Need some help here. In high school, this seems to be the latest thing for the kids. Started a few years back with the e cigarettes, but looks to be elevating/evolving. It is against our policy to have or use them at school and the majority of the kids that get caught and disciplined don't get what the problem is. Quite often their parents feel the same, that we are being too harsh, and will even tell us that they regularly vape as a family. So just how harmless are they?

Toward the end of school in May and during summer school, we've had three cases of some kids vaping some sort of oil that is a very high concentrate nicotine base. Two of the kids couldn't walk unassisted, speech was slurred, and one puked and crapped his pants! The stuff they were using was called "Brain Freeze." Could they have had something else as well? Maybe, but this is what we found on them and what they admitted to using. I shudder to think what might have happened if they tried to drive in the state they were in.

What I'm asking is this: what do you all know about this stuff and how do you feel about it? Seems that as a school administrator, I'm starting to get emails from some vaping groups pushing for "education" rather than punishment (seems I've heard this argument somewhere else) and I'm certain that there needs to be that component, but added and not in lieu of. Anyhow, your opinions and shared knowledge will be a help!

Let darwin do his job. Give the parents a years supply today.
That's kinda the way I see this stuff, too. What I know of it from our school police is that there's so much more crap they can put in these devices to inhale that is beyond the fruit flavored nicotine, some of it dangerous. The two kids I described in the OP were very similar to somebody way over-served at a bar or party the way that they were stumbling around and not able to talk coherently. Now they may be first time users of this concentrated nicotine concoction and if they continue doing it they might develop a certain level of tolerance, but it's worrisome to see kids using this stuff with the sense that it can't hurt you.

I don’t know much about it but it’s gotta be unhealthy inhaling that crap. When you see someone do it, they blow out enough “smoke” to cause a smog alert! Inhaling some oil based substance just doesn’t seem like a good idea.

I work with a global site related to drug use and harm reduction. I've reached out for some 101 information from a large population that uses all kinds of stuff, including vaping. Initial feedback is that you could put anything in the fluids, but it is far and away nicotine products, with a growing offering of THC products (but it still carries that weed smell). There is a lowering of the risks from inhaling burning plant products, but there is still the risk of addiction (same as nicotine in cigs, esp as folks consider this 'safer').

The "Brain Freeze" appears to be a menthol flavor of nicotine product, and the physical effects you've described are very attributable to nicotine vaping, just at much higher than recommended quantities, especially for young smokers.

I'll update as I learn more, but for the most part, it doesn't sound like you have any major health threats on the horizon beyond what you'd experience with kids who in years past would have been smoking too many cigarettes.

Something to watch for is how the kids are sharing it. Here in the north Atl. suburbs the kids are taping them to the bottom of certain desks and other kids know which desk to find them under. The kid will go to the bathroom, vape up and then come back to class, taping back under the desk for the next kid. Minimizes the risk of getting caught with the device.

Pretty much everything is superconcentrated in those.
One of the vap cannisters usually has like 30 doses in it, and in concentrations of many dozens to a few hundred street joints (mex ditch weed) of old. If it was nicotine, it is probably 5-10 packs worth.

Almost all that Ive dealt with are liquid marijuana oil/hash/ or synthetic thc. Like I cant remember one that wasnt. Even the ones you buy in the shady gas stations, from guys named Mo. It is always one of those gas stations that also sell stolen cell phones, counterfeit and maybe fake viagra (RHINO!), and counterfeit hats, shirts, shoes and purses.

There is really no way to know what was in it just bc of the label. It is common for dealers to think for example they have liquid coke but actually have fentanyl. Meth instead of Xanax. Etc. Almost any drugs can be suspended in liquid and vaped.

Nicotine is an upper though. And really high nicotine concentrations could cause those symptoms, too, crapping pants and nausea for sure. Not really the slurred speech though.

People do have strokes with uppers like meth and coke, bc of vasocontriction and rocketing blood pressure, so I guess it could happen with enough nicotine but the effects would be long lasting likely once the vasoconstriction in the brain was bad enough to cause those symptoms.

I seriously doubt it was just nicotine though. More likely that was liquid marijuana.

Thanks Law @Swamp Donkey. Sorta what we've feared. School PD working on test kits for this stuff. Going back to the OP, it really pisses me off to get the propaganda emails from organizations supportive of this stuff that beg for us to provide education to the students and not hold them accountable to the applicable rules. I've had to send one kid to alternative school after he received his 4th vaping infraction. his mother questioned that we were sending him to alternative school just for vaping. I told her yes, that it was clearly laid out in the code of conduct, so he was also being punished for being a dumb ass (he also had a little entrepreneurship with the vapes, nicotine toothpicks, etc. going on too). Just a matter of time before we get some sort of legal threat or challenge or some kid gets hold of something pretty harmful. We'll have a rule named after him/her.

It should field test easily, but many of the fentanyl tests suck or miss carfentanyl.

I would field test those tooth picks too.

Propaganda from legal vaping or marijuana types?

Legal (I think). "VapeEducate" is one source. Of course they have a product to sell to both schools and parents. Don't get me wrong, I definitely think there needs to be some education, but our school (like many) have the vapes and e-cigs in with the tobacco and drug policies. Thus, there are consequences for infractions that begin with In School Suspension (first two infractions), then Out of School Suspension and a behavior contract for a third, followed by referral to alternative school for a fourth. Part of the code of conduct is about learning to follow the rules, which most of us have to do as adults in order to find a modicum of success or peaceful living. The potential dangers of these things, as you mention, could take them from the aforementioned tobacco policy to the drug policy (vaping juice with TCH for example) which is an automatic 10 day Out of School Suspension followed by referral to alternative school. The big impediment we are seeing is that so many of the parents of the kids caught vaping are users themselves and even supply their kids with the stuff.

True, I've heard of it but it seemed to be wave "that was coming" but never arrived here and seemed to dissipate. Maybe still common in Europe, probably due to khat addicts.

Or maybe just enclaves in US.

And to be clear, I was talking about the fill your own vape cannisters

@Swamp Donkey back to this Rhino stuff, you got an address to Mo's store? Asking for a friend.
Go to a bad neighborhood and look for a BP or Shell. Or look for cellphones on craigslist. Youll find him. There are several in every town.

No guarantees on what you get in the fake viagra either.

Funny you mention a Shell station. The one kid that got sent to alternative school for the chronic vaping and selling shared that his goal was to own a Shell station/minute market. Entrepreneurial dreams I guess and Shell is the gateway.

I KNOW THAT BP STATION!!!! It's right next to my gun shop and I go in to use the pisser! The wall on the left is the gun shop... the crack heads live in the trees in the back, and I always say “Hi!” to “Sammi” the cashier from Bangladesh when I use the pisser and buy a courtesy drink for use of said pisser.
