Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker - Honestly probably deserves it's own thread as the only other series that comes close to this is the Marvel movies and really those were just for the last two Avengers.

Letting it sink in a little, but my first overall reaction is that it was good, but not the great we were hoping for. Of all the movies to run longer this should have gone closer to 3 hours so it wasn't as rushed as it was do to them having to fix all the crap the last one created. Some surprises, but not really that much and the reveal and ending left a little to be desired on surface until you really think about it and how it fixes another glaring problem with this trilogy, but that moment could have been so much more and reminded me to much of the ending of another series. There were a few nice easter eggs to things all the way back to episode 4 with someone finally getting a recognition they deserved and some of the characters from the OT were in a perfect spot when they showed up. That being said it is spoiler territory so better to talk about after everyone has had a chance to see it.

On first viewing it's a 7.5/10. As always with things it could go up or down on next viewing, but man I wish they could have slow down to let some things develop better.

Planning to have movie night this Sunday to watch 6 Underground. Heard it was like Mission Impossible meets Deadpool. Everyone I know who has seen it liked it.

I want to watch it too... first time I heard about it, I thought they meant the song by Sneaker Pimps from the movie The Saint.

Just watched Peanut Butter Falcon and it was very good!

It stared Shia LaBeouf and Dakota Johnson.

It goes a little something like this...after running away from a residential nursing home to pursue his dream of becoming a pro wrestler, a man who has Down syndrome befriends an outlaw who becomes his coach and ally.

Watched it the other night and liked it

So does it get any better than that idiotic car chase to start the movie? I like me some Ryan Reynolds and that French actress from Inglorious Basterds is very hot, but I surfed away from this during that insufferable opening car chase with a guy sliding down rooftops. Sheesh.

Scorsese's recent petty shots at today's movie making (Marvel in particular) were initially off-putting, but the opening of this flick has me reconsidering a bit...

So do I nut up with this and try again, or should I move on and await Deadpool 3?

It does but it’s not up for any awards. It starts jumping around a lot to show back stories as well. I watched it at 2 am while feeding a newborn so it could very well be not as good as remembered. Just remember it’s a Michael Bay movie so expectations should be low.

It was good but don’t get this best picture talk unless it’s a slow year. Not as good as Goodfellas but Pesci was fantastic. Wife read the book so was a little disappointed. Watching Deniro trying to fight with the 80 year old body, but 40 year old face was weird. I’m curious to see how this gets pushed in awards season as Martin has previously been part of the group that didn’t think Netflix should count.

Totally agree with you. But, I started the movie not knowing the cast. LaPoof came into his first scene and it took a while before I recognized him. At this point, I was "in" the movie and overlooked him being LaPoof. FWIW, he did a fantastic job with his role.

Like I said, it was a good movie.

Watched it last night. I'm with you, I didn't think the opening car chase was all that great except for a few scenes like the grenade hitting that driver in the nose and such.

The middle of the movie with all the flash forward, flash back, flash sideways was kinda hard to follow but I never really spent much time figuring it out. Its just a blast-fest.

The final fight on the yacht was hysterical IMO. My wife came in and sat down a little before this scene started and was like "watcha watchin?" I said, "Oh, its kinda like mission impossible." So she sat down to watch the end and that was a big mistake on her part. I literally laughed out loud about ten times and she howled many times with a strange mixture of disgust, amazement, anger, surprise and finally happiness when the team prevailed. There were a couple minutes there from about the time one of the bad guys eats a grenade and his whole head blows up until another bad guy gets smashed in the face and all his teeth come flying out in slow motion that were pure cinematic bliss!

The biggest thing I noticed was the high def look of everything, and the camera angles and such sometimes had the feel like the whole thing was shot on someone's iphone. I guess the other thing that is somehow different about this movie is that they show a lot more of the actual carnage involved in one of these crazy chases, such as pedestrians getting mowed down, bodies flying out of wrecked cars, etc. The whole thing is obviously supposed to be ridiculously over the top and it was, although I think watching 2 hours of it was a little exhausting.

Star Wars: Rise of Skywalker

Opening 20min felt like I was reading a book = read a few pages, flip a few chapters, read a few pages, flip a few chapters. Kinda choppy like it was where they cut a bunch a stuff out and hoped you'd keep up with the storyline. After that, things settled in fine. Didn't feel too long or too short. I liked all the references and cameos, but I think I caught a lot more homage moments than most people (and I don't consider myself a Star Wars junkie). If pressed for a summary, I'd say 'solid'. They could have wasted a bunch of more time on other characters, side stories, etc; but instead it seemed to stick pretty well to the KyloRen-Rey connection and their roles in the universe overall. I'm glad they didn't go elsewhere with characters or stories, but can see how some felt it was missing some key closure points. I was told in advance it wasn't pushing a social agenda (it wasn't, I saw maybe one lesbian kiss and that's as close as anything got to a social commentary) and that there were a few moments that were into the cheese but understandable (I never felt it got too cheesy, but I'll watch nearly anything). I call it 'solid' rather than 'satisfying' because I know everyone will leave with a regret, but all in all I think it very well addressed closure on the series as a whole without going to far in any one direction. 8.5 because any attempt at a 10 would have missed more of the audience.

Knives Out

I've been yearning for some sort of thinking movie, a quick dialogue whodunnit kinda thing and thought this may fit the bill. It did, kinda. I'll try not to put in spoilers, but as others told me - everything is put out there in front of you, you can see it if you look. BUT, I was looking, and didn't quite see it coming. All that to say = good premise, storyline, and execution of the acting and direction. Now, some other aspects, such as acting. The main character reminded me of a young Penelope Cruz, and she drew you in and got you invested in her view of things. Watching Daniel Craig with a southern accent was perhaps the most off putting aspect of the whole film. I understand he is trying to break away from his James Bond cast type, and this gives him a chance to spread his wings a bit - I'll be honest I loved him as Bond, and have appreciated him in other roles, but this was tough to watch. The inspector/investigator aspect of his role he pulled off perfectly. It was the accent which had no real place in the film nor reason to exist (other than to hide his British accent). Annoying, but we can move past that. Several other stars in the cast - Jamie Lee Curtis shows her age (losing the good looks, but hey, she's old!) and still carrying the role of oldest surviving daughter very well; Don Johnson as her husband and all around ******* (delightful during several scenes, most notably when dinner conversation turns to politics); Chris Evans as their son (I have loved him in many movies, and struggled with why he wasn't a larger role...until his part developed half way through, and then loved his delivery as well). There were other notable actors, all did their part without issues (other than maybe the cops seeming a bit more fumbling than needed). All in all, great cast as advertised. As to a quick dialogue with word play and intellectual innuendos...none. Pretty straight forward communication by all involved. The twist at the end isn't all too surprising, though there is an out that exists which nobody really mentions or addresses. I will say the unfolding of the twist at the end is a bit fast paced and could be a little tough for some to keep up with but most should have no trouble. I'm still yearning for a good whodunnit with quick dialogue, but this was time well spent. 8.5/10

Regarding Knives Out, I thought it was fantastic, but I guess I’m easier to please. I think Airplane and Happy Gilmore are intelligent, highbrow comedies.

The StepBrothers and Old School must be high on your list as well.
I actually don't like the comedies that are extremely awkward, which is almost all of the Will Ferrell movies, except Elf, which is awesome and a family Christmas Eve tradition.
