I was replying directly to your statement that it was after the '94 season. The timing gave me one big disconnect.

Yes, i was mistaken on the year, and pretty mareially at that, since a lot happened bt 94 n 96, and id forgotten how the Nebraska game figured in.

Apologies...

Again, you said '94 season. The sale of the Bucs to the Glazers had yet to be finalized. I knew that couldn't have happened.

Whether it was more Foley's begging or Spurrier's conscience gnawing at him, I suppose we could debate endlessly.

Gotcha. Was misreadimg your posts.

Imagine that. The donk told me Mullen doesn't pass the ball. Not sure how we have won all these games without throwing the ball. Hmm...

1. I never said I was
Geez, where to begin...

1. Interesting that you own your support for mac and chump, but then csll out foley for not having the prescience to see what epic disasters theyd become. Imho, he took well calculated chances in both hires (thoigh i wouldn't have made either). Surprised u didnt throw zooker in there too...

2. Foley was a lot of things--worst uf disastr aint one of them. The guy was literally indispensably NECESSARY to ALL THREE Gator Natty's! He talked Spurrier into staying after 94 season. NB: we didnt win until 96.

He hired and closed the deal on urbs, ingeniously playing the wife angle (please spare me the enbarassingly baseless suggestion that he came here bc of machen, or thst machen made him hire urbs--AD works for UAA, not u. Pres). He also hired zook, who though unsuccessful on the gridiron, rocked the recruiting trail, picked so.fla clean, stripped Miami's juggernaught dynasty (got Coker fired 2 years after 1.9 nattys)....and who laid the NECESSARY, foundation for both of urbs nattys...

Thats without uttering a syllable about the dominance he facilitated in the other sports.

Yes, his last 2 coaching hires blew up in his face, and justly taint his legacy. Yes, he failed to see the facilities arms race that was taking place on his watch, and you can justly second guess that omission...

But give the devil his due--he was responsible for a pile of great things at uf, including (if not especially) in football, even overseeing excellent fiscal health of the program.

TBL, he is likely (if not certainly) not the best AD ever....but he is just as likely (if not as certainly) the best AD UF has ever had--and that's just from football vantage point.

Jmho/fwiw.
I never said I was happy about the Muschamp hire - misstatement of fact #1.
I also put my acceptance of the McElwain hire in context by referencing my frustration with the Muschamp fiasco. The baloney about JF "talking" SOS in staying is an urban myth. It was Foley's refusal to back Steve in his outing of the thuggery going on at the SOW that may well have been the last straw leading up to his departure - misstatement of widely perceived fact #2.

Lastly, if Foley and SOS were so tight, and Foley was the man driving the UM hire, why was Spurrier never formally contacted regarding his possible return? Factual incongruity #3. You do have one thing right though. JF created a great basketball program with the hiring of BD. The success of the baseball program is absolutely his doing, as are the several other programs that are doing so well. But Foley's hire of three failed FB HCs speaks for itself. Name another AD who achieved that dubious distinction and I'll retract my statement. Until then we can agree to disagree.

1. Bucs did offer SOS job, he was negotiating with them...and JF talked to SOS, and offered more $$$ than any CFB ciach at time. You can dispute JFs role in persuading SOS to stay, but those facts alone show thst JF was at lesst competent in dischsrging his duties, and did not fsll asleep at the wheel.

2. Darnell Docket teisting Earnest Grahams knee at bottom of pile, and JF not having SOS s bsck, was no doubt a sore spot, but nothing JF could havr done would hsve fixed EGs knee. This wss in 99-00, not b4 NC.

3. SOS left bc he saw the writing on the wsll, aftet Miami took one of Spurriers best ever teams, to. The. #$%&n. Woodshed, in New Orleans. It wss brutal. The gsme hsd chsnged, and spur's locker room wss not geared for yhe new terrain. Dsn Snyders 5 million other ressons provided a besutifully timed 'out '

4. I never suggested JF n SOS were buds, just a good working rship.

5. SOS left JF in a tight spot by bailing when he did, with so little warning. You want to csll it revenge for Dockett-Grahsm gste? Fine, but he gave every reason conceivable not to get special consideration when the position opened up again, by slamming the door shut on his way out. Cest la vie. (Note: i love Spurrier as much as any Gator, but not more than UF, and it wss as clesr to me as to most fans, thst Meyer > Spurrier, in '04-05).

So i maintain JF was indispensible to all 3 Ncs--instrumental in keeping SOS here long enough to win first NC, not bringing him back at expense of Meyer, and going after and closing on Meyer, which was good fir the 2nd n 3rd Crystal trophies.

