[Editor's note: These rankings are based heavily on the individual player's PFF grades for the season. The avoidance of negatively graded plays, the propensity for positively graded plays, the strength of competition and value towards a team victory are all heavily factored, as well. A player's effect on their team's offense, their expected points added per dropback (or rushing attempt) and overall accuracy from our advanced ball-charting data are also considered among other factors.]

66. KYLE TRASK, FELEIPE FRANKS – FLORIDA
Preseason Rank: 43; Week 6 Rank: 58; Week 12 Rank: 65
As much as Florida fans clamored for Franks to be removed for Trask, we may be at a time where those same Gator fans are asking for Emory Jones instead of Trask after his average performance in 2019. Jones’ upside is one thing – and Trask’s play this past season certainly wasn’t terrible as he completed 66.7% of his passes for 25 touchdowns and just seven interceptions. However, Trask launched just nine big-time throws compared to his 22 turnover-worthy passes, a mark that certainly isn’t pleasing on the eyes. Still, when he did find his stride, some of his passes were as pretty as any in the conference, he’ll just need to have more of those big-time throw moments instead of the play above if he wants to quiet Gator fans wanting Jones. Good thing for Trask: he has the arm to do so.

Always thought PFF was a reliable site. Hard to reconcile a 25-7 ratio with a ranking of 68. Also, he made 22 turnover worthy passes but less than one third of those actually resulted in turnovers? How do we know that the site doesn't just miss estimate his accuracy?

Read a few times that he was just a systems qb. Odd:

1. JOE BURROW – LSU
Preseason Rank: 17; Week 6 Rank: 1; Week 12 Rank: 1
There has never been a season quite like Burrow’s season in 2019. Not Mayfield. Not Newton. Not Tebow. Not Winston nor Mariota. No season in history has a quarterback risen the way that Burrow did in 2019, and his season was capped by a National Championship victory over Clemson. No season in history has been as decorated as Burrow’s. No season has anyone dominated a set of statistics or advanced analytics the way Burrow did in 2019. You have to search long and hard to find a category that Burrow isn’t the highest-graded player in the PFF data. He’s the highest-graded player on throws 10 or more yards downfield, the highest-graded player under pressure, the highest-graded player on horizontal leads, the highest-graded player in the first quarter, the most accurate quarterback we’ve ever charted. The list could go on and on for Burrow and his historic season in 2019 to 2020, but I’ll leave you with the following statement. When the grading criterion for the rest of the quarterbacks went as such: “Where did he rank next to Burrow?” – you know just how special of a season it was for Broadway Jeaux, Joe Burreaux.

LSU is going to bomb hard next season. No Burrow or Brady? No way they’re nearly as good.

Probably factors in drops/PBUs by DBs.

It just shows how good he fit Joe Brady's system. He looked like JB4 last year.

What it doesn't seem to factor in is Trask's growth during the season. While he's still good for a cringe worthy pass or two, we don't know how many times the WR ran the wrong route vs. Trask making the wrong read. What we did see is improvement throughout the year behind a poor OL (albeit better in pass pro than road grading). The biggest improvement seemed to be in pocket presence and limiting his TO's.

Although we live in an age of statistical ratings and comparisons as seemingly the ultimate barometer of players' and teams' merit, articles like this come along. Hard to imagine that the team that finished in the top ten with eleven wins could have done so with the #66 QB...and not much of a running game throughout the season to support the offense. I used to hear the old line that "statistics are for losers." This article reinforces that notion as far as I'm concerned.

It felt to me like Trask had forced some balls this season but had gotten lucky to a degree in that it hadn’t really hurt us. That is purely subjective and unreliable, but it wouldn’t surprise me if a deep analysis of his performance discovered the same thing. Now that is not to say that we might not have lost more games if he had been less aggressive due to serious deficits in other areas. It’s hard to know whether all of this is a credit or debit or both where Mullen is concerned, but I do hope that this season has been a highly compressed learning experience for Trask and that hopefully he will capitalize on it and be even more productive this coming year.

I'm pretty sure 97% of football experts agree with the PFF rankings. Anyone who disagrees is a QB denier and should be ostracized. After all, the science is settled.{/SARCASM}

I doubt they factored in the fact he only had about 2.5 seconds on most throws to get a read and throw.

How did he rank among those that were perennial backups since high school? How did he rank among those making their first start in college? Or having less than X snaps before taking over the reins? Probably 1st

Yes he got lucky on quite a few that could have been picked off, but overall for the lack of previous playing time and the speed of live game, his decision .making was fantastic. Also due to our Oline Mullen designed and called plays where he got rid of the ball quickly on most plays, so there weren't as many deep shots and defenses knew it so played tight coverage.

I don't GAF what Trask's ranking was, i just know without him we were probably a 4 loss team, no buzz, recruits not looking seriously, back in the rut again. When we win a championship in the near future he will not get the credit deserved for making this season what it was and the path that he kept the program on.

This too, stats are for losers is more than just a cliche.

One of several issues I have with this ranking is that a QB is judged on what someone sitting behind a monitor determines should be a pass that should have been intercepted but wasn't. At the same time no credence is given to when a Receiver makes a great catch on a poorly thrown ball. I watched LSU play multiple times last season and in every game I saw his receivers go after 50/50 balls and win almost everytime. The receptions are just counted as good throws by the QB rather than great efforts by the receiver.

It happened several times in the NC game for both teams. Lawrence has been described as not having a good game in the NC, I've re-watched the game and at least 3 times his receivers had hands on catchable balls but didn't make the catch. Anyone of those in-completions could have impacted the outcome of the game in a positive way but didn't. LSU receivers made the hard catches and Burrow got the credit and win.

I, too, noticed that every brilliant catch was credited to Burrow. Maybe they should have been, but I didn't know how to tell the difference.

That is the issue in my mind. someone determined the passes that should have been intercepted but made no effort to identify when the QB got credit when his receiver caught a ball that shouldn't have been caught.

Sounds strange but I think it's a reasonable "take" on the grading process.

I believe those things are taken into account. I believe it was NBC Sport or the NFL network did something on the grading processes for NFL quarterbacks about a year ago (during a slower point in the year). Where if the receiver goes up and gets the ball that was a questionable pass the receiver gets a positive, while also detracting the quarterback. I don't remember the specifics, I want to say Chris Collinsworth was the one interview and explaining since he is also a member of PFF.

That article makes it sound like trask is a meh QB. Ridiculous. He was fantastic this year and will only get better with experience. Best QB we've had since Tebow and best passer since Leak.

Trask meant a lot more to the Gators than any statistics could ever quantify. Some of the most important things can't be measured and put down on a piece of paper.
