I disagree regarding the difficulty of recruiting at Miss St.

1. There aren't a ton of top talent guys in Mississippi
2. Ole Miss is definitely a factor
3. LSU, Georgia, Auburn and Alabama all would go after any top talent in Mississippi

Exactly. Anyone acting like recruiting to Miss State (or Ole Miss) is easy....or not hard - is nuts. Who the F wants to go to Starkeville, MS or Oxford, MS for 4 years? Other than a kid who is hell-bent on staying close to home I don't think there's many (that's why the enrollments at those schools has stagnated over the years).

Pulling in an 18th ranked class there (twice) is a hell of an accomplishment. He already topped that by 4 spots at UF w/ only weeks to recruit.

The kids who signed early w/ Moorehead were mostly already committed. Moorehead did a good job...he's a very good coach.

How many 4-star kids come out of Mississippi each year? Probably around 20. How many of those are going to Alabama, LSU, Tennessee, etc? I imagine less than half of the 4-star kids from the state go to a state school. If Miss State or Ole Miss ever sign more than 10 4-stars in one class it's time for the NCAA to pay a visit.

I agree w/ you on Mullen's limitations...but one thing I won't agree w/ you on is his recruiting at that sh*t-hole in Starkeville called Mississippi State University football.

Itraz, I love your insights on a lot of things, especially Mullen's shortcomings....but I told you, I'm not going to argue Mullen's recruiting at MSU. That's one area you can't disparage....

You think the Rebel Bears probation had anything to do with Cowbell's great class?

Florida recruiting: CB Kaiir Elam a priority target for Gators in 2019 class

https://www.seccountry.com/florida/florida-recruiting-kaiir-elam-priority

I would go with 4-star cornerback Kaiir Elam, given the importance of his position in Florida’s 2019 class.

The Gators will try to sign multiple corners and have offered more than 20, but Elam appears to be their best shot at an elite player at the position. He is the highest-ranked uncommitted cornerback in the Sunshine State with an offer from Florida.

The previous staff offered Elam last spring at the Orange & Blue Debut and he returned to The Swamp for the Tennessee game on Sept. 16. Elam has been offered by new Florida coach Dan Mullen and will be a top priority.

The opportunity for early playing time and proximity to home will be selling points for the Gators, along with his family ties to the program. He is the nephew of former Florida safety Matt Elam, which should help Mullen’s cause.

The 6-foot-2, 180-pound prospect is ranked the nation’s No. 14 cornerback in the 247Sports composite and holds more than 30 scholarship offers. Alabama, Florida, Florida State, Miami and Ohio State are considered the top contenders for Elam, who was named DB MVP at the Rivals camp in Miami on Sunday.

Cornerback is one of the biggest needs for Florida in the 2019 recruiting cycle. The Gators are low on numbers at the position, although it’s probable that two or three returning safeties could play cornerback under the new defensive staff and scheme.

McArthur Burnett, C.J. Henderson, C.J. McWilliams and Marco Wilson are the returning corners from 2017. Early enrollee Trey Dean, an Under Armour All-American, also is expected to play the position despite being rated as a safety prospect by recruiting services.

Shawn Davis, Brian Edwards, Chauncey Gardner and Brad Stewart all played safety last season, but some of them could make the move to cornerback or nickel this year to help the Gators with their depth in the secondary.

This kid is a 2020 commit...but there's no 2020 recruiting thread. He's transferring to IMG (from Clay HS):

5 key in-state recruiting battles UF must win
Florida's key in-state recruiting battles during the 2019 cycle.

https://florida.247sports.com/Artic...-5-key-in-state-battles-UF-must-win-115157729

The state of Florida is one of the nation’s hottest recruiting beds. Taking care of the Sunshine State on the recruiting trail is a big priority for Florida head coach Dan Mullen and his staff. 247Sports looks at five key in-state recruitments the Gators need to win in 2019.

