We need some beasts at DL...I am thinking Grad Transfers or JUCO.

Not sure if there are many DL Early Grads...I've I always been told DL were not the brightest lights in the stadium.

Honestly, we don't "need" any grad transfer DL's. I'd take a sophomore who has to sit out next year, but that's if we can't land a HS kid. We need freshman DL for the future of the team, not for 2019 or 2020, but for 2021 and beyond. I can't see any way Lang stays at TE, unless he's just lighting it up. I wouldn't be surprised to see one of the 7 true freshman OL's take some snaps this year at DT also. Hopefully we get at least one more big-body DL in this class and it won't be as big of an issue.

I am not too worried about 2020 and beyond...This staff seems to be well ahead of the game.

You may forget, some of the HS kids come into college with 1-2 years credit already. Some of these Grad Transfers have 2-3 years left.

I do agree w/ you on the grad transfers helping. But honestly, you should be worried. That's how you build a championship program - signing HS studs. Adding a transfer/grad transfer/juco is a bandaid fix. It fills holes in the roster (usually from poor recruiting and/or recruiting misses from previous seasons). In all honesty, a freshman class shouldn't produce very many productive players - IF you have a solid roster. So, missing on freshman DL's will/could put us in a hole in 2021 and beyond. You are right that grad transfers have changed things...but we could end up w/ a Mason Halter or Austin Appleby next time rather than an Adam Shuler type player. I'd rather see us reach our recruiting goals each class and develop a HS kid. This thread asked "what do we still need", and that's what I was trying to answer.

Brother,

I am not worried about Mullen in 2020 because he is far ahead in obtaining Talent for 2020. I think this trend will just get better.

And for y'all who think Coach "O" at LSU is a corn dog eating buffoon...have you seen his recruiting? Like I said, they love the guy.

So far has CDM taken any transfers other Jefferson, Grimes, & Shuler? While I generally agree with your post, CDM went 3 for 3 on those transfers, so for me he gets the benefit of the doubt for a while.

So you're saying you'd rather just hope that we get grad transfers vs. signing elite HS talent AND hope that those transfers pan out? Again, I get it - you want to "trust the coaches". But at the end of the day ask yourself: is this how Clemson & Alabama are building their rosters? Is this how championship teams build championship rosters? Again, this thread asks "What do we still need" - and we don't "need" grad transfers. Those are short term gaps. We're not hurting for 2019. We need stud HS DL's in this class for the long-term future of the program (and in CFB, "long-term" usually means 2 to 4 years down the line since kids can only play 4 to 5 years). Grad transfers are a bandaid fix - and we don't "need" them next season.

We need DTs, ILBs, and Safeties...
I don't think we have any inside linebackers even on our board. not much interest in (real) defensive tackles either.

at this point I'm beginning to think it's a coaching decision to play small.

No, that's why I said I generally agreed with your post. Prior to this year, I don't really remember any recent transfers (non-JUCO) who panned out - though I liked Appleby's attitude, even if his talent wasn't what was needed. So I have been generally against it. The #1 method for filling the roster should always be through adding HS recruits. (And we absolutely need stud HS DLs in the incoming class) I only meant that if CDM feels he needs to add a few veteran transfers to make up for the prior regimes recruiting failures, to shore up the line up while the younger guys are developing, then based on his track record, I am not going to complain. Just like JUCOs, it is a temporary fix, so if he adds a bunch, and if it is at the expense of a roster spot for an elite incoming Fr., then it will be a recipe for failure. I completely agree that long term success will only come the way Bama & Clemson are doing it. As for "need," I do expect the HC has the best knowledge, or at least better than mine, of what his roster needs. BTW - The last two HCs have made me very skeptical of ever just "trusting the coaches." Or at least, probably for a long time.
