Schiano to coach Rutgers after all

There's been a lot of speculation that Moorhead may be the leading candidate for the Rutgers job. He actually denied any interest this week. I read that Greg Schiano actually quit the Patriots DC job this off-season (after he accepted the job) because he wanted to be available to take the job when it came open (and everyone knew Ash was going to get fired) - Bilichek didn't want to lose his DC in late Nov/early December if Schiano took the job. Anyhow, now there's a bunch of speculation Moorhead may take the job. IMO, this would be like leaving Wake Forest for Vandy. Would you leave Miss State for Rutgers? (keep in mind, he's from that part of the country). Here's a few stories on it:

Joe Moorhead-to-Rutgers would make lots of sense for both sides

To put it as bluntly as possible: two straight 6-6 seasons at Mississippi State would get Moorhead run off. Two straight 6-6 seasons at Rutgers would get Moorhead a contract extension, and maybe a statue.

Bruce Feldman of The Athletic and New Jersey Advance Media are each reporting that Moorhead is among several coaches the Scarlet Knights will look at in their search. Others include Buffalo coach Lance Leipold, Pittsburgh coach Pat Narduzzi and Princeton coach Bob Surace, with Greg Schiano, a former Rutgers coach, who recently worked with the New England Patriots and was the Ohio State defensive coordinator, thought to be the prime candidate.

There’s no way I’d go to Rutgers. Mississippi > Lousiana >New Jersey. If nothing else, the people are much better. Plus, MSU at least has some potential. Rutgers should not even be P5.

The only way Rutgers is getting Moorhead is if they start doing more around the house. Even then I can't guarantee it. My advice is to start by doing the dishes, vacuuming, picking your dirty socks up off the floor. Then give a foot massage. If that doesn't work, I can't help you.

Wrong. Rutgers should just stay out late a couple times and act indifferent.

Hell yes you should go coach the Rutgers. Starkville is probably one of the worst cities in the United States.

You ever been to New Brunswick? The only thing that makes it occasionally look better is when it gets covered with snow. On another note, would that be considered a "lateral move?" Asking for a friend.

Moorhead is from that part of the country, it's home, so that's probably not an issue for him. I think the biggest issue is: can he last at Miss State? He can stay, and possibly get fired in 2 years...or go to Rutgers and keep his job 4, 5 or more years (and if he has any sort of success he'd get hired away by a bigger school). IMO, he should take the Rutgers job. But I think it's going to Schiano.

Parts of NJ are beautiful, but not the area near Rutgers. I’d usually agree that virtually any job is better than MSU, especially given the division they have to contend in. But Rutgers may be the exception. Just as hard to recruit due to standards and historically being garbage, plus you trade Ala/LSU/Aub for OhSt/Mich/Psu. It may be the most lateral move ever, before even factoring in the weather.

I’d look for a ticket out. I just wouldn’t take that one. Besides, the upgrade that he is, I doubt MSU would let him slip through their fingers like that.

Right now Rutgers is an awful job and probably always will be. MSU is not a great job and never has been. But coaching D-1 football in a P5 conference with its own TV network regardless of school is a good job. So I don;t think it is a huge step down to go from MSU to Rutgers, especially if the money is the same, which I am sure it will be. He is from the area and sees the angst of the fans of not winning weekly in the SEC.. heck Holgerson went from a P5 school to a non P5 school. Why? For money. Rutgers is in the Big 10 so the money is there. I don;t think this move would be a big deal. Again if money is same, winning 6 at MSU gets you fired and winning 6 at Rutgers has a line of people genuflecting to pleasure you!

Think of the backdrop in any episode of "The Sopranos." (Except, to be fair, the opening credits - that was a little further north.)

Saddle River, I may be in. But he's not living that far away.

If he makes this move, it tells me he must be feeling the heat. This would just be conceding defeat and kicking the can, giving himself a fresh 3-4 years before he's fired.

Starkville may be a pit but the entire state of New Jersey looks like the slum backdrops that scroll past the Mystery Machine during Scooby Doo chase scenes.

For sure there are parts of jersey that are like that. There’s a lot of beautiful parts of jersey as well. There’s a reason it’s called the garden state.

He probably won't be at MSU long so it might make sense to leave now.

This is my take on this too.

I think the better way to ask this is....Do you think Joe Moorhead is feeling enough heat at MSU to consider leaving now before he gets fired in 2 years?
If you have paid attention to MSU you will appreciate the magic that Mullen performed while there. The talent has already started to diminish and Moorhead seems to be the typical guy that has never been a head coach at this level.
The goobers in Starkville told themselves it would be better this year since Moorhead has his guy from Ped State at QB. To say that he has been a bust would be very fair.

Rutgers is a pretty crappy job but it may be better than the one he no longer has in 2021.

Exactly.

I am no fan of New Jersey but there are parts such as Park Ridge that are absolutely beautiful.

Conversely, places like Newark and Camden are sh!tholes but don't judge the entire state by these cities.

There's a reason Mullen is the winningest coach at MSU since the 1940s. It is a dead end job with an athletic department that thinks they are better than they are. No such expectations at Rutgers.
