'Hard to reconcile': The ACC joins the Big Ten in support...

Two of the five P5 conferences have backed a proposal to allow a one-time immediate eligibility transfer for all NCAA sports. Currently, only CFB, MBB, WBB, baseball, and hockey require the redshirt for transfers. Earliest this can be adopted is Jan 2021. Chaos to ensue or much needed reform? I think its both - it will be painful at first but will eventually level out.

might make recruiting more, honest? A kid gets sold a story, gets to campus and it isn't like he was told/promised... in that case, it would be ok. I also think it would be great if a bunch of bama recruits took the bagman's money then bailed :)

Not sure it would hurt Bama much since they produce results but UGA would be destroyed. Hard to keep lying to kids if your best accomplishment is winning a down division.

personally i think there should be no restrictions on kids transferring, athlete or not.
I do. If they’re guaranteed a 4 year scholarship, then there has to be restrictions. If you want to go to an annual scholarship based on performance, then I’m all for free agency.

I’m good with a free one time transfer but there has to be a consequence at some point since these schools are spending so much money on each athlete. It’s still a contract at the end of the day.

a lot of schools do just that. Bama doesnt give a 4 year scholarship as i understand it. The ship is renewable each year but doesn't have to be. This is what I've heard anyway. There was a thread on the board a while back discussing how foley required 4 year guarantees for each kid and how that set us back compared to other schools who dont.

I know we’re supposed to bash Foley at every opportunity but there’s no way he makes those decisions on his own. The administration sets policy.

I've read a few articles about the impacts this will have. The biggest factor that will eliminate a mass exodus is the 25 player 'initial counter' issue. There's talk to change that (increase it, or eliminate it all together). If it stays as is, it will be hard for kids to move at will - because they have to find a landing spot. This is happening now w/ the current set up of the transfer portal. Obviously, a star player won't have a problem - but a backup OL or something like that may not find many takers. Also, schools are only allowed to host a certain number of 'official visits' - so many of these transfers will have to do unofficial visits to potential landing spots.

I think the biggest impact here is going to be G5 and FCS/1AA players looking to move to a bigger school (vs. P5 to P5 type transfers). A lot of these under-recruited 2-star (or low 3-star) kids will turn into stars at their lower level school and want to move up to play with the big boys (like D'Eriq King going from Houston to Miami, for example). - and the big schools will fight over these kids (you get a proven talent who should make an immediate impact vs. a HS kid who may take two or three years to develop).

Also will be interesting to see if kids will follow a coach (such as Tucker leaving Colorado to go to MSU).

UConn:

25 UConn players have entered portal since December.

Twenty-five UConn players have entered the transfer portal since the start of December, per a source. In total, 26 Huskies have opted to leave the program since the start of this most recent transfer cycle, which began Oct. 15.

26 and counting: Explaining UConn's transfer portal exodus

Not really, if they pay them to come there they will pay them to stay, unless of course they don't care if they leave or not.

Report: Vote to make all transfers immediately eligible pushed back two months

Report: Vote to make all transfers immediately eligible pushed back two months - CollegeFootballTalk | NBC Sports

COVID-19 has put all of American life on hold, and the NCAA’s legislative agenda is not immune.

In particular, college athletes hoping to obtain immediate eligibility upon transferring may have to wait a little longer.

According to Jon Rothstein of CBS Sports, the NCAA is discussing pushing the vote that would grant all college athletes a 1-time transfer exception from its planned date of April back to June.

The reason for the vote is that the NCAA has gradually broken down the year-in-residence barrier that ruled the day for decades. It started with the graduate transfer exception more than a decade ago, and continued more recently when the NCAA adopted legislation that would allow players to seek exemptions if they had a sick family member back home, if their academic well-being was threatened on their original campus, or other similar cases.

In reality, the exception proved to boil down to which families could hire the right representation and which could not.

While there is theoretically nothing stopping the NCAA from holding a remote vote, there is the practical reality that there are simply more pressing matters at hand.
