Cooter... Thanks for including us in your project, I can feel your sense of Pride in rebuilding this Historic House. I hope whoever will live and raise another Family here will Honor your effort and always remember that someone chose to rebuild rather than replace.

Thanks for your interest and everybody's kind remarks. The work really is quite gratifying. Over the years I have been involved in a number of historic restorations or conversions and when the funding includes bond money or tax credits to go along with conventional money, there is usually a great deal of anxiety that comes with each project. Taking historic tax credits are even more confining. To date the owner has been financing this work out of pocket and I don't have any financial exposure so it's like getting paid to tear stuff up and have fun putting it back together. The owner and his extended family are great folks.

If I had to pick pallbearers from Gatorchatter, Cooter would be one of the first mentioned. He’s a good dude.

In the last month I finally got the shed dormer portion of the bedroom expansion upstairs as well as roof over the master bedroom removed and the new gable framed. Its slow work and it seems like it rains 2 of the 3 days I am there every week. Last month we ordered the windows and siding and after the owner's check cleared we were notified that the windows and exterior doors would not be delivered until sometime in late February instead of December 24. Without the windows and doors we can't start the siding. I finally got the manufacturer to agree to split the order and at least make a partial shipment which they now have promised by January 18. I know this window and door situation is not going to end well but I have plenty of other work to be done.

Shed dormer and master bedroom gable foof framed. The window openings in these rooms have been framed but not cutout to minimize rain getting inside. The roofing has been completed in these areas with exception of some flashing. The porch beam replacement and posts set on rear, and the house wrap is now going on.

I have also started the masonry repair to the fireplace that was demo'd in what is now the master bath. The opposite side has a firebox that serves the family room that will remain and be functional.
Before closing this up I have parged the back of the throat and chimney with a heat resistant mixture of portland cement, sand, fireclay, and lime. As you can see about 20% of the chimney walls had been removed. This fireplace also supports a third masonry fireplace and 35 feet of brick directly above it. The brick and mortar are soft and somewhat crumbly so we are working to get it stabilized.

Needing a flat surface to begin replacing the missing masonry, I poured an 18" reinforced concrete beam.

One other little project we have going on is the old barn. High winds this year took out the upper front wall so we will try to keep this building from falling down as well.

Well part of the windows finally arrived this week after much teeth gnashing and threats. Plumber completed his top out and this week finally cut a deal with both an HVAC contractor who will start sometime next week and an insulator. Im now beginning to work towards buying cabinets having finished up a layout last week. The guys I have working to repair the barn should finish that work over the weekend and will start the exterior board and batten siding. We also finshed putting down the front deck floor last week and have now started on the rear deck.
Both the front and back porch ceilings will receive 1x6 tongue and groove v-joint yellow pine as finish.

We also finished the structural masonry repair to the back of the fireplace so hopefully it now won't come tumbling down. Still need to place a new concrete floor in all three groundfloor fireboxes before the brick mason can lay the new brick facings.

Here are pictures of our old family farm house built around 1850 my mother, grandmother and probably great grandmother were born in this house on the Stidham farm just north of Gainesville. It burned down on Aug 15 2017 My cousin still lived in it. It was uninsured because insurance companies won't insure a 150+ year old house.
