"We believe in the power of the written word. But we also realize people connect differently today."

I ran into David Stirt many times in 1979, the year he launched, after I became a lowly Sun stringer. The dude was energetic and focused. You could tell he was going to be successful. He had a plan. Jack Hairston took him on but he couldn't beat him.

First order for Buddy's team. Correct the typo in the story. It was '79, not '89.

Didn't Newsweek sell for $1?

Hell, anyone, even a bum on a corner, can be a "media mogul".

I arrived at UF in 1980 and subscribed to GatorBait until I went dirt poor for grad school in 2000. I loved it and as I recall Rivals grew out of linking those publications that popped up everywhere. Stirt was a visionary and I hope reaped a lot of financial success for serving us so well.

And I got to know Buddy while living in Belleview (he was in Ocala.) Nice guy, very old school, but like a lot of them lost his “inside sources” when the UAA went all Kremlin under Muschamp. He’s got to be pushing 80 or more.

That old rag was like gold back in the day. They were around for the heady rise of the Pell era, with what was the best information available and a candid "old school" outlook. I particularly relished the recruiting issues and have maintained that interest to this day. I particularly missed Marty Cohen's contribution after his departure, the guy was a Mensch.

When I lived a zillion miles away I looked forward to receiving my issue late in the week and read it cover to cover. Always liked Marty's honesty (for the most part) and Guerry Smith who was living in Louisiana but still writing weekly. Now that I have seen this news I know that I won;t have to ever take a peek. Anything with Buddy Martin just equals SHILL and you won;t ever get anything beyond positive and great even if things are SHYTTY. Never would call Urbs out on any of the garbage that was going on when Urb was here and my guess is Buddy genuflects daily in front of his shrine to Urbs!

I love Buddy for doing this and esp when you consider how much it goes against the grain. He's a dyed in the wool Gator fan, a sentimentalist. I hope it works.

My Grandfather got Gator Bait for years, I loved to read it whenever I visited him. Although, I think Crucial worked for them around the time their numbers started to go down. Coincidence? I think not.

Buddy Martin is just an ancient version of Slevin.
