In a time when 8-2 might be considered disappointing, it was good to see the Gators dismantle Vanderbilt 56-0 at BHG. In times past, the Commodores had been known to play us tough, maybe even catching us looking past them. Not today. Vandy was softer than they have been. And we don't have anything to look past them for. At least in terms of big goals that we can control. So it was good to see us take care of business, even if we did sputter some at the beginning.

Among the stories of this Saturday in Gainesville, the defense pitching a shutout had to be at the top after a couple of stinkers in our two biggest conference games. Even though the competition wasn't comparable, the fact that we played with some purpose and enthusiasm was welcome. "Dr. Pressure" was living up to his nick and guys like Diabate, Greenard, Reese, Davis, et al were turning in stellar performances. At one point, on Vandy's lone scoring threat, they had 60+ yards on that drive and only 12 on their prior possessions combined. We didn't allow them to run it on us and between the pressure and the coverage, they couldn't throw it either. A complete defensive performance. Only problem...it was against Vandy and that a collective loss of give-a-sh!t after conference aspirations was dashed probably dampened the enjoyment for many. Not me, however. Being a firm believer in making sure that you get back up after being knocked down, there's always something to cheer about in every win. There's always something to be gained.

Offensively, the story was one we've enjoyed before...just about every one of our great corps of receivers either was targeted or ran the ball. One of the announcers pointed out how the fact that they all contribute to the offense had to be appealing to the receivers we were recruiting, knowing that they'd see the field and get balls thrown their way. Pitts continues to be a primary threat and it was pointed out that he and Trask worked a lot together leading up to this season. Their chemistry is pretty evident. Grimes' catch and run was a thing of beauty and it was good to see Cleveland make some plays. Kinda seemed like he was a little overshadowed, but maybe it was because of how well we are distributing the ball. No doubt, this group has to be among the deepest we've ever had and ranks right up there with the best in cfb. The running game is still pretty meh, but too many other things went right, so the moaning and wringing of hands maybe got a little break.

Missouri, our next (and last) conference foe, fell to the Dawgs. They looked pretty impotent offensively, though they were without their starting QB, but they had some moments defensively as they held UGA to a bunch of FG attempts before ultimately falling. The fact that they've been a thorn in our flesh of late should be enough to get us up for them even though a win won't put us in the SECCG (there's always something to play for). At this point we're building for the future as best we can and it's still important to enter the regular season finale with the Nole$, who won their first post-Taggart game today, on a bit of a rise.

Here are a couple of more items from today's game:

*Trask looked pretty mortal at times today. His picks didn't resemble the QB he looked to be becoming and a few of his passes, even a couple that were caught, didn't look quite as precise. His first two series were forgettable, but he settled in and played better thereafter. It's good he's created high expectations from us fans. Better still he was able to help lead us to a win when he was not at his best.

*The OL didn't look any worse with a new face at RG. They weren't great by any means, but they had to be doing something right for the offense to have been as productive as it was. We had a little more success on the ground (e.g. EJ rushing for three scores) so maybe it was some better, despite some rushes that got blown up, even if it was against Vandy. Better than getting overwhelmed I guess.

*Watching the game with c2Jr, we both thought that the flanker screens, jet sweeps, etc. were successful. We also wondered why they weren't a bigger part of the offense last week.

*Grantham's plan looked good against the Commodores, better than it did against the Tigers and the Dawgs. Plan, players, or both? I'll pick "C."

*The backs figured into the passing game today. Even though it looked improv-ish, the toss/push to Perine was nice and Pierce had two nice catch and runs for first downs. At this juncture, I'm still looking for Pierce to get more touches.

*I'd like to think we could put 20-25 more pounds on Diabate and retain his speed and quickness. He had a whale of a game and it's always good to see a young guy step up.

*If Stewart was the only significant injury (and I haven't heard for sure), then we should be pretty healthy next week. What about Zuniga?

*It's still a loss, but LSU's big win over Bama makes me feel a little better about our effort against them. Not pandering for a moral victory by any means, but the Tigers look to be the real McCoy. They're where we want to be (and their defense might not be quite as bad as I've heard proclaimed - they've got some guys that can play on that side of the ball and even though they might not be beautiful statistically, they have held all the teams they've played below what their offense has scored).

"You can't always get what you want, but if you try sometime...you just might find...you get what you need!" What we need, at this point, is to win out and maintain both relevance and the impression that we are on the rise, if not sky rocketing. Mick must've had us Gators in mind. Onward to Mizzou and a chance for another forward step. Until then, I'll leave you with this thought about patience...my granddaddy told me that he knew I'd have a lot of patience when I grew up because I didn't use a damn bit of it when I was young. He knew I bled Orange and Blue ;)

Go Gators!

Great as usual. Pierce has to be more involved going forward. Perine did some nice things but still had some head scratchers. On that fourth down play, he didn’t get separation because his head was toward the back field the whole time. LB stuck to him and stuck his hands up as he followed Perine’s eyes. Oh well.

Another thing I liked seeing was the youth movement, particularly on defense. Lots of new faces out their contributing early. Good to see.

Great summary Cover, thanks!

