Bam Hardmon who is a DL coach...MM who has engineer some real BAD defenses with Atlanta, Mike Peterson an OLB coach...

Why on earth would you suggest any of these guys other than that they were "Florida" guys...We don't need a "Florida" Guy...we need the best available DC and recruiter.

Charlie Strong's Team Defense Rank at Louisville, Texas, USF

Louisville: 18, 17, 37
Texas: 31, 87, 91
USF: 41, 95, 75

Basically this shows you what I've been saying all along. Strong's time has passed him by as a competent DC in this era.

Okay, you win. Sorry, I haven’t been tracking all the vital stats. I recall previous conversations indicating we’ve got some guys ready for the challenge. Maybe I misread those comments.

I think Marconand CJ seemed to be just killing time til the draft, unfortunately.

I HOPE Marco was just hurt.

I think Marco was likely injury. Seeing him return is my reasoning for that. Hendo had checked out mentally.

In all seriousness how many actual options are out there that would be a definite upgrade over Grantham if he does get a HC job? I think he's probably the best DC we've had since Dan Quinn (which isn't saying much) and be it his fault or someone else's has done it with a lot less talent than probably anyone at Florida since I can remember. Hell Donkey tells us daily this is the least talented team since the 80's but yet the total defense rank has went from what the 70's or 80's to low teens these past 2 years?

I know he's a fat red faced bastard that wears black on game day and that makes most peoples vaginas hurt but hell how much faith do you have in Mullen to actually hire someone better? I'd rather fire the safety coach, rb coach try and get upgrades at those positions and see what happens next year than have Grantham leave and take 3 or 4 coaches with him and have a major rebuild for next year.
Not to pick nits or anything, but the worst our defense ever got from a yardage standpoint was in 2017, when they were 31st in the country. Last year was 28th, this year was 9th. Other than those two years, we've pretty much always been top 15-20 in defense at worst every year no matter who the DC is. Losing Grantham wouldn't change that.

All of you hating on Grantham are going to come to regret it

The only way we regret this decision is if Mullen screws up the hire badly per Bait'n's remark:

how much faith do you have in Mullen to actually hire someone better

But, as Sas points out below, the Gator D, combined with mostly C-level SEC offenses results in UF almost always having a top 20 defense.

Last year was 28th, this year was 9th. Other than those two years, we've pretty much always been top 15-20 in defense at worst every year no matter who the DC is. Losing Grantham wouldn't change that.

Will our defensive recruiting from 2017-208 bite us this upcoming year, maybe. But, we will still only face 3-4 offenses all season that are particularly potent. Grantham didn't shine in those 3-4 so far. The next guy (hoping) will be judged on those games too.

I’m not aware of any defense that fared well with LSU this season. Our sin was allowing 279 yards through the air to a team that otherwise averaged 234, namely Georgia.

Even that wasn’t a total sin. Our offense let us down in Jax every bit as much as the defense.

Jax was a complete team failure... LSU was beating the schit out of everyone's defense.

Let’s imagine Grantham spent his entire career at Virginia Tech, his alma mater. Would he be taking the beating here that he does? I seriously doubt it.

His mortal sin, besides being a bit too emotional on the sidelines at times, is having worn the red and black. There are certain people here who are unable to look past that.

Grantham is a top 20 DC in the country. Some would argue top 10, but I don't care to argue or make a list. My point is that he's not irreplaceable. And Mullen should be able to hire someone who did just as well if not better.

I honestly dont care what he looks like, how he acts, or what school he coached/played for or at. I care about getting off the field on 3rd and long. I care about a defense playing smart and sound in space, taking good angles, wrapping up and making tackles. And I care about safeties and corners that properly play their assignments and are coached to understand how to be in position to make a play or at least make a TD saving tackle if/when burned or beaten by an offensive play call that exposed the weakness in the defensive play call. For these reasons, I'm fine with him becoming Coach failstate.

No dwags is an easy rule and would have cleaned up alot of the Lost Decades.

You shouldntry being a Gator yourself some time. Apparently you and Fooley are the only ones not aware that we Gators hate Dwags.

You could be right, you could be wrong. One thing we do know, lots of variables to consider.

Let me share this.

2016 Mississippi State defense (before Grantham)
Total rank: 93rd
Passing yards per game: 289

2017 Mississippi State defense (after Grantham )
Total rank: 10th
Passing yards per game: 175

A couple of comments from the twitterverse re Grantham:

-He’s gonna spend the offseason trying to figure out how to blitz on offense

-Mississippi State was staring at a 3rd and 9 in their search for a new head coach, but, in hiring Grantham, have managed to pick up the first down.

-I guess next year 3rd down will actually be a meaningful down in Jacksonville

-Grantham needs to be a Canadian coach. Since they punt on third down, he won’t get abused on it so often.

Yeah I'm not sure, I believe it was "team defense" or "total defense" but those rankings were

2017 - 69th
2018 -20th
2019 - 7th

I think that’s scoring defense, which makes sense in 2017 given all the defensive touchdowns scored against us.

Its pretty clear there is a large consensus about grantham and how effective his defenses are once theyve done the job on 1st and 2nd down. Stereotypes exist for a reason...