CB Kaiir Elam

The North Palm Beach (Fla.) Benjamin School cornerback is the nephew of former Florida All-American safety Matt Elam. The 6-foot-1, 180-pound Elam also ranks high on Florida’s cornerback board, which is a very important position for the Gators to fill in 2019. Miami, Ohio State, Auburn and others are after Elam as well.

OG Deyavie Hammond

The former Alabama commit is a Lakeland, Fla. native, an area of the state that has been friendly to Florida in the past. Now at Bradenton (Fla.) IMG Academy, the 6-foot-4, 320-pound prospect has many of the nation’s best programs chasing for his commitment. Florida needs to sign five offensive linemen in the 2019 cycle, and Hammond is one of the most important targets at the position.

WR Jeremiah Payton

This Neptune Beach (Fla.) Fletcher standout is considered one of the nation’s best wide receivers in the 2019 class. Miami has recruited Payton harder than anyone at this point, but Alabama, Auburn, Florida and others are trying to get in the mix. This high four-star recruit from just up the road from Gainesville is a priority recruit for the Gators.

DT Derick Hunter

The former Miami commit looked to be on the verge of committing to Florida last summer. Now uncommitted, the Ft. Myers (Fla.) Dunbar product remains high on the Gators. The 6-foot-4, 280-pound prospect has several earlier suitors including Florida State, Tennessee, Maryland, and others.

OLB/DE Lloyd Summerall

Auburndale (Fla.) defensive end Lloyd Summerall looks to be one of the nation’s most electric edge rushers in the 2019 class. The 6-foot-5, 215-pound Summerall is lightning quick and looks to be a perfect fit for the Gators new 3-4 scheme. Alabama, Florida State, South Carolina and others are making Summerall a priority early.

Any way we can get Drake to do this next time in Gator gear instead of Miami gear?

Love hearing this kind of stuff!

https://florida.247sports.com/Artic...ardrick-Wilson-updates-recruitment--115265069

MIAMI, Fla. – When Miami (Fla.) Doral Academy four-star offensive tackle Wardrick Wilson committed to the in-state Florida Gators last year, it was to the former coaching staff in Gainesville.

Since then, there has been a complete change to the coaching staff with new head coach Dan Mullen coming to town. After getting settled, it didn’t take long for the new Gators staff to start building their bond.

“There are some new coaches there but talking with them has been great and they have been talking with me a lot,” Wilson told 247Sports. “Coach Mullen has been talking to me a lot, so it’s been going good.”

With only a few months on the job, Coach Mullen knows he is playing catch up with the 2019 recruiting cycle, but is working hard to get to know his 2019 verbal commitment in a short period.

“He just wants to get to know me more and just telling me welcome to the family and that is pretty much it.”

Despite the total change to the staff, the 6-foot-4, 295-pounder maintains his commitment to the Gators is very solid.

“That is home,” Wilson said of Florida. “When I first walked on campus it felt like home and I felt like I belonged there. I like everything about Florida from the last coaching staff to this staff they are showing me even more love. It’s just great to be a Gator.”

However, that hasn’t stopped others from recruiting the South Florida native.

“Tennessee, Miami, and Missouri,” Wilson said of other programs he hears from. “I am not really focused on other schools right now, I am just focusing on Florida. I want to try and get back up for a visit this summer.”

247Sports currently ranks Wilson as the Nation’s No. 247 overall prospect in the 2019 recruiting class.

Agree but I’ll add that Oxford is much more attractive than Starkville. Ole Miss is a better school, its proximity to Memphis is better than Starkville’s proximity to nothing. MSU does have an edge on Southern Miss but not by much.

MSU is the least attractive location and lowest rated school in the SEC and it isn’t close.

Biggest needs in Gators’ 2019 class

https://www.seccountry.com/florida/florida-recruiting-biggest-needs-gators-2019-class

he line of scrimmage will be a point of emphasis for Florida coach Dan Mullen in the 2019 recruiting cycle.

