I think the staff turnover issue can be overblown. Urban, Saban, and Fisher have shown it doesn't matter if you have a system in place (Fisher replaced 6 coaches the off-season before they won the NC). Smart learned a lot from Saban, and I think replacing coaches isn't an issue for him (especially w/ the analyst/QC positions - most of those guys are former position coaches/OC's and some are former head coaches waiting for an opening).

I agree w/ @ltraz on this. Again, Smart learned a lot from his time under Saban so I'm not as sold as Law is that he's going to be as hard-headed as Muschamp and go w/ another pro-style OC. We'll see. This is Smart opportunity to "open" up the offense (at least more than they've done).
Part of why he hired Chaney initially was to appease Jacob Eason and his family. If you recall, Eason was taking a serious look at UF, but once Kirby hired Chaney, Eason re-affirmed his commitment (either that or he spent enough time around Butters and Nuss to figure what they were all about). As a new coach coming in, he did not want the optics of losing a 5* QB recruit to his biggest rival. Ironically, Fromm ends up beating out Eason anyway and he transfers to Washington. Can't help but wonder if Mullen would have modified his offense to fit Eason's skill set or if Eason would have been a decent enough runner. I suspect Feliepe might actually be a better fit, but who really knows?

As in Tony Romo? Why would Saban consider hiring a guy with zero coaching experience and zero recruiting experience and zero connections to the Southeast? And zero Super Bowl rings to show off to potential recruits?

Not saying it may not be true but it makes no sense whatsoever. He is not such a big name in the football world as to step into a job of that stature.

All valid points, however...it is Alabama and if any school can recruit itself it's bama. Dude absolutely knows the game one end to the other. I said it was crazy

Romo has a great thing going in the booth, and quite frankly I like him a lot better now than as a player.
Seems like taking the Bama job would be an odd career move.
Maybe an NFL OC - but college?

Cheney cashed in:

Tennessee: Jim Chaney has a 3-year contract starting at $1.5 million and rising to $1.7 million. He’ll be college football’s second-highest paid offensive coordinator in 2019.

In the past I’ve read Gran is a slimy recruiter. I believe it. Has a great resume with RBs, but very little OC experience other than his couple of years at Kentucky. Would be a meh hire kind of like Diaz at Miami.

Ugly wants to run the ball. Gran does it. No worse than any other hire imo and Gran is a great recruiter.

Strictly a money issue. Kirby raised him 100k a year ago, and after one counter to Tennessee the total ante stood at plus-60%. For an assistant.

Smart has other guys he needs to pay just as much.

Heard on the radio while driving home that the Dwags had the option of matching the Voles offer, but declined. Kirby is likely to promote from within for both OC and DC because he won’t change his offensive or defensive philosophy. He’s an elite recruiting Mushchump.

1.5m is rock star money. My guess is they can find someone to call running plays cheaper.

Posted in the coaching changes thread, but UGA is promoting from within:

Georgia: Co-offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach James Coley has been promoted to offensive coordinator. He steps in following the departure of Jim Chaney who left to become the offensive coordinator at Tennessee. Coley previously served as offensive coordinator at Miami and Florida State.

Al Golden's OC. Also figurehead OC under Fisher at Clowntown, Fisher was the real play caller.
