What do you consider an "expensive" dinner?

How many of you prefer fine seafood vs. a fine steak (i.e. expensive restaurant)? I'm not a huge steak person, I like it, but I honestly enjoy a good cheeseburger just as much. I love a good Florida lobster (warm water lobster), and prefer that to a good steak.

For Veteran's Day, Fogo de Chao had a 50% off deal for veterans. Me and some buddies went. Really, really good. But i just couldn't imagine paying full price for that.

I, too, love a good cheeseburger. I’m pretty easy to please. I also love good seafood. Lobster and/or crab (Maine lobster, Alaskan king crab legs or stone crab claws) are at the top of my list. The problem I have is access to high quality seafood in Atlanta is limited and even when I am close to the ocean the prices are even higher than the price of a really good steak. Atlanta prices are even worse.

As far as Fogo, that place is amazing! My biggest gripe is the salad bar is kick azz, too, but I never want to eat it because I save all my appetite for the meat. One day I’m going to hit Fogo at lunch and do the salad bar only just to try it.

Courtesy tip for anybody passing through Atlanta looking for good seafood. There is a place about a mile from the airport off Virginia Ave. called Spondivits. It’s a little hole in the wall. They have some really good seafood (including fresh shucked oysters if that’s your thing). If you have a long layover or are in town and want to grab lunch before flying back out, give it a try. It’s really good (but not cheap).

I’m very cheap with my money. We had the girls here for the holidays and spent over $200 twice for 4 of us, and that is a rarity. Both meals were worth it.

When I am doing business dinners, I’m ok with $100/head because there is usually plenty of drinks. Most I did was about $250/head because the wine was flowing.

when it’s the wife and I, I get pissed if the bill is over $75 (which in Denver seems to be every damn meal).

Just noticed this thread. Nice to see I’m not alone in some of my views. Personally, I don’t eat out very often. Like Brad and others mentioned, the mid level restaurants are the biggest waste on the planet. They’re simply not good, terrible for you health wise, and still expensive. I have always brought my lunch from home for similar reasons and for time efficiency which was critical when I was trading. My wife and I cook basically 7 days a week and rarely eat out(like once a month), so when I do, I don’t have a budget.

I agree completely with Concrete that there are some definite overpriced items and things that are just trendy. I’m not a foie gras guy, though I’ve had it and it’s not terrible, and I’ll never drop the money for caviar because I just genuinely don’t enjoy it.

That said, I celebrated my 10 year anniversary at Del Posto in NY, and have no issue dropping money if it’s actually worth it. If not, I’m like FireFoley in thinking it’s a waste.

On the business side, I once was doing a small PE deal for a company whose CEO was trying to get me away from his head of marketing because he had a crush on her. Long and short, he sent me to DC for a road show like 3 days earlier than I needed to be. So I stuck it to him by racking up the largest(aside from Del Posto) bill I’ve ever run up at the Bobby Vans near the hotel. Cant even remember all that I ordered, but it was a lot of fun. And I still got the girl.
