I don’t like devices that listen to literally every word spoken in my home.

If I want music I simply turn on my stereo and select the source I wish.
Oh please. Nobody is listening.

You're absolutely sure?? Having worked in a profession where electronic devices were perverted to whatever use was convenient, I wouldn't be so sure.. It's not paranoia, it's reality...

Start talking with your wife about your bank accounts including balances, passwords and social security numbers in front of these “smart” devices and THEN explain why we’re paranoid.

I do that every night. There's very little money in those accounts, so who cares?

BS. Most lawyers make more money than an enlisted guy. Or are you spending like there’s no tomorrow? I could arrange for my dad to give you a few lectures on that topic.

The problem is the paltry amounts that are coming in, not going out. I need to shake down the membership again.

Maybe you were sleep talking and she was answering?

Nope. In fact my wife and I were talking about the name of the USF Sundome changing its name to the Yuengling Center while driving in the car today – 1 hour later her iPhone then had an ad on Facebook for the Yuengleng Center.

In a recent conversation between 4-5 of us on a ferry, one guy had his iPad out. As we were having this very conversation about big brother tech, the iPad was taking keywords from our conversations and IMMEDIATELY loading (I think?) Google searches on the screen. Some of us started throwing out random topics to mess with the guy. I yelled “midget wrestling” to see how obscure his iPad was willing to go. He didn’t show us the screen again, so I can’t confirm success.

Ive tried this multiple times. No ads.

Of course, I have all that "Hello Google" crap turned off. Maybe you should too, if you can do it on an Iphone.

I didn’t know the guy well enough to know if his wife had a sense of humor. Btw, that’s WAY worse than what I was thinking. You should seek help.

If you are using a cellphone then I'd say you shouldn't be worried Alexa.

Alexa has been eavesdropping on you this whole time

Many smart-speaker owners don't realize it, but Amazon keeps a copy of everything Alexa records after it hears its name. Apple's Siri, and until recently Google's Assistant, by default also keep recordings to help train their artificial intelligences.

...
Saving our voices is not just an Amazon phenomenon. Apple, which is much more privacy-minded in other aspects of the smart home, also keeps copies of conversations with Siri. Apple says voice data is assigned a "random identifier and is not linked to individuals" - but exactly how anonymous can a recording of your voice be? I don't understand why Apple doesn't give us the ability to say not to store our recordings.

The unexpected leader on this issue is Google. It also used to record all conversations with its Assistant, but last year quietly changed its defaults to not record what it hears after the prompt "Hey, Google." But if you're among the people who previously set up Assistant, you probably need to readjust your settings (check here) to "pause" recordings.

...

I'm not the only one who thinks saving recordings is too close to bugging. Last week, the California State Assembly's privacy committee advanced an Anti-Eavesdropping Act that would require makers of smart speakers to get consent from customers before storing recordings. The Illinois Senate recently passed a bill on the same issue. Neither are much of a stretch: Requiring permission to record someone in private is enshrined in many state laws.

My wife and kids have Amazon tablets. A few nights ago around 2 am, I heard the creepiest sounding baby cry. I go back to bed thinking I must have been dreaming. The next night it happens again. Freaked me the hell out.

Long story short, it was an ad on one of the games the damn kids play. It would make the sound even with the case closed and in sleep mode.

Game deleted.
