I’ll say this -

I’d rather have Mullen and staff with our boys than that Clown Taggart and all that talent in Trailerhassee.
We can correct some of the mistakes, move some personnel around, and better utilize our RBs and WRs... but the nulls are now saddled with a few years of Willie Ball with an expensive buyout.

String together a couple of good recruiting classes here and we’re back to at least a level of respectability.

I’m looking forward to seeing how Mullen and crew adjust and come out against the Rams next week.
This might be a good barometer for how the rest of the season goes.

:pumper:
(Anyone heard from NV this morning? I’m a little worried about him  )
Correct about Taggart....we could’ve ended up with the Turnover Backpack

Been watching Gator football for half a century and can't remember seeing both lines of scrimmage look this inept. And this was against a really bad team and a Ky team thats will probably lose 4-5 games.
At times it was almost embarrassing to watch the line play or lack of, I swear on Ky's long touchdown throw their QB could have eaten a ham sammitch back there.
To say Mullen has his hands full is a understatement. I have faith he can turn it around but its going to take time. I'll be the first to admit The "In all kinds of weather" is getting harder to live by.
I see a lot of folks say this. What I don't understand is why? I just don't get it. What is it that makes anyone think Mullen can build a championship program?

It can't be his SEC record since he has to show significant improvement just to get to 500. He's not an elite recruiter. His staff isn't impressive. He doesn't command a room or inspire simply by his unnerving self confidence, he's more of a goofy nerd.

And he just showed at least part of the reason why he has so many losses, fielding a team that looked unfocused and completely unprepared. And then despite being in his 10th year as a HC, he looked and sounded shell-shocked like an interim coach more comfortable behind the scenes than in front of the camera. On top of that, he was unable to make any meaningful adjustments.

As far as I can tell it is simply because folks want to believe he can do it, because there is zero objective data to suggest that he can that I can see.

We need to keep in mind that this is not an all or nothing predicament. We are better off than we were last year. There have been gains made in S&C and Franks is playing better than last year.

So here is something for both camps. We are now using the talent that Butters brought in. It was crappy talent, and Mullen can’t do a lot with it. You can’t make up for 3 years of tai chi with one offseason of lifting weights.

On the flip side, Mullen isn’t going to make this quick at all. Recruiting has gotten better but that was a low bar. I really don’t see great things on the horizon.

If Mullen makes some significant roster changes i’ll Be happy, but if he doesn’t then it shows how bad off we are.

Im not really that adept and comparing on 4-8 season versus another and determining which is the better 4- 8.

Technically 4-7 would be better than 4-8 so I guess that sets the bar at a challenging 5-7 for the Mullenz if he wants to show improvement.

Hey @cover2 What are your thought on the reason our oline is struggling is bc of the new scheme of gap blocking? It was mentioned it a few times by the sodeline reporter.

There's no way anyone can stop a force like that.

They are probably going to the SEC championship game I've heard. Maybe best team in the country with so many elite talents.

If you’re talking about UK, I think they will be competitive against UGA but lose and they could easily get 2nd in the east. They were stronger than us on both sides of the trenches and they have a strong run game with a dynamic QB. It doesn’t mean they are great, but the East sucks they could be the 2nd best of a shytty division.

The team had a bad day all around, until we get the o-line and d-lines up to SEC standards games like last night are going to happen. If we had Nick Saban, who by the way went 7-6 his first year at Alabama, we’d probably get the same results this year. Fixing the mess left behind by the previous two regimes is going to take time, you can’t fix 8 years of ineptitude in 9 months. I’m not sure if Mullen is the right guy or not but burning everything down and having a hissy fit after game 2 is a little extreme. You probably would have wanted Spurrier fired after he lost 45-3 to Tennessee his first season.

What was Smart's record at UGA his first year? Mullen has to show he can recruit...people will forgive a mediocre year if he shows better players, and thereby results, are on the horizon.

I don't think any scheme changes are as much the issue as poor fundamentals and lack of execution, which we have seen for the last several years from the OL group. The whole zone concept that is employed by many programs these days has the players higher than ever before and relying on lateral movement and engagement while on the move. Throw in three seasons of what has been described as "walk-through" practices and what translates to the field is what we see. I think the base blocking requirements now are maybe foreign to what has been required before, but the lack of execution, attention to details like the inside gap step and keeping an eye on the backside that you refer to, and the overall effort from some of the players has not and is not sufficient to get the job done against a motivated opponent. Another factor, the strength and conditioning aspect has improved, but as with the blocking rules, techniques, and fundamentals are still some seasons behind where they need to be. At least that is what it looks like from the games. This problem didn't just happen overnight and it won't be fixed quickly either, unfortunately. But they still could be better than we've seen!

For me I support him because he's what we have, you dance with the one you take to the dance. I know positively trumps negatively, Its easy to sit there and point out all the data pointing to why Mullen will fail but why?

He's ours at least for the next 3-4 years what GOOD does bashing him after two games do. If it makes you feel better then by all means vent (Ox says thats what chat boards are for).

I say give the man a chance to succeed, right now The Gators need our support, and I for one intend on giving them just that.

I don't argue with any of this, but it's making a different point. I was trying to figure out why so many say "I am sure he will succeed" or something along those lines. Your point here is he's ours so we will support him and hope he succeeds. That I can agree with.

I think those people are hoping for the best rather than fearing the worst. I Guess the question that remains to be seen is can Mullen fix the many deficiencies with the team he inherited. I'm guessing your on the side that thinks he has no chance in hell, I'm just saying give him chance to turn this mess around.
