If we play at least thirteen games we could possibly match the past four years totals THIS SEASON

Sounds great until you realize it’s only due to our inability to run against anyone we’ve played to date...including 2 HS teams, UK and UT.

As much as i would like a more balanced attack, well, a competent running game. after the past decade of chumpball then that dude with his offensive guru card, i am enjoying the hell out of seeing the ball being thrown all over the field. And i mean all over the field, we've probably seen more passes already this year in the middle of the field than the past 8 combined. I for one , am loving it, throw it more!!

With the defense progressing each game, we win by passing at the moment, the offensive line is s l o w l y getting it together, they'll peak just in time for Atlanta.

Besides we supposedly have one of the deepest WR group in the nation, if we ran the ball more there would a certain crowd that would complain that we aren't using our best talent, only for blocking... ;) so, we have them, let's use them. If our best matchup is our WR against the other teams DB's , we need to run with it, wait my bad, we need to pass with it :)

Uhhh huh. let's see.

Well 2008, which was a pretty good offense:

Hawaii: 151
Miami: 256
UT: 96
Ole Miss: 319
Arkanasas: 236
LSU: 241
UK: 232
Ugly: 188
Vandy: 191
USCe: 173
Citadel: 311
Five&SevenU: 185
Bama: 216
OU: 231

Couldn't find box scores on the 1996 team. I'd suspect it was a bunch though. Total passing yards/games gives an average of 308.23 per game. Not too shabby - but also a very different era.

I realize that this post turned out really long, but there's something I just don't get.

Unless you're Georgia Tech or Army, your yards per attempt passing is always much greater than yards per attempt on the ground. Even a good running game will have a lower yards per attempt.

Admittedly no research done on this, but I would bet the yards-per-attempt in the air under Trask is probably around 9, and on the ground maybe a bit over 4, skewed by the Perine run. Whatever the actual numbers, passing average is probably at least double that of rushing.

if I'm sitting in a casino and I've got two slot machines side by side, and one of those consistently has a payout of about twice the other, what stops me from pulling the lever on the one with the better payout almost every time?

Granted, the variability in returns out of the passing game is much greater. Maybe a standard deviation of 2 or 2.5 yards per attempt versus a SD of maybe 1 on the ground. That would mean even a passing game underperforming to your averages would generally outgain your average or slightly over-performing ground game.

Obviously the two are not independent of each other like my slot machine example, but as a defense adjusts to the passing game, the ypa will go down but presumably with some additional opportunities to improve the runs.

Taking that to my slot machines... What if productivity on one slot machine affected the other? Would you continue to pump quarters into the low-performing slot machine attempting to balance the outputs, or the other way around?

In other words, why would any team not running the wishbone ever want to throw it less than 70% of the time?

Woody Hayes.

No one pulls just the passing slot machine. Even SOS ran draw plays once they started playing a dime defense.

Tebow's 482 yards passing in the Sugar Bowl seems like an entire season of its own.

Exactly, and they often worked, because the entire student body was in the defensive backfield defending the pass. But the question remains... since the YPA is 2x higher through the air, why aren't at least twice as many passes called as runs? Why aren't passes called almost exclusively until the YPA gap is closed?

We haven't had a passing attack with any kind of high yards per game total since Zook left. It hasn't been our MO, even when Tebow was here.

Im thinking a lot of people who "remember" the CUM and Mullinz offense don't actually remember the CUM/Mullinz offense.
