Zook wasn't a great recruiter, he was nothing more than a time-slot hit; the UF brand was huge at that time because of Spurrier. If Zook was our head coach now, he wouldn't be faring any better than Mullen.
What? He was a great recruiter. Do you know how many top 25 recruiting classes Illinois has had in the entire recruiting sites history? 2. Both were zooks. He had a top 20 class at Illinois.

The claims that we don't have great recruiters and we've fallen from grace in general can absolutely coexist. There's a reason why I began and ended my post with the statement that some, possibly much, of our problems are related to the recruiters themselves.

But what we're witnessing today isn't some new phenomenon. As other's have said, this is basically a re-run of virtually every class dating back to 2011, with 2012 being the lone exception. And even that one had us losing a Tampa kid to Usc and Diggs to Maryland, with many people asking the question, "why can't we land a ____?"

For close to a decade, with many interchanging parts and personnel, we've largely sang the same song every single NSD. Kids who'd start the Spring game going to be a guaranteed RS behind 5 players at another school. Kids playing us all along only to make a bizarre pick at the end. We used to land kids the moment they got an offer at FNL. That's not happening anymore because the luster we once had isn't there right now. Hopefully, it's a trend that will run its course with some overall improvements. But it's been going on since well before Mullen.
The lack of success hasn't stopped Herman who took over a program that had 3 losing seasons in their last 5 years before he showed up.

Watch this and you'll get your answers in 5 minutes.

Imo mediocre at best recruiters, a decade of trash football, and section 8 housing football facilities absolutely can and do coexist with us right now.

Only of the three can be remedied immediately.

The other can and should have been rectified largely in a year, but UAA wants to squeeze squeeze squeez the alums.

I'm assuming you meant to put "one" there, and I'd agree. Now, it's technically not over yet. But if we should see the type of finish that most are expecting, changes need to be made immediately. The other factors will sort themselves out with time. I do think the we helped our cause with the 9 wins this year, but if no upgrades are made, we're going to be running into a chicken vs egg scenario very quickly.

Things are so low you guys are openly pining for Ron Freaking Zook, who is scrubbing floors at a bank right now. He was such a great recruiter that Illinois fired his ass.

What's next? Maybe Muschamp wasn't so bad? Butters didn't get a fair shake?

I'm all for jokes, but that's ridiculous.

Im still trying to figure out why things are so low around here.

And ... thought zOoK's recruiting abilities were generally acknowledged as one of the best while he was here at UF and he is scrubbing that floor because he can't do anything else ... like coach?

I assume you are joking, but Zook has been the special teams coach for the Green Bay Packers for 4 years now.

I will say, because Zook could recruit then doesn’t mean he could now. A lot has changed since then.

Unfortunately....and like Muschamp & Butters, Ron Zook is a multi-millionaire spending his UF money somewhere enjoying life.

But, he's actually the ST's coach for the Packers:

Just looked at '07 and you're right. Fell off a cliff after that, though. The class rankings were decent, but the overall production was sub-standard.
Yeah, there was a year or two where a bunch of kids never even made it on campus
