Truth Takes: Do You Know What A Score Line Is?

Sorry I didn't post a preview.

I decided to use that #GatorsWifi (seriously, that's the stadium wifi) to play with twitter some pre-game.

Rant:
A few things happened today. We had another 3 score comeback win on the season, Will Muschamp lost, and I somehow got re-tweeted by Luke Del Rio. If he decided to read my timeline he would know that I am not a big fan of his. If you saw a picture of the empty Student Section on Twitter shortly before kickoff, right before the Anthem to be exact, there's a good chance it was my picture. Shout out to the failure who called me out with the "fake news" tag, only to admit in the same tweet that the photo was real and that the Student Section did fill in more by "the end of the First Quarter". Yea, so what I tweeted about students not being there when I took the photo was 100% accurate, no reply from him, good job. Then another guy wanted to step up and call me out because I said that attendance would be lower this week 6-7 days ago (announced attendance says it was higher by like 3 1/2-4,000). Except, and I was clear in the first tweet, I was specifically calling out the student section and that I understood people not driving for hours to the game. Again, no reply, funny how people wanna step until they get called on their foolishness.

To the Game!

Pre-game, I asked my mom and the rest of the group I was with if they thought the boo birds would be out if South Carolina scored and we went 3 and out on our first drive. Well, that was prophetic. Heck, people around me were wondering allowed why Trask didn't get the start...no further comment necessary.

Offense:

What a slow start...again. We have now been outscored 48-3 in our last 6 games in the first quarter. Shoot, just started watching the broadcast...I where what McElroy was wearing every week. Burning that shirt and tie.

This is the rushing attack I envisioned coming into the season. Our line actually got down field and got some push. Scarlett and Perine showed why they are the best tandem after contact in the SEC. Scarlett I know was leading the SEC in either broken tackles or yards after contact, maybe both a few weeks back and should be right there. Perine is underrated. Both were very physical and found holes when the line did their job. We made an effort to get Toney the ball and it paid off. Should have been obvious to do, but it wasn't. Franks being a willing runner helped them out as they actually had to respect him for once. His yards are low due to some early fumbles and ypc is lower from the short runs and two sacks, but overall not bad. Also, victory formations. Not great, but best we've seen out of him.

One critique, I'm sick of seeing players run out of bounds. Several times if our guy cuts back in, he has blocks where they could get a lot more yards. It may be moot because we won the game, but there will be games where those extra yards will be crucial. Heck, your physical backs, lower the shoulder and knock that DB over. Obviously, this comment is not about when we are trying to stop the clock.

The biggest overreaction I have seen or heard are the people apologizing for doubting Franks (the call in show was full of them). Don't get me wrong, he had a good game. However, his deficiencies weren't exactly shown to be better. He didn't take a single deep shot. He did have some good intermediate throws. I do have to shout out his downfield blocking. The first time he missed a block, on his first attempt, people will saying "he can't even block." This is partially true. He did get down field after this and make some lead blocks. Nothing powerful, but even mirroring guys was effective. He also ran the best we have ever seen. He truly did look like a willing runner. I wanted to kick the ball to tie and trust the Defense to get us the ball to drive to score as they had the momentum. Franks wanted the ball and he put it in. Good for him. Even his punt wasn't bad...gunners should have tried to catch it from the air. Bounce was unlucky high.

