Safety position

I'm interested in everyone's take on the safety position this year. I'm a big believer that teams with a beast at FS or SS end up being really good. If you look at championship teams they almost ALWAYS have a total beast at safety. You can see differences in championship teams at QB play, RB, LB...but safety seems to be the consistent thread. I also wanna know how important SS is in Granthams D...He likes to send people which leaves guys on an island...whst role does the safety play in blitzing and pass coverage

ss- i think Amari Burney could be really good... Jeawon Taylor got better as the season went on(one of the few that did) Don't know much about Quincy Lenton

Fs- from everything I've seen, Chauncey Gardner-johnson worked really hard during the off-season. Whereas some other players social media was filled with just hanging out (ahem...Franks) Chaunceey was at EVERY camp possible, doing workout challenges etc
Shawn Jefferson us rangy but don't know much about his speed or leadership which is necessary at FS.

I have to agree, Quincy LeBron is well....an unknown. But the same can really be said about Shawn Jefferson. As for Franks, if he keeps thinking he's a FS he'll never win the QB job.

Changed the misspell ...As for Franks being included in.the S thread...I think you can see the context, I won't apologize for that one. But funny.

As Law says, we only play two or three teams that truly pass a lot. So, hopefully these guys can get their feet wet in the early games before we play anybody w a good QB.

Most of these guys added weight and there's more depth than last year. A lot of potential.

Great teams are great up the middle. People notice stats like sacks and interceptions but those are less important than being strong at DT, MLB, and safety, guys who tend to cause but not get the sacks and ints.

Grantham does play alot of single high man, so the free safety must he a great centerfield. You will get beat in man, it is just impossible to completely cover everyone. OLB tend to be the blitzers and the extra men in the box mean most guys just have one gap. This is different than most 3 man front teams where the big eaters must control 2 gaps.

The blitzers tend to be the OLBs (who are both hybrid DE types).

The strong safety must be able to cover or the other teams' OCs will exploit the weakness, but he must be big enough to play in the box too.

I dont know if that helps much bc every team is looking for that magical "run stopping beast and cover" strong safety, ala Matt Elam. Even though Major Wright played FS for us he fits the bill too.

Hmm. My view is that if your safeties are almost completely unknown, you probably had a good year. If your safeties are making a bunch of tackles, that means your DL and LBs are getting blocked or missing tackles. If your other DBs do their jobs, then your FS is deep in the middle and the QB throws away from where they are toward single coverage. If your SS does his job in coverage, then few passes go to the TE.

Certainly a FS with great speed and instincts can cover from sideline to sideline, helps your defense and may pick up some picks on an over throw by the opponents. I guess my view is the opposite of yours. A bad safety can stick out like a sore thumb, but a great safety can not make up for a defense lacking in other areas.

Burney will end up being All-SEC eventually if he isn't injury prone. Taylor has bulked up and he looks like he's going to be a really solid player. Shawn Davis added 15lbs too.
They gotta focus on tackling this year. They were really poor tacklers at certain times last year. Part of that is effort and who can blame them? Your offense sucks so much. No matter how much effort you put out, you still end up losing.

I'm guessing Shawn Davis?
Yup, I was just giving him crap. He butchered the post pretty well. Just having fun.

It’ll be interesting how Stewart, Davis and Edwards come along this year. Word was that Stewart didn’t like Shannon at all

Fvkki g disgusting that they marched Randy Shannon out there as interim.

We should have just forfeited the games.

A poor safety, SS or FS depending on situation, absolutely destroys any opportunity for a good defense. While this is certainly true against the pass, it’s most vitally critical in run support (especially in our league).

From my couch, there were innumberable times last year that most of defense did an adequate-not great-job of what they were asked (except the safeties). Even though I abhorred the scheme, the numbers would have improved dramatically if only the safeties could tackle.
This means you Chauncey, specifically.

Chauncey was in position countless times filling the correct area....only to dive face first into the turf somewhere close to a ‘backs shoelaces. This isn’t poor form or technique. It’s lack of intestinal fortitude.

To counter this, go back and watch Matt Elam fill & you get an idea what I’m talking about. A great safety makes a sometimes average defense awesome.

Curious to see who steps up this year.