(....and i reiterate, neither Meyer nor Spurrier wins 2nd NC without the bang up job zook did in recruiting--the guy JF had to hire on the fly bc Spurrier left is high n dry).

ANY coach would have done a bang-up job recruiting to UF during that time frame. Spurrier had the school on a huge national pedestal.

Bucs did offer SOS the job. But the Bucs were also extremely cheap in the offer. Now Foley did give SOS and Meyer (at the time for each) the highest paid contract for a NCAA head coach.

got your facts a little mixed up. it was the 2001 season, we were playing for a shot at the National Title game, we had to still play a rescheduled Tennesse game (now without Graham) we were playing for a shot at National Title.

Again year before (37-20) and we still finished 10th in the nation at the end of the 2000 season. Best ever teams, No. This was the year we couldn't decide on a quarterback until the MSU punt game. You think a team that lost to MSU, FSU and Miami was one of our best ever?

The timing of the leaving did put Foley in a tight spot. Less than a month before NSD. With the death of the player in summer/fall drills, Docket damaging EG knee, and stepping on Grossman's hand in front of the ACC officiating crew. But also being giving the highest contract ever given to an NFL coach at the time to join the Redskins. Can't really blame him for going.

Are you also going to credit the Bucs for being cheap in us winning our first National Title?

Name one, who was available, after late Dec 2001 (or wss it early 02), when Spurriet jumped ship...

..who would or could have out recruited coker in miami's backyard--while they were at crest of their 2nd dynasty (in the making, thzt is--was quickly dismantled, n moved up North, thx to our own zooker).

My points stand.

If JF doesn't show SOS the 'love', he prolly goes to NFL.

....nothing JF could have done, gets EG back for Tenn game....

....and SOS team not beating Mismi.

(...and btw, i said 1 of his best, not his best).

We'll never know. Foley got on the UF plane intent on bringing home the bacon. We ended up with week-old spam.

More like he brought home the whole damn pig. Lots more bacon than wed even figured, but which we couldn't enjoy until after we brought in the butcher, to butcher the pig.

On shaky ground.

sure... if the Bucs threw real money at SOS he might have gone. But you pretending that wasn't part of the equation is bias on your part. One of, if not the best coach in college football not being offered a middling salary in the NFL. Almost given an NCAA salary, why leave?

....nothing JF could have done, gets EG back for Tenn game....

True, but he had more fight with the ACC over their officals after the swindle, than protecting UF players. But you keep that defense going.

....and SOS team not beating Mismi.

Maybe, maybe not. Don't know unless we play. Can't play for a National Title, unless you are in the game.

(...and btw, i said 1 of his best, not his best).

So you are saying a team that is not in the top 3 of his 12 years at UF is one of the best? That's just because of your argument. It's not better than the 01 team, 95 team, 96 teams and maybe not better than some of the early 90's teams. So his 4 - 7 best team in 12 years is one of his best?

The dif. Bt the 2000 team and 01 was exactly 1 gsme--which was the Miami gsme. With Earnest Graham, i should point out. The following season, we didnt have to play them--they they were playing for, and won, the NC.

So to be honest, i think its a toss up bt 00 and 01. If DD doesnt twist EGs knee (or 9/11 doesnt happen), we prolly beat Tennessee...and face Miami again, for NC.

Maybe we win...but aftet the sugar bowl the yesr b4....didnt seem too promising.
(Miami dominated both sides of LOS...)

But ok, your point is well taken--thats why they play game.

...but its also still hypothetical la la land.

1000s of things can happen to blow a NC run, and sometimes u need a break (eg-- neb losing n osu winning, to clear path fir us in 96...). So it vuts both ways.

Im taking the facts as they are, mot as they mighta been. I see urbs closed tge desl on 2 ncs.

Maybe spurs could have too, but in his best 12 years, he closrd om one.

...and foley closed on meyer....

So, FTSOA, you want to give zero crrdit to JF for 96, you cant take away 06 n 08, which is still 2x morr than spurs.

...leaving JF as the best AD UF ever had, just in football.

...anf certsinly not the worst, or even horrible.

TBL, yall cry foul for me stretching to give 9lfoley cred for 96 ...as you contort yourselves into pretzels, to drny him any credit for 06 or 08.

It's patently inconsistent and disingenuous.

Give the devil his due. Fault him for his actual shirtcomings, like macElchump, and failing to recognize the facilities arms race...

Move on.