Franks Passing:
  1. Dump to Scarlett for a gain of one.
  2. Good slant throw to Krull for 10 and a first down.
  3. Good throwaway. No one was open. It looks like Lewis may have been open on camera, but the safety definitely could have made a play if he attempted it.
  4. High throw that should have been picked. Issue here is he was rolling left and trying to hit a receiver that was breaking right. Right receiver, wrong way to attempt the throw.
  5. Screen to Hammond for 17 yard gain.
  6. Screen to Hammond for a 6 yard gain.
  7. Screen to Toney on the left and he cuts all the way to the right to get a first down. Franks did a good juob getting down field to get in the way of some defenders.
  8. Rollout pass to Gamble for 11 yards and a first down.
  9. Screen to Hammond for 3 yards.
  10. Poor pass behind Pitts on 3rd and 11.
  11. Good 19 yard throw by Franks to Cleveland. Good job by Cleveland to break the route to get open.
  12. Bad pass to the feet of Toney.
  13. Pass well over the head of Van Jefferson on 3rd down, bad pass.
  14. Screen pass for a gain of 1 on a 3rd and 22.
  15. Good throw to Grimes for 15 yards and a first down on a slant. We got a good spot on this play.
  16. Terrible throw. Possibly could have been intercepted. Overthrew the receiver on a slant route.
  17. That ridiculous pass on the run where the ball hits the defender on a throw to Gamble and caught by Grimes for a first down.
  18. A hitch for 10 yards to Hammond for a first down.
  19. Screen to Toney for 18 yards and the TD. (Note, we are down by 10 here and we only throw 2 more times)
  20. Good sideline throw to Lewis. I am as shocked typing this as you were watching/reading this, Lewis didn't drop it.
  21. Good throw to Jefferson for 14. Jefferson does something nice here that I would like to see more players do. He didn't have any room to run so he stopped and dove forward. By doing this he gained 3 extra yards. Had he tried dancing or running into the defenders, he gets 0-1 yard. (Last pass, worth noting Perine breaks a TD run. We don't pass, but are trying to come from behind. That's rare..)
There you have it. Not many throws going 10+ in the air and only 8 of 21 throws were completions thrown past the line of scrimmage. I think this may be a path to victory, but he's got to be better because other teams will pick some of those poor throws. If we are forced to throw, we could see the same Franks we saw in other games where we were forced to throw, namely Kentucky, Georgia, and Mizzou. How'd those games end? Good job by Mullen though by masking his deficiencies and poor job by Muschamp by not taking away the screens with press coverage.

Defense:

Letting this South Carolina team move at will the first two drives is inexcusable. Letting Samuel have the slant throughout the game and for that 90-yard pass is awful. Play the slant and have a safety over the top after the first two. Stiner continues to not impress.

The passing defense isn't the only issue. The second drive in particular allowed us to be gashed on the ground.

Until the 4th quarter, every time the defense got to dancing with the music, they would give up a first down. Usually, this was on third down. Several times our D wasn't set when they snapped. Has to get better. Reminds me of the defensive failures in the Zook era. My dad would complain about the dancing leading to bad defense and 15 years later its still a thing.

Many in my section were confused on the pick near the end of the game. They didn't realize Mullen called the timeout before the 3rd down play. They thought the INT was a 4th down incompletion and wondered why the ball was spotted where it was. Truth be told, there didn't seem to be a whistle until after the play happened. With all that said, it was the best pick I think Henderson has had. He actually made a play on a ball to earn the pick, most of his others, if not all, are the benefits of severe overthrows.

The only thing that makes me feel decent about this defense right now against FSU is how bad FSU's O-line is. But, I've heard that song before and our line not make any noise.

Quick Hits:
  • I was not happy with Scarlett sliding inbounds. Why? One, see what I said before about cutting back inside, but on replay I see that actually wasn't possible. Two, I thought he was doing it so we could take a knee, but there was too much time still to do that, again I see he didn't have the situation I thought he did when he slid. Three, ok, it was a smarter play than I want to admit, but his next run for a first down, was enough.
  • Speaking of, people were saying to punch it in. I said that mathematically the game is over with a knee at that moment. Humorously, but seriously, someone I was with said to forget about the math for a second and try to punch it in. The admitted to folly shortly thereafter after.
  • It's Week 11, still people freaking out about fair catches on kickoffs. Embarrassing.
  • Dameon Pierce, #29 in your Programs, #27 on the field because 9 weeks is too short to make this change.
  • The shushing. Want to stop the shushing, show us you are better at what people are calling you out on like Jake Fromm did.
  • Well, at least we aren't FSU or Miami right now.
  • Trey Sanders, the #1 RB recruit, was in the house. How well does the running game today look to him? Especially when he knows more dynamic QB and O-line play is supposed to be coming.
Next week, we should have an easy game. We will see.

