If you knew what 2 years into Mullen would be, would you have taken it?

Fantasy. SOS had several top classes. There were certainly years when we were #3 and they were #1 or what ever but we sure as fvkk never finished 6th-8th in the GD SEC.

We THINK he did, and he probably did, but the recruiting rankings industry as we know it didn’t begin until after 2000.

I read the first post only and scratched my head. Didn't read any of the others. How exactly would we have not taken it. I was lukewarm about the Mullen hire. But not now. We were a dumpster fire. The other coaches on our radar haven't done squat. Sure somewhere out there is the next genius coach. He may be an assistant somewhere or coaching a division X school. But only a soothsayer knows who he or they are. There's plenty we haven't done yet, but we are in a tough league with tough competition and some used car salesmen. It's too early to crown Mullen as a slam dunk choice, but he's getting there. The next three seasons will tell the tale.

As an aside. Law you need a vacation. Not from here. I always read your stuff. Just go on a trip and decompress. Or maybe you just like to stir the pot. In that case you get a Rivals 5 stars..

Were you not alive then? Didnt buy Moody's or Athlon books w the bluechippers rated in the spring? SI did it too. That goofy guy who always ranked ND #1 and ND's players top #3, Beano Cook. He did a newsletter I think. And most of them got interviewed from time to time.

The industry isnt what it is now, but it was there.

I forget when Rivals popped up.

We damn sure knew when we lost a player like Peter Warrick or whomever. It even made the Sun and maybe the Alligator's little soorts page.

We were told that Shipp and Olmstead were the #1 WR and QB in the country. (Even then I didnt like taking out of state players over more proven Florida products.)

Perhaps you just werent that into football and ignored it.

I was always the first in line at Publix for all the post signing day mags. I had a better handle on recruiting (at least I thought I did) back in the recruiting magazine days.

My take... I think Mullen is a much better coach than Sharkboy and MooseDump. But, I think he brought a sub-tier staff with him and we cannot beat Georgia, and reach Atlanta, until he recruits better and has a better group of coaches and coordinators... And, by recruiting better, I mean top three and better than Georgia.

Rivals and Scout came along in 2002. The print media has always taken a stab at it, but nowhere near the degree to which it’s scrutinized now.

Law, you mentioned Warrick back in the print media dark ages. There’s an even better example. Manning. Spurrier recruited the kid hard, but Archie wanted no part of his temperament.

I wasn't one of those guys. I knew they existed though. I occasionally saw the interviews with the talking heads debating it. was pretty busy back then I didn't have time or interest. probably a lot like AR is today.

Back then I figured we'll just get our share of the top loot out of Florida and we'll be fine.

We had some top guys leaving the state but not many.

I absolutely hated the Mullen hire, I was hoping for Frost or Kelly just like most of you other dumbasses. Thankfully the majority of us were wrong.

There's dozens of things Mullen has accomplished since he's been here that I never expected him to. Way too many to list for sure. But there's also 3 obvious things he's done that still give me reservation about him going forward.

The Mizzou game last year, the uga game this year and his QB selection both years. I'd be willing to bet if Frank's doesn't get his leg broke against Kentucky we'd all be singing a different tune today (everyone except donkey of course). We'd be sitting here a 7 or 8 win team tops. Him sticking with Frank's over Trask or even Jones to start this year is a major problem for me. We'll see going forward.

I'm actually a little bit fuzzy now. one of the clown wide receivers was a quarterback and did not sign with us because Booby had said Spurrier just wants to move him to wide receiver. There was also the Spurrier hates black quarterbacks allegations.

Of course, the kids signed with booby and booby moved him to wide receiver in spring training of the first year.

Always the liar.

let's take a stab at it. Pro:
beating cowbell as a first-year coach was pretty good;
beating LSU once was good;
beating Barn.

Con:
Ugh Kintucky
Ugh Mizzu
Ugly twice.

What else? Dozens?

Wikipedia says 1998 for rivals.

I don't really see scout info.

that's more congruent with my memory.

at one point they were trying to match the data to the teams of the post to the public, so university scouts could hone their search down to a smaller group of players the watch.

I don't think they anticipated the desire of the public to buy the info, or to view web pages and sell advertising.

The issue with black quarterbacks was always going to be whether you left the pocket too early. Spurrier is about as diametrically opposed to Mullen as you can get when it comes to the quarterback and running.

I was really into football back then. I really looked forward to the Recruiting mags, then the O&B games, then the pre-season mags.

Florida players, for the most part, stayed in Florida.

I said dozens of things I never expected him to accomplish, not things you never expected him to accomplish.

Didn't you predict 0-8 in the SEC last year? There's a few more unexpected accomplishments right there for you to add to your tally.

Just my opinion, but the recruiting mags (I can't remember their names) were great. Comparing the team recruiting evaluations between 3 or 4 publications (sole sources) was more productive than trying to compare all the minutia of todays "media".

BOOM. Stop the debate right there. Probably the most important dynamic of the last 10-15 years.
Ridiculous. I get it w scUM. They are poverty stricken down there.

No excuse for us

No, I said 7-5 but Dooley said winless any SEC after losing to Kintucky.

what are some of the dozens of things here?

I mean I'm not surprised when he loses a game to Kentucky or Mizzou, that's what his resume says, but I didn't expect it.
