Bengals' Jeff Driskel latest QB-turned-WR experiment

For now, quarterback Jeff Driskel has a spot on the Cincinnati Bengals roster. It's just not the one he wants.

Tuesday's practice saw Driskel, a 2016 sixth-round draft pick by the 49ers, take the field playing a position he's never competitively played in his life: wide receiver.

Standing at 6-foot-4 and weighing in at over 230 pounds, Driskel possesses the sort of traits that he and the Bengals coaching staff believe could make him a contributor in more ways than one.

"I'm still competing at quarterback," Driskel said, per The Athletic's Jay Morrison. "That's what I want to be. That's what I think I can be. But I just want to show that I can add value to this team in other ways and show that I want to contribute and can contribute."

The move that should have been made in 2010 when it was immediately obvious he was too stupid to play QB.

I still find it amazing this guy ever made an NFL roster. I give him kudos for sticking around this long.

I don't really mean to knock him, but it's purely genetics. He has the size, build and natural athletic ability that make him just enticing enough for teams to think he could eventually be a good player. Credit to him for playing that card as long as he has, and who knows. He could keep it up, play some mop-up or emergency downs for a couple more years and end up having a really successful NFL career. Stranger things have happened.

Yep. Name the UF quarterback with the longest completion from scrimmage.

That coach that is gone now picked him up due to his physical traits as he has never shown anything to suggest he can even be a decent backup NFL QB. If he was 6"2" he never makes a roster after he was cut in that first camp.

Maybe you're thinking of the most rushing yards by a QB in a single game for the school record? I think he had 171 rushing yards vs Vandy in Nashville.

Just heard a bit of UF vs Mizzou on SEC. The announcers were talking about how UF can't find a QB. Pointed out that Grier, Brissett, and Driskel all had success once they left UF.

Terry LeCount had a 9-year carrier in the NFL as a WR. Beat every other former Gator QB in longevity except Grossman and Spurrier.

He was better as a backup than anyone the jags have had in years. Granted, that is a very low bar when it comes to the backup QB position. He's far better than the trash they have now. Minshew is pure garbage.

I give Driskel credit for making the NFL at any position. But it always irks me that Tebow, one of the best college football players ever, never wanted to give being an all purpose player a try. Don;t get me wrong he had every right to want to try and play QB only or anything else, but first and foremost Tebow was an athlete and a great football player. I am convinced he could have had an excellent 5-10 year career as a football player, but sadly we will never know.