Watching at home, I'm pretty sure he baited the QB into making the throw. He had plenty of help inside, but what tells me this is he drifted way to the outside when there was no reason to do so. It didn't appear to me the WR cut in to get separation on CJ, nor was there any other USCe players out wide to pull him - he simply drifted, intentionally I believe, to make the QB think he had the window so that CJ could pounce on it.

So much stupid there. There is a reason that guys like SOS and Creyer take the points and slit their throats and morons like Butters take a knee.

Either of the Scarlett runs I 100% want him to score. I was all about Malik Davis scoring against Vandy last year.

When the time is down, I 100% take the knee. I would wager that in that particular set of time, even Spurrier takes that knee. If you could show point out a close game where Spurrier was going to the end zone instead of taking a knee, whether at Duke, Florida, Washington, Tampa, or South Carolina, I would be interested. I'm not saying there's 6 minutes left, we throw deep. I know he ran up the score plenty, but I can also put on FSU '97 and see a knee being taken. I'm talking 1:40 left, knees end the game, and we go for the end zone. I can't think of any, but my memory is limited.

Agreed. Score score score. I guess that's why I am a recliner QB.....

With all due respect to anyone who would NOT have taken a knee on 1st down with 1:40 left and USCe out of timeouts, that would have been a cause for immediate dismissal. Risk vs. reward. The idea is to have the least number of exchanges as possible when the game is "mathematically" over. Sure anything can happen. but what if you have 2 exchanges on 1st down, don't score, then what? 2 more exchanges on 2nd down? No way !!!!. The reward of increasing the number of football exchanges in no way outweighs the risk in that situation. In that situation, the only answer is to have the least amount of exchanges possible. Just ask Joe Pisarchik and Larry Csonka. The NY football Giants made Herm Edwards famous before he became a coach!!!!

I'd also point out, that we had already fumbled 2 exchanges in the game and the bad snap on the insane third down. I play it safe in that particular situation. Again, before the final first down, score and don't go down just so we can take a knee. But if we hit that point, let's not give Franks or whoever a chance to ruin that.

Fine presentation, Truth. Glad this time wasn't a case of the Truth hurts. I don't like the non-return kickoff. I really like your 21 passing points. I can read them and think about their meaning and recognize development or stagnation. Thanks and keep it up, please.

Don't need any scheme to prevent a slow start against Idaho, do we ?

I'm glad they took the knee, so the Cocks could cover. and I could get the pick right. LOL

Plus, it was sweet knowing how painful it was to them to just see us kneel away the game after they should have had it in the bag. That was pretty evident by the frustration of their players on the last few plays. A hopeless feeling, for sure, knowing we're not even trying to score when we likely could.

I was calling for the Victory Formation. No reason to Petrino in that situation. Objective was achieved. Game won. Rub it in via the Victory Formation. No need to possibly injure one of our defensive players as Carolina did all kinds of wild offensive plays to attempt the comeback

Hopeless? They were overjoyed we didnt try scoring. Im sure they were doing exactly as instructed blowing up the center. They knew all they need to do was shake up an already shaky center and be setup for a game winning hail mary. They werent going to just give up when they were only one bad snap from winning.

I don't think so. They yanked that guy from the game and he looked inconsolable on the sideline. Looked more like frustration to me. Ymmv..

Truth, sounds like you sit in a section chalked full of retards.

My biggest take away from the offense in this game: Mullen actually let Franks be a "dual-threat" QB. Franks ran hard and got some really good, tough yards. His rushing total was diminished by a few tackles for loss due to bad exchanges, sacks, etc. But when it was a designed run, he actually ran hard. I liked that. His "shushing" aside, he played a better than usual game (for him).

The best part? I sat in one section in the first half and another in the second half. My mom texted me at halftime that the row in front of her was empty (which basically means that me and mine should move to her section).

I've generally found that most fans that as a general rule (there are exceptions, of course), the more vocal people are at the games (I'm not talking about getting loud for the defense) the less they actually know.