The Gators currently have 14 spots available for next year’s class and can sign a maximum of 29 recruits, though their class size should be closer to 24-27 signees after attrition (read more).

Here are Florida’s biggest needs in the 2019 class:

Offensive line
The Gators could lose a half dozen offensive linemen after next season. Kavaris Harkless, Martez Ivey, Fred Johnson, Tyler Jordan and Andrew Mike are all seniors in 2018, and junior tackle Jawaan Taylor could potentially turn pro.

If there’s no additional attrition, Florida will return 10 players at the position in 2019. Mullen likes to have 16 offensive linemen on his roster, so he and his staff will try to sign five or six recruits in the upcoming class — depending on Taylor.

Wardrick Wilson, a 3-star tackle from Miami, is currently committed to the Gators. Some of their top targets at the position are 5-star tackle Kenyon Green, 4-star tackles William Putnam, Wayna Morris and Trente Jones and 4-star guards Deyavie Hammond, Dontae Lucas and Evan Neal.

Defensive line
Senior starters Khairi Clark and CeCe Jefferson will be gone after the 2018 season. Junior defensive ends Jachai Polite and Jabari Zuniga could both make an early jump to the NFL, while DE Keivonnis Davis is still recovering from a moped accident and faces an uncertain future.

With those possible losses, Florida needs at least three edge rushers in the 2019 class. Look for the Gators to sign a pair of interior linemen as well, with Clark leaving and no defensive tackles signing in the previous cycle.

Florida’s top targets at the position include 4-star defensive tackles Tyler Davis and Jaquaze Sorrells, 5-star defensive end Kayvon Thibodeaux and 4-star ends Derick Hunter, Nathan Pickering and Lloyd Summerall.

Cornerback
Barring attrition, Florida won’t lose any cornerbacks in 2018. However, there’s only five players at the position at this time and two of them (C.J. Henderson and Marco Wilson) will likely leave for the NFL after their junior campaigns.

Returning safeties Shawn Davis, Brian Edwards, Chauncey Gardner and Brad Stewart all have the ability to change positions, and that may happen this spring for depth purposes. Nonetheless, the Gators need to sign two or three corners in their 2019 class.

Florida has offered more than 20 players at the position, including 5-star prospect Akeem Dent (Florida State commit) and 4-star corners Andrew Booth, Jaden Davis, Kaiir Elam, who is the nephew of former Florida safety Matt Elam.

Actually, in 2017, according to Rivals there was one 5* and five 4* recruits from MS. One of the 4* recruits enrolled in Miss State.

https://n.rivals.com/state_rankings/2017/mississippi

In 2018 there were three 4* recruits and Miss State signed all of them.
https://n.rivals.com/state_rankings/2018/mississippi

Found this on Mississippi recruiting:

Expect some intense recruiting battles in Mississippi, which is loaded with top-fight prospects

http://gridironnow.com/intense-recruiting-battles-mississippi-loaded-prospects/

The state of Mississippi has a bumper crop of prospects in the 2019 recruiting cycle, which should make for some wild times on the recruiting trail.

Over the past six cycles, the state produced 42 total players who were rated as four- or five-star prospects; that’s an average of seven per year. At this point in the 2019 cycle, there are 13 four- and five-star prospects; that’s on the heels of a 2018 class that had just four.

“It’s the best crop of football prospects we’ve had in Mississippi in a decade. There are several guys in this class with NFL potential,” said Steve Robertson, a recruiting analyst for 247 Sports who covers Mississippi State.

“Mississippi has had very talented classes before, but I cannot recall one as deep as the 2019 group,” said David Johnson, a recruiting analyst for 247 Sports who covers Ole Miss.

Four of the 13 already have committed: two to Mississippi State, one to Ole Miss and one to Alabama. Keeping that talent at “home” could be difficult for Bulldogs coach Joe Moorhead and Rebels coach Matt Luke.

“Ole Miss and State will have to beat out an out-of-state invasion from other SEC programs,” Robertson said.

