Danger to college football? XFL will take players after less than 3 years; even high school

They have even mentioned they could take players directly out of high school. Is this the wave of the future? Younger players that don't want to go to class go to one of these developmental leagues instead of college?

"Luck has said the league will pay salaries in the $250,000-$300,000 range for top players (i.e. quarterbacks) for what could be a five-month commitment. That’s an alternative for a player who doesn’t want to develop his skills for room and board and the opportunity to take classes which fit into his football schedule."

Oliver Luck: XFL will consider taking players before eligible for the NFL Draft

Discuss.

Using Lawrence as an example. He just won a title, he has nothing more to prove at Clemson, but he has 2 more years before he goes to the NFL. He could go to the XFL and earn $600,000 over a two year period and then head to the NFL. If you are going to play and risk injury anyway, you might as well get paid.

College basketball is already hurt badly with their stupid one-and-done policy, now this.

Eventually college football could end up like baseball, where 95% of the most talented high school kids take a chunk of change to play in the minors, while college baseball gets the scraps.

Lawrence is good that's for sure....But I think the more important question is what would he do with his long golden locks?

It could be a game changer if it survives. But, that’s a big if.

If it folds after year 1, all those high schoolers or college freshmen will be locked out of the NCAA and the NFL, the latter for only 2 years.

The players will probably take the risk for a $100k payday, but many won’t.

I could see in 20 yrs or so where the Universities are paying players and the players are enrolled but paying their own way for classes and board. There is just too much money involved now. A couple sharp lawyers are going to eventually break the NCAA.

:rolleyes4:

By sharp lawyers you mean dumb judges?

There is zero legal reason to treat a kid playing a sport as an employee just because a school sells tickets to the events. Zero.

Yeah, could you imagine? Pay these dumbfvkks maybe 20k-30k a year, let Uncle Sugar take 40%, then charge them tuition of 17-50k a year. :lmao2:

Even this new XFL is only going to pay 50kish.

Well its a charade now. Make them employees. A seperate entity instead of this bull we live with now. Just the fact that a kid can not willingly transfer and play is a joke. That alone is against all free market principals.

That has nothing to do with being an employee or not.

And I agree with you on this.

And scholarship limits.

Well maybe $20-30k for bench warmers. The talent will command much more. Give me one reason they should not share in the profits? Be paid for the risk they are taking?

They are sharing in the profits. Most of them get far more than they are worth. It's just a union.
