The only thing that should be on your mind is getting out alive. Memphis Is constantly on the first 48
Long distance information, give me Memphis Tennessee
There's a really good breakfast place called Brother Juniper's near the University of Memphis. Best omelettes I've ever had. The Rendezvous is a neat downtown experience, but that's more of a touristy things to do. I always thought Central BBQ was the best. There are several BBQ places you can choose from. The original Corky's is another option.
If you want to checkout the nightlife, the you can go to Beale St downtown or hit up some of the bars in midtown. Young Ave Deli in midtown has great food and a cool atmosphere or it least it did several years ago. Haven't been there in a while.
If this is a family trip, then take your kids to the zoo. They actually have one of the better zoos in the country.
Since you're going to Oxford, be sure to get there a few hours early to check out the tailgating at the Grove.
I lived there for five years so you can trust me on this. There's three things to see in Memphis: The Mississippi River, Graceland, and where MLK was shot. You can do it all in about an hour. For any of you guys and gals that have been, any recommendations?
Obviously, Graceland is on my list but what else? I hear the BBQ is delish....staying there for the Ole Miss game and just decided to drive to and from Oxford
I forgot about the Pyramid, though Bass came after I left. In, what part of Memphis did you grow up? We were in temp quarters in Cordova and then built a house in Lakeland. We were very interested in an old house in the Central Gardens District, but it needed a little work, and we knew we'd be transferring back to DC in a few years so gave it a miss. It was a helluva a beautiful old home though. My personal favorites for BBQ
1. Rendezvous (if you like dry rubbed ribs) The grandfather
2. The Barbecue Station (home of the dancing pigs)
3. Central Barbecue
4. Leonards (since 1922)
5. Corky's
There are many more but all of these are really good.
For great music
Rum Boogie Cafe - Beale St.
B. B. Kings - Beale St.
Neil's Music Room - Out East
Lafayette's Music Room - Midtown
Earnestine & Hazel's
Family
The Pyramid Bass Pro Shop on the river (Amazing)
Zoo
Memphis was where I grew up and I'm up there several times a year visiting family. The city has made great strides the last five years. They still have a long way to go to undo the neglect by the creeps who took over the town for many years.

Seriously though, there are some other interesting spots depending on your interests. The Pink Palace (former home of the guy who started Piggly-Wiggly) is a decent museum and the model of the Mississippi river at Mud Island is pretty cool if it's a nice day (it's outside). Beale Street is worth checking out at night for some good music (and some not so good). Like @GatorJB mentioned if you're into animals, the zoo is actually very good - Fred Smith and his Mrs. (and his company) have dumped a lot money into it. As others mentioned, the Rendezvous is fun (and home of some of the world's rudest waiters), but the BBQ is better at Corkys' (for the ribs) and Central BBQ (for the pulled pork and smoked turkey - not to mention some of the best fries I've ever had). If you are staying downtown you should check out the Peabody Hotel; particularly to see the arrival or the departure of the ducks - it's stupid and fun all at the same time. Departure is better if only that it's a beautiful lobby in which to enjoy a cocktail which you may find more appropriate in the afternoon. Also downtown is a great restaurant (or used to be - we left in '08) called Felicia Suzanne's. One of the better dining experiences in the city.
Word to the wise; people are not exaggerating when they say it is a very dangerous city so always be alert. Downtown in the popular areas is as safe as any other large city but do not wander off the beaten path. It's the only city I have ever lived in where everybody knows the address of the jail (201 Poplar). I posted this once before but it bears repeating. A friend of mine used to joke that he went on a vacation to Florida once and saw a car that had a bumper sticker that said "I miss Memphis." So my friend said, 'I slashed his tires, smashed his windows, stole his radio, and left him a note that said 'I hope this helps.'" Most Memphians would nod rather than laugh at that joke. Having said all that, the non-criminal residents are some of the nicest folks I have ever been around and we really loved living there.
BTW - Mrs. G and I are also thinking of going to that game and also staying in Memphis. I'll let you know.
The Gators played Ole Miss when we were living there and some friends who were Ole Miss alums gave us a pair of tix. Unfortunately (for me) we could not find a baby sitter to stay with our kids all day (they were pretty little) so I stayed home and Mrs G. went went with one of her old sorority sisters. They said Oxford was a lot of fun (sniff)......Thank you very much for the info and yes, please do let me know if you go...Ole Miss is one of the few SEC towns I haven’t been to yet and I figure it will be many years until UF gets back there....that’s hilarious about the bumper sticker...and sad
