Hint... You don't need to flip the little yellow lever to release the slide if you do it the "glock way"... IE pull trigger on empty chamber. And if you haven't found it yet go to smith-wessonforum.com
Agreed, with the added "BUT MAKE SURE THE WEAPON IS CLEARED FIRST" caveat that shouldn't be needed. The whole idea of that yellow lever is what I would call "lawyer induced" because it makes you actually see into the chamber area to do it.

And what about an upgraded sights
For my old eyes, combination tritium fiberoptic is THE ONLY WAY TO GO. I've had truglo TFOs on two pistols which were beat to hell during various work related ventures. The oldest is seven years old. Seems like it should stop glowing soon, if I remember my science. The fiberoptic will still work regardless.

I thought those things looked so goofy when I first saw them. Then I picked one up on a small Smith revolver and couldn't believe how it made the front sight stand out.

It has been tougher than I expected, and, much to my surprise, even tougher than the Glock finish. The newer TFX has a sharper front part of the rear sight, which enables easier one handed malfunction drills. when I need a replacement set it'll be one of those.

Spoke with my FIL who's friends with a dealer in TN. He's looking to see what his friend has the Shileds priced at for my Father's Day present.

any way... the dealer told him that S&W will likely lower the price in the next few weeks because they are trying to compete with Taurus. He said it may not be limited to a price lowering, it could be a higher rebate, or they throw in some extra free stuff in lieu of lowering the price.

Either way, I'm going to wait a week or two to purchase.
Right now Palmetto State Armory has the Shield 9mm for $289.00, + shipping, before rebate. It's going to be hard to beat that deal.

Think about spending a few bucks more for the ported version.

Mehhh... shoot it first. Porting makes more noise, especially inside or under a covered range, and sometimes flash that really screws you up in low light shooting. I'm not a fan.

On a serious note though, here is my problem with a ported Shield (or ANY short barreled pistol):
  1. Shorter barrel = less velocity
  2. Ported, shorter barrel = even less velocity than unported, short barrell.
  3. I'm guessing a ported Shield gets the same velocity as a 2 to 2.5" non-ported barrel length.
  4. Everything Law said.
  5. I also THINK (just my opinion) that most infrequent shooters, especially in a stress situation, are more likely to have FTF's with this when taken in total with other factors.

bought a Shield 9 last night, the one w/o the safety. after holding it, the safety was in an odd position any way. I know that you can leave it off all the time, but isn't that the same as one w/o a safety?

Not concerned with a ported barrel - here's why. since I purchased it as a carry weapon, I hope that the only time I shoot it is at the range (non-competitively). if I want to get into competitions, I doubt this would be my weapon of choice.

Here's the run-down on the purchase:
some of you may have heard that Gander Mountain is going out of business - :suspect: - to my knowledge I have nothing to do with this, but @bradgator2 & his hamster might, @LagoonGator68 should look into that angle.

they are now at 30% off on new firearms and they had at least 4 in stock - 30% off price = $314.99
the best price I could find online for anyone with them in stock was $289.99 + $17 shipping - palmettostatearmory.com
The absolute best price/deal I could find online was @ gunbuyer.com - $299 with 2 additional 8 round magazines [ no stock :( ]

If I purchased online I would have to pay a FFL a $25 transfer fee bringing the palmetto state armory route total to $331.99
with tax at the Gander Mtn it was $343 and some change, no transfer fee. To me the $11 difference was worth having the gun in my hand now.

All of this is before the $75 Rebate, which has already been submitted (8-12 weeks)

now it's time to pick out a holster :)

Nice! I was going to mention Gander Mountain to people as well. We have one here in P'cola and literally everything is 15-40% off everything.

I have a remora sticky holster for my shield 40. Does the job but not having a way to physically clip to anything a belt (or drawstring) helps quite a bit. If you go this route I highly recommend getting one with the full sweat shield, Side benefit is with full shield there's more "sticky" area.

edit: Works well as a pocket holster

Bass Pro has 100 rounds Remington UMC 124gr FMJ's @ $13.99. I have no idea the quality, but they are brass casings.

Seems like good range ammo, but :dunno: - anyone have any input on them?

EDIT: I looked at the box wrong, it's only a 50 round quantity

don't seem like such a good deal now.

I use UMC at times for range ammo, Being FMJ they're not the best for defense situations but will definitely still put a hole in someone.
Wally world has winchester fmj's for good prices too.
I try to avoid the steel cased ammo, just a personal preference

I picked up a 100 round pack of the Winchester 115 gr. FMJ at Wal-Mart for range practice. 19 cents/round is the best I've found local.

now it's time to purchase a conceal holster. My FIL has a Crossbreed Super Tuck that he loves. It's made from horse and Kydex.

since they're not local I'll have to guess at it on my first go. They have multiple styles of IWB holsters and I'm thinking trial & error will be my new friend for the process.

they have two websites. their new/custom holsters are sold at crossbreedholsters.com
they also have a liquidation site where they sale scuffed, restored, and/or returned holsters. it's @ www.crossbreedseconds.com
