Just wow. Can’t come close to comparing anything like this in the sports world I’ve known. Thurman Munson? Nah, not nearly as much of a global name. Probably time to start celebrating his life and achievements.

The Kobe I knew during the latter part of his career, after Shaq, was remarkable. The guy was almost like watching MJ in the clutch moments of games. He lived for them, and he made the most of them.

Sadly they are all tragic and heart breaking, but the one that immediately came to my mind was Roberto Clemente and his tragic death on the way to give aid to people in Central America I believe.

Look, I've never been a Kobe guy but this is just Heart Breaking, on several levels. RIP all who perished and prayers for their families and loved ones.

Forgot about that one. Was driving around on a frigid winter day when I heard that on the radio.

This one strikes a chord with me. I think he was the first famous person in my life who I was interested in and died accidentally. I was pretty young, but a huge baseball fan and had watched him tear up the Orioles in the WS the year before. But as great as Clemente was at baseball, Kobe was a bigger star. I think one would have to look at some of the premature deaths of music stars to find an apt comparison.

I feel like this is going to be similar to what happened with Stevie Ray Vaughn’s death. Helicopter was too low and realized it too late.

Was just about to post that. Skynyrd comes to mind, too.

That dumbass pilot didn't have enough fuel on board, had nothing to do with weather I don't think. Stevie Rays was very similiar. Eric Clapton gave Stevie his seat I believe.

There is probably no disputing that Kobe was a bigger star with the way media and TV was as opposed to when Clemente played baseball when WS games were played during the day, but Clemente was a tremendous star who had exactly 3000 hits and played at times when the mound was higher. with guys like Bob Gibson twirling 1.5 ERA's He is also considered one of the best defensive outfielders ever and arguably had the best throwing arm of any outfielder in history. But all of these tragic events far outweigh the stardom all of these people achieved in their professions.

Wow the LA County sheriff just had a presser and said NINE people were on board...that is a lot for a helicopter....let's hope his other daughters weren't involved

I spoke to my Gator son (2010 grad) and he said that this accident for him is one of those events that he will always remember where he was, and what he was doing when Kobe died. Being originally from Pittsburgh I brought up Clemente, and how I remembered every detail of that event. Clemente was my sports hero , and for many fans like my son, Kobe was their hero.

Sad day for his family and all who died in the accident.
