So I’m sitting here in my beautiful BMW 550i M waiting for a tow truck and reevaluating my life choices. I should have known better but I always wanted a BMW so I figured what the hell. Kinda like having Sapphire move in with you. Every man should date a dancer at least once so that they know never to do it again. Same apples to owning a used BMW.
For all their complex German engineering they just aren’t meant to last longer than the 3 year lease. It’s the tranny this time. Which I’m guessing is going to be about 4 grand. I’m also trying to stay ahead of an inevitable valve job that’s about 3 grand. And a common water leak that usually runs about 2 grand.

Might be a good time to sell.

$4700 and it has to ship form Germany 2-3 weeks. That's for the mechatronic unit which is a bunch of solenoids and electronics that control the tranny.
I have some decisions to make.

Maybe I read that too fast, but am I right that you’re regretting hooking up with a beautiful stripper named Sapphire who turned out to be a tranny and she (he) ripped you off for 3 grand? I’m not sure what you’re confused about. I am surprised you told us about it though.

I feel bad for ya Buddy and know what it's like. We had similar issues with both of our Mercedes about 4 or 5 years ago. I still love the look and feel of those expensive German cars but in reality once they are even several years old they can become a nightmare.....

It’s not as much to never buy a used BMW as to never buy a used BMW without an after-market service plan or pre-certified by the factory.

Ouch.

BTW, I’m going to guess the 550M is somewhere between a 550 and an M5. Nice car.

Any experience if these after market or certified plans are any good? I've always been leery about them and some of the fine print stuff....

No, it's never buy a used BMW.

Corollary: never buy a new BMW either.

A friend at work just did that. The salesman convinced her it was a better SUV than the Lexus. :lmao2:

You couldn’t pay me to own a Lexus SUV with that ugly hourglass grill.

I’ve had three or four with mixed results. First of all, you want to be sure the company is solvent. I had a plan on a three-year-old 911, the same car that suffered a cracked block 3,000 miles before the factory warranty ran out (25k replacement cost dodged). When I went to file my first claim, I was greeted to an automated outgoing message about the company being insolvent. Ugh.

My R8 is covered under a Carchex plan. All claims are outsourced through Royal, who also handles Fidelity. I had a hood latch replaced, no issue. The magnetic ride struts, as they are known to do, showed signs of fluid seepage this past spring. The Audi Clearwater service manager said they should be replaced. Royal said, fine, show us the manufacturer specs on strut failure. The SM: There are none. It’s the service manager’s call. Royal denied it.

My contract is good until November 2021. I’ll keep filing the strut claim until it’s accepted, next time through Audi Tampa. The damn things are 6.5k for all four. I need new tires. I don’t want to put new tires on a car that needs struts.

Good to know....I should know better but I'm considering offing the Shelby to get my Wife an M4 Cab Comp series(maybe 2 or 3 years old)….We have more Grand kids on the way and the GT's back seats are too small even with the top down to get kids in and out....she won't be seen driving a 4 door...lol....

Well I'm definitely getting rid of the bimmer.
So now I have to decide what the hell to buy. There's really nothing out there that I really want. I can't even narrow it down.
