Probably the best video/data compilation on the first moon landing that I've ever seen. For you guys that enjoy this sort of thing this is a must-watch.

What we need is a good conspiracy theorist to come along and argue that it's all fake.

Well it took it this long for technology to be able to produce a real looking video. :)

Thanks for the video zambo. I heard a few years ago that the computer apollo 11 used had less memory than the newest I phone. I'm not sure if that was accurate or not.

Probably much less.

Well- they did switch to integrated circuits for the Apollo 8 mission to get faster cycles and less real estate. But yes - the computing power in the Apollo guidance system was far less than what we use today:

“AGC was one of the first integrated circuit-based computers. The computer's performance was comparable to the first generation of home computers from the late 1970s, such as the Apple II, TRS-80, and Commodore PET.”

Not a computer guy, but I heard that the concept of “software” wasn’t even invented before the space program. I guess that means that any computer was purpose built for a single task only.

In the video if you watch closely the attitude of the lander you can see how Armstrong controls it to adjust the landing point. The craft is angled back so that it’s descent engines are pointing slightly forward, causing it to decelerate. When he sees that the landing spot is too rough he rotes the craft forward so the thrusters are pointing straight down and the craft basically levels off and continues to coast. Then he sees a good spot and rotates the attitude aft again and the ship slows down. Angling the thrust this way is exactly how you control a Harrier in the hover.

Correct-
The IBM guys created software for their big honkin’ system but by and large, those were the salad days.

Thanks Zambo!

I was five when the landing took place. Don't remember watching the landing in the afternoon, but I was awakened to watch the start of the walk. Sitting in a little folding chair (which I still have) nodding sleepily in front of a black and white console tv with built in record player. Dad was an aerospace engineer who had worked at Canaveral in the early sixties, so it was a big deal to him!

Why even bother? Moon deniers will just point to some other thing they don’t understand and use that to justify their delusional conclusion about the landing being faked. And if you explain away that thing, they’ll just come up with some other thing. It’s like a test for mental retardation.
