Watched Red River this morning... forgot how much I liked it.

Also, a modern one that gets overlooked that I love is Open Range.

Any good gladiator movie recommendations?
Wrong thread. Probably need to ask either L-boy or Peter Graves. ;)

Open Range...another great one! Duval and Costner made a great team. Boss "Blue Bonnet" Spearman and Charlie Postlewait. Great scene when Charlie walks up to the gun hand that killed Mose and said he enjoyed it, drew his pistol and shot him in the forehead! Good cinema gun battle ensued. Annette Benning had a good part, also. I also, liked that Boss sold his cattle and bought a saloon. A dream of mine!

I just loved how plain spoken and simple they all were in Open Range... they all played their roles perfectly.

Red River is another one of those movies my Dad made me watch with him... I'm glad he did.

Silverado was a decent western, too. Not nearly as good as Tombstone, but not too bad for modern times.

"The Searchers" is the best Western I've ever seen. Just completely epic in story and cinematography. It really was Ford and Wayne at their very best.

One of my fondest memories as a boy was watching The Sons of Katie Elder with my parents right after my grandmother died. Still one of my favorites.

This one often gets looked over by the younger set, but you are right on all counts. Cinematography was absolutely spectacular, particularly for the time period.

Here's a lesser known western for you all...Hombre, starring Paul Newman. Pretty good film and cast that included Richard Boone as the heavy. Hard not to like most anything Paul Newman was in!

Funny to me, but Newman played a "half breed" in this one; today, several advocacy groups would go wild over that characterization instead of him being described as "multi-racial!"

1. Rio Bravo
2. Unforgiven
3. Fistful Of Dollars

I don't classify Blazing Saddles as a Western, but if I did, it would be #1.

I think Paladin was known as the ugliest actor in Hollywood. Shane, True Grit, High-noon, anything with The Duke especially if Maureen O'Hara was with him, Steve McQueen, Eastwood's spaghetti westerns, Chuck Conerly's show, Matt Dillon and Miss Kitty was can't miss TV....good times.

Favorite of all time was Butch Cassidy and Sundance Kid, probably because of that woman....lol. Not quite a western, The Sting is a close second.

Absolutely, Goon. Every one you mentioned was what I watched religiously. An interesting note...Chuck Connors of The Rifleman fame was a pro baseball player in the Dodgers organization before he took up acting. He had a few big screen parts (e.g. Disney's Ol' Yeller), but was primarily known for his role as Lucas McCain. There was also a rumor that he had done some early work in gay porn. In fact, an old high school buddy had a Hustler magazine with some still shots of supposedly Connors and another guy "in action!" I can only hope it was some sort of early photoshopping, but that was hurtful! I still can't watch a Rifleman rerun without thinking about that!

As for the woman in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, Katherine Ross was, indeed, a looker. I believe she's married to Sam Elliot. First thing I ever saw her in was a Robert Redford movie called Tell Them Willie Boy is Here, where she played an Indian girl in love with an outlaw brave played by Robert Blake. Anything Newman and Redford were in was money and like you, The Sting remains a favorite to this day.

Shane was an awesome movie.

On a related note, my kids used to love to watch "Shakiest Gun in the West." :lmao2:

Shane was great! Unfortunately, I don't remember a lot that Alan Ladd did beyond Shane. Jack Palance was a great villain.

Don Knotts was pretty funny in Shakiest Gun. He left Andy Griffith when he thought Andy was going to end the series and signed a movie contract with Disney. Then Andy decided to carry on with the series and Knotts was locked in to the movie deal and could only make four guest appearances from then on. The Andy Griffith Show wasn't the same after that.

Andy Griffith in color.

MASH with BJ Hunnicut.

The automatic signal to change the channel.
No kidding! The Warren character that replaced Barney was just awful. I never got too deep into M*A*S*H (not a fan of Alan Alda), but Wayne Rogers was definitely a much better character as Trapper John.

I'm by far more of an Eastwood Fan over the Duke:
1. The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly
2. Outlaw Josey Wales
3. FistFul of Dollars
4. Unforgiven (same story as Josey Wales just takes longer to get angry)
5. A Few Dollars More
6. Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid
7.Tombstone
8. Once Upon A Time In The West
9. The Magnificent Seven (1960)
10. True Grit (1969)

Honorable Mentions: True Grit (2010), Open Range, Django Unchained, The Searchers, Silverado, Appaloosa, Jeremaih Johnson

Dishonorable Mention: Wild Wild West (1999)

I won't hold that against you. Got some good ones. Who doesn't like Josey Wales? "Buzzard's gotta eat, same as the worm!" I always liked the Magnificent Seven. Not necessarily a Yul Brenner fan, but Charles Bronson and his movies were among those that I enjoyed.

Hated Wild Wild West as well. But then I wasn't really crazy about the series with Robert Conrad. Kinda like they tried to breed sci-fi with a western.
