From our friends at the NYT:

https://www.nytimes.com/2018/07/05/...latest&contentPlacement=6&pgtype=sectionfront

During a pre-race stroll though the pit area in Zurich, it was obvious that managing the heat generated by high-voltage electric car batteries is arguably a more vexing problem than range or charging time.

ABB, the electrical and industrial equipment manufacturer based in Zurich that is Formula E’s lead sponsor, has demonstrated technology that needs just eight minutes to zap enough power into a battery for about 120 miles of driving. But a recharging station with six of these high-voltage chargers would put enough strain on the electricity grid to cause a blackout and melt ordinary power cables, said Ulrich Spiesshofer, ABB’s chief executive.

The rest is quite long but for those interested in electric cars very interesting.

Some of this won't apply to commercial vehicles, others will.

Comment as you desire.

I am neither an opponent or proponent regarding electric vehicles, but I have always said that until they come up with a battery where you can drive 700+ miles without having to stop and place your finger in a socket to charge your car every 50 minutes, they will never be mainstream. This is America and people want everything easy and now! And as mentioned producing all that electricity does not just happen. there could be consequences. Just ask the moronic city commission in G'ville who thought burning wood to create more electricity would be cheaper and cleaner than producing it the old fashioned way. Well they were wrong on both accounts!

My SUV has less range on a tank of gas than my wife's Tesla. That's not charging every 50 minutes - on a road trip, it's about every 4hrs.. also known as 'stop to eat' time. Not every electric is a Leaf. The upcoming Tesla Roadster (admittedly a very expensive car) is expected to have a 600mi range.

How many ICE cars with a 700mi range for that matter. Maybe a few diesels?

So I guess I'm not the only one who noticed that smog got 3× worse when that piece of carp came on line. It's literally turning the whole town and campus black.

The trick to Li ion batteries for long life is to keep the charge % between 40 and 60.Heat being another factor, Some autos have a separate liquid cooling system for the battery pack.
The other trick is NOT to mess with the orange (or red) wrapped wire loom, That loom has wiring carrying 5000+ volts.
Tip to screw with Prius owners: Pop trunk and find the big orange plug, It's the battery cutoff

Edit... IMO unless Tesla gets its **** together people will start pulling their Tesla 3 orders, Of which (last I read) were in the area of 750,000 units with deposits paid.... Nice way to get a capital bump

They already are having some cancellations.

I always wonder how people who know almost nothing about a subject are so arrogant that they insist that they know everything. Like the model 3 production process designed by people who know almost nothing about mass production of vehicles.

I have ridden in a Tesla and it is a very nice ride, but as someone who spent his entire career in some form of finance, markets and economics, I could never bring myself to purchase the common stock due to its insane valuation. Obviously I missed out on several big moves in both directions, and have been told by "experts" that Tesla is NOT an automobile company, but a tech co. or a battery co., etc., but I am old school, if looks like a duck, walks like a duck and quacks like a duck, then it is a duck!. Tesla looks like a car to me, drives like a car so I think it is just a luxury car maker!

But can that duck pull a truck?

I have done the same, but I have a different point of view. If your investments are meeting your goals why do you need to make more money. Now if that more was hundreds of millions I would want that, but for somewhat normal people it is never that.

I would like to have a model 3 after they are proven in normal driving, but I am not paying the long term cost of one.

I wonder what might happen if advances in battery tech make the sorts of batteries used in Tesla and made at that giga factory obsolete. Sure the car could use a different type of battery, but that plant would go bankrupt.

I have a feeling there isn’t a topic like this on any UGA,Bama,Fsu, or any other major D1 programs sports forum, that cares about football first. Lol. This program has sunk to levels I never imagined.

Or our "program" (which includes all the sports) has evolved to a point where football is the first among equals. They are first because of money and the number of Gators on that team, they are equal because every team is important to this Gator.

Others can have different opinions that is fine.

I'd like to hook Nuss' and Mac's testicles to those charging stations. Let 'em ride the lightning.

I amend this statement: hook them up to the charger. Make them watch their game film.

Every time they play action pass on 3rd and long-Zap 'em. Every 3&out-Zap 'em. Poor situational awareness-Zap 'em.

Sadly for the majority of Gator fans your right in the fact that football is treated as an equal to the other sports by this administration. Which is why we've become the average football program that we are.

We have become the average program due to hiring bad coaches, especially the last one. Now many have ideas for coaches we could have hired, many of them are not realistic in my view. Hopefully with a new coaching staff, some improvements in facilities we will once again be more competitive with the best in football.

Thinking we are going to win all the time is not realistic, others with great programs desire that as we do.

And remember I want it to be first among equals. When I talk of equals I mean that I consider all Gators as part of my extended family, all are important to me. Sure I enjoy and follow football and men's basketball most, some female sports are boring to me. That said I am happy when those Gators win and have success, not only on the field but in the classroom and in life.

I hope that most Gator fans would agree with this position and not be like many Vole fans that live around me. They care about football only now, and only cared about women's basketball when they were excellent. They care almost nothing about their players or their success in life.

I don't think anyone on here doesn't want to see us be successful in all our sports programs, our overall athletic program has to be top 5 or so. Just want the football program to mirror that level or at least top 10 on a consistent basis, which I don't think should be an unrealistic expectation for UF.