You're correct, we are on the rise. For some, however, it's just so damn easy to forget how far we've come in such a short time! (and it was a looooong way back just to get to where we are now)

Precise thoughts Cover. I liked seeing some of the youth yesterday on the field. Diabate was a pleasure to watch. Now Savage needs to get ahold of him and beef him up. Also good to see the OL with some youth on there even if it was for an injury. Played no worse, so hence why not let them get some OJT. Solid win against an inferior opponent and we should have done exactly what we did. Just glad they accomplished it rather than crapping the bed which could have easily happened with MacSharkelwain. Yes on to Mizzou and hope they carry a bit of a chip on their shoulder.

Perfect summary, as always.

I took my son to the game and this was the first time I’ve caught the Gator Walk since the new regime took over. The two players that stood out to me the most were Krull and Ethan White. White looks like he could be Andre the Giant’s son. He is humongous. Krull is no slouch, either. The tv doesn’t do him justice, he’s a large human being.

As we were heading to the stadium, my son says to me “Hey Dad, isn’t that Feleipe Franks?” I looked over by the O-Dome where he was pointing, and there he was, with a group of about 3 or 4 people taking pictures with him and talking to him. We walked over and he was gracious enough to take a picture with my son. I wished him well, and told him we were glad to see him back on his feet. Nice enough kid. Someone else asked him if he was coming back to UF and his response was “Uhhmmm, I’m not sure yet.” That tells me he’s probably gone.

Hopefully Kelly is out next week. I enjoyed the Vandy game so much, I failed to get into uniform or get online.

It was definitely nice to see our Gators do to teams like Vandy what they used to, and that is complete and total annihilation. It was obvious Vandy didn't even belong on the same field.

Saying that, the biggest problem all year is this Gator team cannot run the ball. Hell, we couldn't run the ball in THIS game - Trask was the leading rusher for most of the day. That is pathetic beyond words. This is the worst run-blocking OL the Gators may have EVER put out in their 100+ year history.

He looked pretty good though we seemed to mostly bltiz him and he didnt have much heavy lifting.

I am surprised HOW good he looked though maybe I shouldn't be given that he stood out in the All-Star games last year.

I don't know whether we're going to keep him on the edge/blitzer or whether we're going to try to develop him into an inside backer. Lord knows we need someone inside but converting safeties and edges hasn't work much for us lately.

he could well be THAT GUY next year. He seems like a big step up from Moon (nice kid, not particularly good) already.

The run game did continue to sputter but I thought Pierce provided a nice spark when he came in. He even had a couple if nice pass catches with some YAC.

So is Perine done?

This is the kind of game UF should have had (and used to have) 300 yards rushing.

I'll take 360 yards passing over 300 yards rushing any day.

You didn't answer the question. What do you do with Perine?
I'll "take" the passing but we'll never reach any of our goals if we can't run the ball at all.

Perine can back up Pierce.

C2 . Nice job.
Heard this morning that the win was our biggest shut out over a conference opponent since the HBC put 65 on the "MildCats" in 96. Now it was Vandy with their 3rd and 4th level QB's. But after the disappointing performance last week we needed this one. Let's see if we can carry it over to a much tougher game next week. Even though we had injuries on D ,it was good to see the coaches play some young guys who probably should have seen more playing time before this game. Let's get these kids ready to play and see what they can do. Was great to see Greenard rumble with that big cookie that Diabate left for him.

I share this feeling. Lack of this dimension was a giant factor in our losses this year. Any time a better team only has to worry about one aspect of your offense, the odds are greatly in their favor. Heck, it makes it easier for the lesser teams to prepare for and compete with you. An argument can be made that if you take away flukish long runs by Perine against Auburn and Pierce against USCe, those outcomes could have been different. We won't realistically compete for any championships until this is rectified.

Moon is a good kid by all accounts and you can tell he is giving maximum effort. Problem is, he just looks completely lost on most plays. Diabate didn’t ever look out of position yesterday. Granted, it was Vandy and they’re awful, but we had plenty of guys out of position against teams like Towson and UT on some plays.

Our O-LINE is as bad as I predicted. They are not opening holes, but more of this is on Trask than we realize. He is a truly bad runner, and that is important in this offense. Other teams hardly bother to account for him.

Whehhhhhh.... we have been blaming everyone but the playcaller for lack of RB running game since 2005.

rough numbers bc Im not breaking out a calculator

2005: Wynn 621 Manson 365 Moore 277
2006 Wynn 699 Moore 282 Williams 101
2007 Moore 580 James 133
2008 Rainey 673 Demps 605 Moore 142

Did those lines suck too?

Great analysis of the game, Cover. I agree with every point you made. We must figure out a way to run the ball, and I think the only way we can make that happen is if we place the focus on that aspect of the offense squarely on the back of Pierce. Perine just can't get it done. And I'm with you when looking backwards at our two losses... it seems as if we were capable, but a lot of triggers were left un-pulled in those games. Head scratching, to say the least. Diabate is someone that gives me great hope going forward, and I hope we've got a few more gems on the depth chart that will shine bright in the near future.

All in all, it was a great win. It was good to see us shake off the funk of last week, and put our foot on the throat of a lesser opponent. We used to be one of the best programs to do that, but haven't really done it consistently as of late. Hopefully we can do it with even greater effect in our remaining games.

Go Gators
