I don't think we have to assume Nix can quick kick. I believe he already did it in the game. The box score has him with 1 punt for 42 yards

And Alabama had a returner back before the extra dlineman ran in. He's going to directional kick it to avoid the return, because you have your punter as a gunner? The whole reason a quick kick works is that you have no returner back. You guys are nuts. The whole point is any one of those outcomes indicates a pretty bold call.

Barrel roll? Ok.

Explain why burning your last timeout with the lead and a minute left is so terrible.

Well, in a word - experience.

The offense is coming out in a hurry up. Their offensive hits an intermediate play over the middle and then rushes to the line in a formation you've seen them run before but with personnel in different spots. You realize that it has created a terrible mismatch and the game can turn on this play. If you've got a time out, you can stop it and ruin that wrinkle. With no timeout you maybe watch that top WR lined up where you've seen them put the TE on film split your safeties and put them up by 4 with 39 seconds left for you with no timeouts; because you decided to go for the ruse to win the game rather than going the conventional route and holding on to your best means of stopping their hurry up if it they hit a couple of quick plays on you.

Good lord, just stop digging. It was just a good play but it wasn't a gamble. They could have taken a timeout. They could have simply taken the penalty and backed up 5 yards. They could have shifted position and punted. They could have quick kicked. You make it sound like if the formation didn't work they've just given some big advantage to Bama. They didn't draw the play up in the dirt while the shot clock was running, it was something they had dialed up and they executed it. Jesus tapdancing Christ......

No, they couldn't have shifted position. You have long snappers for a reason. It is a different skill and you aren't just going to have your center wing it. They could have quick kicked - to a returner with your punter at gunner? Let's go full retard. The call was to trick them, or use a timeout or take a yardage penalty and put them potentially closer to the tying field goal. And if you did that, with the season you've had as a coach and it backfires, you're probably out of a job.

There's no digging - the above was a true story - I lived it with the play sheet in my hand. Wished I had the timeout to call because I saw what was about to happen. In my case it was lining up the guys up in a field goal formation that I knew was a bit outside my kids range and trying to slip the WR to wide side having him pretend to run off. It didn't fool them. I took the timeout to save the yardage to go for a more conventional call on 4th and 8 in a tie game. We didn't connect. They caught one over the middle and did exactly what I described above.

That's a big assumption. Let's assume Nix can quick kick -

How many reps do you think he's gotten doing that at practice? You're going have you QB quick kick backed up in your own territory if your ruse doesn't work, and you don't think that's gutsy? I bet your passengers love it when you barrel roll.

As for shifting into a punt formation. Special teams don't really work that way. With the game on the line you are not going to shift into a punt formation with guys (including the QB) who have not been practicing with the special teams all year. You are going to have your regular center long snap to the punter - and this is also not a gutsy move?

To be clear, I think this was a ruse and the fall back was burning your last timeout. Which I still think is a ballsy move. Either scenario above is nuts.
@Zambo is correct. They were already shifting the two - Nix was headed to be the gunner while the punter went to the back. Nix started pointing out 12 men as he was running to gunner.

Yeah Bama with all those top recruits and lose 2 games. Also blown out in the NC game last year. Has Saban lost his touch?

LOL. Okay dude. So instead of a punter as a gunner, your QB who does tackling drills all the time.

You mean they aren't celebrating a 2 loss season and finishing 2rd in the division?

:pe: won't like this.

I'm willing to bet he's got as many reps or more doing quick kicks as the team has practiced this 'fuk w bama' lineup arrangement.
