Using live bait is an experiment I should try out there one of these days.
Bring a second rod if you do that way you can toss your live bait out and keep working your fluke with the other. If you're like me you might have a hard time sitting there waiting. I caught my biggest Bass on a wild shiner many years ago this way. It was the middle of the summer and in the heat of the afternoon. I got bored of fishing next to where my second rod was laying so I opened the bail on the live bait rod which hadn't got any action in the half hour or so I was there, shiner wasn't even moving anymore either, so I started walking around the small lake and casting. After getting about halfway around the small lake I was ready to go so I headed back to get my second rod where I had parked. I had been gone maybe 20 minutes and when I returned the rod was in the same place but all of the line was out from the reel. Back then all I had were small spinning reels which didn't hold a lot of 20# monofilament line. I began reeling the line back in which was completely slack. As I got almost all of the line back in with no tension I thought the bait had come off or something. Right when I had what I thought was all of the line almost back in it came tight about 10 feet from where I was standing next to the water in a clump of weeds. So I reeled down thinking the hook was stuck in the weeds. It was heavy and as I reached down pull the weeds off the line and hook there was a 8 &3/4 lb. Bass that was so exhausted it just laid there barely moving.

It was really kind of a hollow victory as I never really got to fight the fish. Still and sadly like so many other fisherman 30 years ago, off I went to the taxidermist to have the fish mounted. To be honest I never really enjoyed looking at that mount and actually I think it made me feel almost guilty or something.....To this day I regret it and it is part of the reason I rarely keep any fish(freshwater or saltwater inshore unless they're gut hooked). As a side note that small lake went from a Honey Hole to fishing in a dessert within the next few months probably because of my big mouth telling a half dozen or so people about it. So guys if you know of such a small lake or pond my advice is to keep quiet about it.....

Report from last Sunday:

Decided to try some different water in the same area. Went north of the main lake and hit the canal along this field. Boy was I in for a surprise. This wasn't a big canal, maybe 40 feet across or so. I can easily cast to the far edge and work my way down. Looks like this:

Anyway, the fish are biting like crazy. And hard. Nearly every strike on the fluke is a lighting quick bang from a fish coming either from the edge or at the bottom in the middle.

I caught 27 in about an hour or so, but that's only part of the story. These were overall much larger fish than in the main lake. Eight of those 27 were at least 2.5 pounds, with the largest coming in at 4.68. These were big, beautiful bass, that fought like mad. Maybe it has to do with the spawning going on now, but these fish would jump 3 or 4 times in the short distance I had to reel them in. It's like they were on steroids.

Looking forward to heading back in the morning.

Sounds like you had a great time. My old favorite bass hole has been closed to me. The people leasing the property wanted it put in the lease nobody could fish in the pond because he was afraid his cows/bulls would hurt somebody. I tried hitting my cousin's pond a couple times already but only got a few dinks. Everybody's talking about the bass biting great and I can't find any. Did manage to get my first channel cat of the year yesterday though so I'm happy.

Most likely post spawn feeding bonanza. Are you seeing a lot of beds in the canal? For grins and giggles maybe try a few cast with a 10-12" dark green, pumpkin seed or watermelon seed worm in there after you have your fill of numbers...Catch em up....

I want to see more on that bike you have rigged up for fishing. Is that a rod holder behind the seat?
Yes, I love this thing. I bought it partially for my fishing trips, so I no longer have to walk for miles. It folds in half so I can fit in the back seat of my truck. It's an e-bike and has a 250W motor on the rear wheel. I can go 20+ miles on a single charge and not be tired in the least. After my first experiment where I tried holding the two rods while I biked along, I decided to strap a couple of PVC rod holders on the rear shelf, and the results were magic. Here's a picture of this thing before the rod holders:

The second reason was so me and my grandson could take a ride together every night after I get home from work.

He's ready.
