Proposed on-the-field rule changes

For me, I have always thought the one thing the NFL right does that NCAAF doesn't is Pass Interference. It seems ridiculous that PI over 15 yards is not a spot foul. The DB has no incentive not to foul on a long play if he thinks he's going to beaten.

As the man likes to say, discuss.
I couldn't disagree with you more. There's nothing that boils my blood more than the NFL PI rule. I understand your stance regarding interference wiping out big plays, but there's no penalty egregious enough to warrant a 50 or 60 yard infraction. It's only 10 when the offense does it so it should probably be 10 on defense, as well.

You guys are whimps. Non down-by-contact and one-foot-in-bounds are wussy rules, seemingly made more for Pop Warner football. Anyone who is for them sits to pee.

Most times I do just that, so not anything to me.

So I should have said make it like high school where the clock doesn't stop for a 1st?

Actually Dougie, what you should have said is, "yes sir!"

For myself and others, the college game is already fun. I see no reason to make it some bastardized form of the NFL with less talented players.

I don't respect you enough to get a "Sir". No one is trying to bastardize it. I don't like the freezing of the clock on first down. And even though I prefer the college game to the NFL game doesn't mean there aren't improvements that can be made.

Good point but the reality is that receivers are receivers because they can catch and are the intended target. CBs are CBs because they can't catch and aren't nearly as likely to actually catch the ball.

If they are going to insist on having targeting they need to have some progressive penalties instead of throwing a player out immediately. Ridiculous

I think 15 and a personal foul is good enough. Two and they are out.

I get the intent of the rule. For good or bad, questionable science and ambulance chasers have forced this. And there is no doubt that people didn't spear and play this way when helmets were leather.

Some of these hits are very minor though. Moreover if they are going to hit the defense, I guess they need to require ball carriers to keep their heads up. That causes hits to the head too. Lowering the head is also a development of the helmet era. If you look at old leather helmet power backs, they made their yards primarily with stiff arms. Today people would say that Jim Brown runs to upright.

D holding is tricky. If you take away the automatic 1st down there is not enough incentive for a defender to not hold a man who has him beat.

It's a spot file like it is on the line. So in most cases it's a 7/10 yard penality.

I wish both college and the NFL would go away from the "must have indisputable evidence" approach to instant replay. If the goal is to get it right, it shouldn't matter what the initial call was. Slow things down, freeze frame and look at it objectively. Based on those advantages, with the newly available angles, how would you call the play.

It would also save us from the same "remember, it was called ____, so we need indisputable evid...." explanation which has become one of the most annoying things in the game. Yeah we know how it works. Thanks.

I was under the impression defensive holding is 5 yards and automatic first down. Ball is in the air its a PI. If the hold happens prior to ball in the air its 5 and a first

If you're down, you're down. How does some guy running up to you while you're down and "tagging" you like a preschool girl add to the game? The NFL should switch their rule to NCAA, not the other way around. Then we wouldn't have to watch replays to see if somebody touched somebody else's shoelace in slo mo to decided if he was "tackled" or not.

Targeting should be an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty, not an ejection. A targeting call plus another dust up in the game is 2 USLC penalties and you're disqualified. "Team" USLC penalties should not count toward the second penalty, but a team penalty could be used to eject the next individual that commits a USLC violation.

You gotta make a call on the field before you go to replay. There is no other way to make it work. Sometimes the replay doesn't show what happened. The call on the field is simply the tiebreaker when its a tossup.

NFL should switch to one foot in bounds. Makes for more spectacular catches and widens the field.

Bring back the rule about pushing the pile. These rugby scrums are ridiculous.

Stop letting coaches call timeout. Make a player on the field do it.

Any time the game is stopped to attend to an injured player, that player can't come back on the field until there is a change of possession or a timeout is called.

The current rules are 5 and a first, I disagree with it being a first. If it is 3rd and 20, receiver gets held in the first 5 yards of the route. Should that really be a first down or 3rd and 15?

It's a Pop Warner rule. Not surprised you're all for it.

A ball carrier should never be down without being touched by the opposition. Ever.

The "30-second timeout" is bullsh*t too. Another rule to speed up the game for TV. When a team calls a TO they need a breather, need to slow momentum, re-group, etc. The "30-second timeout" was only instituted to speed up the game. Note to the NCAA: Stop F*cking w/ the clock rules!