Johnson said this class potentially could have 30-35 SEC-caliber players. “This state will be the hunting grounds for all of the blue bloods of college football this year,” he said.

The state’s top-ranked player is inside linebacker Nakobe Dean, a five-star recruit from Horn Lake High, about 25 miles south of Memphis. Dean is both a high-level player and a solid student.

“Recently, a Power Five head coach came by the school and Nakobe told the coach he would have to finish the visit after his next class,” Horn Lake coach Brad Boyette said. “That’s the type of kid he is.”

The four who already have made pledges: Running back Jerrion Ealy from Flowood Jackson Prep has committed to Ole Miss, athlete Diwun Black from Forest High and defensive end Charles Moore from Louisville High have pledged to Mississippi State and athlete Brandon Turnage of Oxford Lafayette County has committed to Alabama.

Dean and defensive end Nathan Pickering of Seminary High are Mississippians who currently are among the nation’s top 50 prospects overall. Ealy, Black, Moore and Turnage are among the top 100 overall.

Ole Miss leads in the number of commitments from the state’s top 25 with four; other than Ealy, defensive end Jamond Gordon from Meridian High, wide receiver Jordan Jernigan from Tupelo High and cornerback Jalen Jordan from Lake Cormorant High have pledged to the Rebels. Baylor and Miami are other schools with commitments from top 30 players in the state.

Top-50 overall athlete Mark Richards looking forward to Florida visits

https://www.seccountry.com/florida/florida-recruiting-mark-richards-visits

Mark Richards feeling Florida
Florida will host several recruits on campus this coming Saturday, including top target Mark Richards.

The Gators will host their first ‘Junior Day’ event and the top-50 overall athlete from Wellington High School (West Palm Beach, Fla.) plans to be in attendance.

“I’m going to take a visit there and see what they’re all about,” Richards told Die Hards’ David Wilson. “I’ll be there for the Junior Day and the spring game.”

Florida coach Dan Mullen has made Richards a priority in the 2019 recruiting cycle. The South Florida speedster also speaks with wide receivers coach Billy Gonzales and tight ends coach Larry Scott, his primary recruiter.

“I talk to a few of the coaches there,” Richards said. “Coach Dan Mullen actually flew down to my school along with a few other coaches. The coaching staff to me seems a little bit similar. They’re all kind of like the same people. They’re great people.

“Coach Larry Scott and Dan Mullen, they always try to come down and see me. It’s really about more than football with them. They ask how me and my family is doing. We’re getting to know them.”

Richards is ranked the nation’s No. 3 athlete and No. 39 overall prospect in the 247Sports composite. The 6-foot-1, 194-pound playmaker said the Florida staff is recruiting him as “offensive athlete” with the possibility of playing running back and/or wide receiver.

“I feel like the offense is going to get better,” Richards said. “Coach Mullen, you saw the years he had at Mississippi State. They were No. 1 at one point. I see what he did with [Tim] Tebow and the offense. I’m kind of familiar with that style because I run a similar offense at my school. So I guess I can kind of relate.”

Auburn, Florida and Miami are considered the top schools for Richards, but he is not naming leaders at this time.

“My recruitment is still open,” he said. “I’ll make a decision during the summer if I can. If not, then maybe November.”

News & notes
  • Richards competed Sunday in the Miami regional for “The Opening,” an annual combine for the nation’s top recruits at Nike world headquarters in Oregon. A half dozen Florida targets received invites to The Opening: 5-star running backs Noah Cain and Trey Sanders, 4-star wide receiver John Dunmore, 4-star offensive tackle Evan Neal, 5-star cornerback Akeem Dent (Florida State commit) and 4-star cornerback Kaiir Elam.
  • Florida extended an offer Sunday to Miami commit Brandon Cunningham, a 3-star tackle from St. Martin High School in Ocean Springs, Miss. Cunningham committed to the Hurricanes last summer.
