I'm going to be doing a pretty big renovation on my master bathroom shortly, so I figured I'd start a thread for those people that are interested in this kind of thing. Scope:
  • New vanity, granite top and fixtures
  • New flooring
  • New shower tile all the way to the ceiling, and new fixtures
  • New light fixtures
  • New paint
The current materials are cheap-ass stuff. The floor tile is garbage. The tile in the shower has been leaking for a while now, both into the bathroom and into the garage behind it. We figure we can get every penny spent on this renovation back when we sell the house.

Materials have been selected and demo starts in the next week or two. I'll get some pictures up of the current arrangement shortly.

Are you using a contractor or doing it yourself? We've done 2 of our bathrooms in the last year and used the same contractor for both .The first one ended up taking almost 4 months for them to complete and although it is beautiful when finished they have had to come back out a half dozen times to correct issues with the tub and tile. The second one is our second master bathroom and went a little better but still ended up taking almost 2 months. Only had a few minor touch up issues on that one.
The biggest problem with using a large contractor is that they in turn use a lot of sub contractors and between them trying to coordinate everything between parties and the inspections. We actually had sometimes a week where no one was working on anything.....The second time they only used 3 different people, one guy did the demo and rebuilt the shower, did all the tile, re textured the walls, painted and installed the vanity and cabinets. The plumber and electricians of course did their things.
If you're going that route just remember to be a little patient. One nice touch you may want to consider is a rain shower head for the shower and they make fart fans now that will play music from you Ipod....I love that thing...

I hate rain showers. The water is constantly pouring on your head. We have 3 shower heads. 2 coming from opposite directions and one that is mid height. I absolutely love it.

I just completed a total remodel in one of the baths upstairs at my girlfriends house. Nice home, built in the mid 60s, old and tired I've already finished painting the outside, inside, remodeled one of the other two baths, and remodeled the kitchen. Since finishing the bath in June, we are now re-carpeting and I just finished redoing the stairs. The bath originally had tile floors, tile shower, toilet, and wall hung lavatory that had not been in use for years. All three fixtures leaked and had previously caused damage to a bathroom ceiling on the 1st floor. The bathroom served what was originally the master bedroom and had a dressing room in the center and a walk-in closet on the other side of the dressing room, all three rooms were about 6'x7' each.

I decided to incorporate the dressing room into the bathroom and add a whirlpool tub in this area. Demo included all fixtures, tile, drywall, shower and removed the wall that separated the bath from the dressing room and relocated the door to the new bath and the door to the walk in closet. As part of the new design, I moved the old lavatory drain, water supply, light fixture, and relocated them to the adjacent wall across fron the shower with a new gfci outlet and all switches relocated into a 3 gang box. I also added a gfci outlet next to the new toilet for a future hot water bidet seat. I added a ceiling mounted bath fan above the toilet which is the new smoothside American Standard that will flush a bag of golf balls quite nicely. To accomodate the whirlpool tub, I cut out the cast iron quarterbend that connected the shower trap to the drain and added a wye to provide new drainage. Since I had to add two circuits to handle the tub pump motor and auxillary heater, I had to upgrade the service panel located in the garage This is the only work I went outside for in that I have a friend that is a master electrician. He did the 200 amp panel upgrade and the two circuits for $500 including all parts. The circuit run was 65 feet. This would normally be in the range of $1800.

The original shower was a 36"x 36" square tile pan and walls with obscure glass enclosure. I replaced this with a new 1/4 round shower and curved glass walls. I installed 18x18 floor tile and 9x12 tub and shower wall tile and built in a 3 shelf shampoo niche.

Really nice on everything but the toilet. I installed 2 of those jokers recently. They are nice but they aren't ideal to work on. :) It really looks nice.

My wife wanted a new chair height toilet at our country house and I told her that I wasn't getting another one of those smooth sided one. But honey, they look so nice.....she said. NO I said.

footnote: After 46 years of marriage, her pet name for me is no longer Honey.....................and I don't think it's a very nice name. :bwahaha:

Impressive work. One question I have is why is there an outlet installed down by the toilet? Doesn't seem like a really needy location.

Because a person feels a lot more confident when they feel really clean and you never know when you may have to make that unexpected trip to see G2 in the ER. Plus a blast of cold water will cause your butt to pucker. There's a video on the link under the photos.

I probably averaged 4-5 hrs a day 4 days a week for maybe 1 1/2 months. I was also finishing up painting the interior of the house at the time so there was some down time where I was jumping back and forth.

I put those toilets that can flush a bucket of golf balls in my house... they work pretty good.

3 months ago my wife called me and said and I quote, "Ok hunny, I have something to tell you that you aren't going to like, so please don't be mad at me ok?"

I say: "ehhh, what exactly did you do?"

She says: "Well I accidently dropped a large tube of toothpaste into the toilet."

I say: "That's no big deal, just suck it up, reach down into the bowl and get it out."

She says: "Well, that's the part you aren't going to like. I was flushing the toilet when I dropped the tube."

At this point I'm thinking, "What the hell were you doing with a tube of toothpaste while hovering over the toilet anyway?" but I let the thought go for the time being.

I say: "Are you freaking serious? Is the toilet stopped up? Is it overflowing? Did the tube get stuck where you might could reach down there and maybe grab it?"

She says: "I already tried hunny, its gone. The toilet is not overflowing or anything, and it flushed."

I say: "Well hell, don't do anything else, and don't flush it again. I'll come home and see what I can do."

Later I get home, grab the long springy thing that you stick down in there to unclog the drain and go into the bathroom. Toilet looks fine, so I figure I might as well see what happens before starting. I flush it and it flushes normally and refills with no issue. Frankly I was shocked. The thing swallowed a full tube of Colgate without even a hiccup. I lingered for about 15 minutes, then came back into the living room, found my wife. Told her it was a pain in the ass to fix, but I took care of it and to be more careful in the future.

Did you ever revisit this question?
