At the risk of definitely derailing this thread, Rick Wells has a scholarship/room/food package worth by some estimates to be as much as 300k, plus a free platform to make a multi million dollar career. And in return, he’s provided us 6 catches. So if this year is anything like the previous twelve he’s been at UF, and he contributes a catch or two, he’ll have been paid nearly 40k per reception.

We’ve been through this before and I’m never going to change your mind, which is fine. Just pointing out some financial data concerning college athletes not getting “paid”.
This goes for any career field. You have great workers, avg and terrible. I'm all for letting the market decide. I guarantee you Wells wouldn't come close to make what Pitts would make. In fact a scholarship is a cap and restriction that allows the unproductive to maintain the same status as some who is productive

Fun fact about Mahomes. If he wins the Super Bowl, he'll be the first quarterback in history to play in the Big 12 and win a Super Bowl. In fact, the only Super Bowl-winning QB in history who went to a school currently in the Big 12 was Jeff Hostetler, who went to WVU. But WVU was an independent while Hostetler played there.

I chose the wrong business. Really need to look into lines of work where one impressive feat qualifies me for $50m/yr.
One impressive feat? You can count the amount of great NFL quarterbacks in the entire world on one hand.

They are worth the money.

I was giving AR crap about his comment. Given the current market for QBs, Mahomes is worth it.

Free market...once people stop showing up and buying their jerseys they will deserve less. You deserve what the market says you deserve. Sounds like you’re just jealous

If you're addressing my OP, I'm an old fart, why should I be jealous? I just think it's crazy to pay anyone 50 million to play a stupid game while we are paying teachers 50/60 thousand a year. I know that's not a valid comparison but it comes close to my point. I do believe in a Market driven system but this just boggles my mind.

It’s not crazy to pay anyone 50 million if they are bringing in more than 50 million. He’s bringing a lot more than 50 million a year to the Chiefs.

Teachers don’t bring in any revenue, and only about 1 in 10,000 actually work hard.

I usually go to one or two NFL games a year w/ a buddy that's a huge fan (I could care less). I'm just blown away by the costs. We went to NY and saw the Giants/Patriots, paid $425/ticket for upper section around the 25 yard line (2016 season maybe). Last year we went to Jacksonville for the Jags/Pats, paid $220/each for similar seats. This year we went to Baltimore for Ravens/Pats, paid $200 for similar upper deck seats....and went to Cincinnati in Dec for Bengals/Pats, paid $130 for great seats, 12th row, 45 yard line behind the Pats bench.

Anyhow, the ticket cost plus beer/food/parking/hotel, etc is outrageous. Luckily, I can afford once or twice a year. But imagine a blue collar working man wants to take his family to a game in NY or NE? You're talking around $600-1000 or so for a family of 4.

That's my only issue w/ these escalating salaries - cost of attending.

Baltimore did have very affordable concessions though ($6 beer, $5 hamburgers, $3 hot dogs, $3 cokes, etc) which was nice. I hear the new Atlanta stadium is the same.

The teams are making so much money off of television rights and what not that they dont even try to keep costs down for the attendees. Go or dont go, they are still making a killing. at some point something has to change. Either costs level off and come down or people will just stop going. How can anyone justify paying that type of money... I mean over a hundy to watch the bungles??? GTFOH! :lmao:

We missed KO because the prices were so high (it was the Pats, so there were about 30% Pats fans there).....I couldn't believe it. I figured they'd be giving away tickets! The stadium was pretty full except for the club seats, which were about 10% full.

Ok with me just as long as if we pay college athletes, we make sure to pay them all the same to avoid locker room discord.
As long as a program can find enough recruits that are willing to play for room and board, a free ride and a national stage to show what they can do, there’s absolutely no reason to pay them.

Except for that little aspect of competing with the school that offers all that plus more $.

The amount of posters on here arguing against masks because it is government control and sheep accepting that control, ...

Yet, when it comes to college athletes, accept what the governing body gives you or be called an ingrate.

It’s enough for us fans to feel the players are treated fairly and football entertains us.

I truly don’t care if the players are paid And think there is an amuteuriam argument at play, but the arguments against it I find amusing compared to some of the other points made on this website.
