I get what you are saying about small sample sizes but even in the scenario you gave - that’s 4 out of 5 “hits”, which is still really good. Everyone misses on hires and Mullen fixed it quick (assuming dipsh!t is the DC before Grantham at MSU).

You guys don't think he picked his first 9 coaches too? How many misses does Knox over Seider count as? Just one or does he get extra credit?

I have a friend who is an MSU alum and covered local sports in the area. He insists the Sirmon hire was because Stricklin wouldn't give Mullen the budget to hire a DC.

I’d count that as at least 3 misses - losing Seider is one and allowing that idiot to coach two different units is two. But he sure does seem like a nice guy!

Edit: maybe its 4. Recruiting has been so bad I think it qualifies as its own miss too.

That doesn't surprise me much.

Paper budgets passed a year and half ago does seem important to Fooley Jr.

I am not disagreeing with your assessment regarding Cousin Eddie and for the sake of my post I will assume you are 100% correct. Is this a trait of a TOP CEO? I think not. I feel it is clearly a passive trait. Sure loyalty is a great characteristic in personal friendships, but in business it can be harmful. And make no mistake about it, college football is strictly business. If Cousin Eddie "clearly sees" as you claim, then his REACTION to those sights is actually harmful to the program and team and allows others the opportunity to pass us by. Doing nothing is clearly a strategy, but if it needs to be done, then it MUST be done.
agree, and that was the implication of my entire post. its not a good look to know there are issues and not address them head on.

Given the swiftness of this hire, I wonder if Scott had gotten a “Start looking” directive from Mullen. That’s what I’ve done when a good person needs to go but I’d rather not fire them.
Considering the position groups knox and english preside over, and their recruiting abilities, you really think that mullen looked at his staff, determined there were some issues that needed to be addressed, and started by jettisoning... Larry Scott?

Scott got an HC offer and took it. That's it. And frankly, if your theory was actually true, I think all of us would be questioning what the hell Dan is doing even more than we already are.

I mean that will always be terrible. Every replacement hire has been 100% better and great so far. Seems like it’s going to be a slow turnover but at least it’s positive

the Lost Decades continue.

I agree with you there's not the slightest sense of urgency in anything about this athletic department or coaching staff. They are perfectly happy McElwaining with "10 Win Seasons!!!!!"

Just think, when we get to being Cal East as you believe, you might look back at these Lost Decades rather fondly.

Oh, I'm sure we will.

I'm not sure if you're old enough to remember but Cal v USC and USC v UCLA used to be huge games. Now they are jokes.

Vandy has always sucked, and some say we are shooting to be the other Vandy. We do have slightly better facilities than Vandy, though their dorms are far superior.

it's why I prefer to say we're aiming to be the UCLA or Cal of the East.

Who says that? Anyone respectable or significant?
Say EXACTLY those words? No. Say they only care about academics and only want an athletic dept dhat doesnt embarass them? Plenty of very important people.

But the result is Vandy or Cal.

Everyone wants to work for that boss that won't fire you even if you stop performing on the job before you retire, right?

The real OCD nutcases that win championships generally aren't good guys and are no doubt hell to work for, unfortunately.

There is so much work to be done in such a little time, the only way to really have a quality of life for a coaching and support staff is to hire a large one. Otherwise they have to work 18 hours a day 7 days a week or just be underprepared in either game prep or recruiting. This is how Saban seems to take mediocre coaches into "the system" and somehow get performance out of the whole.

Another point, likely he sees more longevity with Mullinz at UF vs Mack Brown at UNC. We know that Mullinz doesn't fire coaches and the AD doesn't fire underperforming HCs.
