it.
