If you knew what 2 years into Mullen would be, would you have taken it?

Bullseye...
I like the guy. He's pretty well spoken and doesn't come off like a jackass or weirdo like the 2 idiots before him. His offense is functional, he's a decent playcaller and even adapts his system to work for the players he has on hand(lack of talent or injuries)pretty well. Those are the good points.
Some of the not so good is the other stuff we've beaten half to death, recruiting, hiring and such...The other thing that bothers me is the way he coaches in the UGA game....My God him and Kirby remind me of Woody and Bo feeling each other out for the better part of 3&1/2 quarters before they start trying to score.....:headslap:We literally seem to put everything in the playbook that has been working out into left field whenever we play them.
Bottom line is he's a good coach but winning 10 games ain't what it used to be....UT, FSU and the East outside of UGA is pretty pathetic....and I'm still nauseated about almost losing to UvaJJ the other night....but time will tell soon enough.

Been a long day, I'm tired and the arguments are becoming tedious, time to watch a funny movie.

Check your firearms at the door Gators!

Its great banter back and forth. A lot of great perspectives for sure. All great Gators here and one big happy GC family.

Georgia always out-recruited Spurrier but Spurrier always out-coached them.
Fantasy. SOS had several top classes. There were certainly years when we were #3 and they were #1 or what ever but we sure as fvkk never finished 6th-8th in the GD SEC.

Im very embarrassed by losing to Ugly twice. And Mizzu. And Kintucky.

And Im embarrassed that you and all other Gators aren't also.
We are now much better than the Kentucky and Missouri losses...completely different. Never saw that with Chump and especially Butters. I don’t see us losing again to either of those teams or similar caliber teams.

I am with Traz, Mullen needs to adjust his role to the next level to be a great coach.

With that said, Mullen has exceeded my expectations on exciting offense and maybe a little on the speed of the program turnaround. I was thinking it would be year 3 where we are now.

Beating UGA next year is crucial. Smart does not have it, and if he fails to beat them then he may need to leave sooner than after 5-6 years.

That's the moving target I'm thinking of also....getting a 8 or 10th ranked recruiting class these days isn't what it used to be even 10 years ago because everyone else in the region(conference plus Clemson) is doing just as well and better....Years ago the top 10 classes were spread out nationally, ND, USC, OU, NEB and such were usually higher than they are now on average.
UGA NEVER and I mean ever had top to bottom better talent than SOS....maybe a few positions here and there but as a whole team we were NEVER inferior to UGA during his tenure...he also never went into Turtle mode offensively when playing against them....we never deviated from the stuff that was working up to that game and in fact with a bye week we honed it to a fine point and shoved it up their asses.....

I have no data to provide, but SOS made comments indicating the media believed uga was recruiting superior talent every year. Roughly paraphrased, "they get all this talent in Feb and then after we beat them in Oct it's because they need to recruit better."

Recruiting rankings were even less accurate back then, but the HBC earned the nickname "evil genius" because he outcoached the entire league. Fat phil was also a fantastic recruiter, but got routinely thumped by SOS. I find it amazing the dumpers on here who think SOS won based on recruiting. He recruited well, but he was a superior coach. Period. Minimizing the special talents of UF's Favorite Son is embarrassing.

Who's minimizing his talents? I already said he was a great gameday coach....but being a great recruiter doesn't minimize one coaching ability...In fact the only chinks in his armor was he let FSUX and UM get a few top guys that may have brought us another NC or 2....those were the ONLY 2 schools in the nation that had better talent(on paper) than SOS had during his tenure......
Now get an icepack for that un necessary case of asshurt you picked up somewhere....

Tennessee was the SEC team that almost always finished ahead of us. We were always second. UGa wasn't even on the radar screen.
Spurriers quips about recruiting were always directed at UTenn. The West was ****. I think Spurrier had one or two top classes. But mostly top 5. Again, normally 2nd in the SEC to Tenn (which chapped his ass lol).

We are currently 5th in the SEC in recruiting. Second in the East but WAY behind UGa.

With the current championship format, a goal naturally becomes becoming one of the top four teams in CFB. This is what has rendered 10 and 11 win seasons "not what they used to be" in many fans' minds. It has also cut the nuts out of the traditional big bowls unless they are hosting a playoff. The fact that we are in the strongest conference that regularly competes for and wins the NC makes the task even tougher, putting every coaching decision and every ancillary aspect of the program under the highest scrutiny continuously. My personal opinion is that our ascent to the realm of top four hinges not only on what Mullen does, but also how much longer Saban and Bama nail down a top spot. This year gave us a glimpse of the future without a dominant Bama. Next step for us is to win the east, going through UGA and then the conference. But a watered down SEC will always be tougher than a "strong" ACC or other major conference, as you can count on 4-5 teams that will perpetually be in the hunt. The others can't.

With all that said, I believe we've got a guy that can get us to the elite four level with, as several suggest, some tweaks to the staff and continued improvement to recruiting and portal usage, the latter having occurred this season. If we can stay healthy, we've got a great opportunity to, at a minimum, take at least the next step and win 12. If the OL and secondary play improves, then who knows? But everything is conjecture at this time and the reality is that a season plays out one week at a time. We should be excited, but still holding on to the reins IMO.

It isnt just the playoffs. We have added two games to the schedule since the phrase winning 10 games meant something. Most teams added two cupcakes.

No one talked about winning eight games as being a big deal in the 70s either, and winning 10 games today is like winning eight games then.
