Injury retirements at UT

I was reading the Memphis news and ran across this

Tennessee football: Melvin McBride taking a medical retirement

McBride, who signed with Tennessee in December and enrolled in May, is the fifth UT offensive lineman to take a medical disqualification this offseason.

Offensive linemen Devante Brooks, Chance Hall, Tanner Antonutti and Eric Crosby already moved onto medical exemption scholarship.

UT also had linebacker Darrin Kirkland and tight end James Brown retire due to injury.

McBride committed to Tennessee in August 2018. He graduated from Memphis Whitehaven.


Might be trimming dead wood or might be a lot of injuries.

This looks like the same thing as Randy Russell, signed, failed the physical never even practiced?

Yep, this is right out of Saban's playbook. Honestly, if they aren't contributing they need to move on. With a "retirement" they stay on scholarship, they just don't eat up one of the 85 football scholarships. They have the option to transfer out also. Seems like some of these may be legit medical reasons though.

Sounds more like he learned Saban tactics. I think they did sign a couple of decent linemen this year. Maybe not as many as us however.
