Disclaimer: I am not a NFL fan.

I love American football but I've been moving away from the NFL for several years. The reasons are many and have been discussed here but I may have finally given up completely when I read that Mahomes will probable get 40/50 million a year to play a game. I don't care how dangerous the game is or how much the owners make, no one is worth 50 million a year for playing a game. When will the public wake up and stop supporting this madness?
The only answer I can think of is that football causes some kind of drug release in our minds and we are addicted to it.

It's out of control!!!!

Rant over..... :deadhorse:

Who cares what he makes? Why do you care? What does it matter?

Yeah, I’m more in line with this thinking. My preference or not, let the market decide his value. If they have the money to pay him, and are willing to take that risk, so be it.

Also, Andy Reid is terrible in post season, so unfortunately he’ll probably have a ceiling his whole career.

It's all free market stuff. When you factor in television ratings, the gate, merchandise, etc, for the Chiefs, that salary is probably a bargain.

Judge Judy makes over 40 million a year, but she brings in faaaaar more than that in advertising. Hence, you could make an argument that she's actually underpaid.

Ok with me just as long as if we pay college athletes, we make sure to pay them all the same to avoid locker room discord.

At the risk of definitely derailing this thread, Rick Wells has a scholarship/room/food package worth by some estimates to be as much as 300k, plus a free platform to make a multi million dollar career. And in return, he’s provided us 6 catches. So if this year is anything like the previous twelve he’s been at UF, and he contributes a catch or two, he’ll have been paid nearly 40k per reception.

We’ve been through this before and I’m never going to change your mind, which is fine. Just pointing out some financial data concerning college athletes not getting “paid”.

You got me pegged 100% for nearly derailing this thread, but it kind of needs derailing when any fans that spend this much time focused on a sport then complain the sport gets too much attention.

But, my attempt to derail was more based on the fairness arguments we went through about paying all the college kids the same amount. Your Wells point reinforces mine. In an open system, OBJ’s car dealership isn’t throwing cash at Wells, yet he still got a great education value. On that we also very much agree.

We both derailed it, maybe even more so me. But I’m guessing you were being facetious with the comment about all of them being paid equally to avoid locker room discord. Because what you described is the exact opposite. Yes, Rick Wells wouldn’t be paid by a dealership while Jefferson would. But all the more reason there would be frustration when he walks to class while VJ pulls up in a Benz. That’s exactly why it would be a problem.

You’re also not factoring in all the 4-5*s that simply don’t pan out or work hard and go through the motions. If they’re paid in their freshman year(cough cough, to sign here) and then don’t fulfill their end to the extent deemed necessary by said dealership, then you’re ok with them being cut by the dealership and the contract voided, right? Because that’s exactly what’s coming down the pike if Mahomes doesn’t perform. And additionally, since it’s become just a straight up, open business, why should we keep Wells on when he isn’t provided anything of value? If kids can be paid like adults, then they should be treated like adults. So in your scenario, Wells doesn’t even get what you envision. Schools have no obligation currently to renew athletic scholarships every year, but do so out of ethics and perception. In that case, Wells is at a Troy type program, with the NFL an afterthought and a degree that even if he gets it, won’t be nearly what he thought originally he’d be getting.

So if both parties are ready for the real world about 5 years earlier than expected, then so be it. But considering we have 30+ year olds currently unable to handle the real world, I say it’s a bad idea.

Ftr, I may have misread or misinterpreted your post. If so, disregard.

@soflagator - I’d say we see elements of this differently, and you are reading a bit into my post that isn’t intended. The issue is the different view is on the nuance and that I don’t hold as strong a view on the bigger pay/no pay issue. But, I can’t help myself about pointing out silly inconsistencies (not yours actually) about which, if I keep going, go beyond derailing the thread.
