You listed what you believe was the greatest sports upset of all time then asked if there was a bigger upset. Qualifier was needed for “bigger upset”.

Again, not even close... not even in the same solar system... not even in same galaxy... not even in same universe...
Biggest upset for me. When SOS resigned after hammering Maryland in the Orange Bowl and Rex was coming back the next year.
True... I could never supplant him as lead ass, not sure anyone could. We already have one ass on this site; we don’t need another. ;)
The US hockey upset was huge.
Tyson/Douglas was a biggie as was a Harbaugh coaches Stanford team beating USC football about 10-12 years ago.
And they demolished the NHL teams they played and smoked our Olympic team in the exhibition game 10-3 just two weeks before the Olympic game. Those were upsets, but in regards to team sports I do not think anything comes close to the US Hockey team in 1980. In regards to boxing, yes there have been plenty of upsets, but in one on one matches, one punch can do it. I am not saying that is what happened. Stanford beating USC was huge yes, but both D 1 teams and shyt happens. I think that Chaminade beating UVA in Hoops was bigger than Stanford over USC. yes it was in Hawaii, but you are talking #1 in D1 Hoops against a D 20 team basically. The only commonality was age.
But the US Hockey thing was genuine college ams against Russian pros. Most of those guys on the Soviet team would have been in the NHL had they been allowed. They were much older and already pros in their own country. Meanwhile only some of the US team members eventually played in the NHL and very few if any were really stars.
Love ya man, and I watched both events live (was in Gainesvlle for the Douglas-Tyson fight), but it's not even close. Massive upset... in the Top 10, probably Top 3 of all time, but not even close to us beating the Soviet team.sure
Hard to beat the hockey upset but up there would be the 69 Mets. That was such a great series. One of my favorites.
I agree with all the other examples cited, but they are all "pro vs pro" examples. 1980 hockey was college kids, that had not payed as a team, vs pros that had played as a team for YEARS.Hard to beat the hockey upset but up there would be the 69 Mets. That was such a great series. One of my favorites.

Those of us old enough to remember can probably tell you where they were when they heard the news. (I was in the kitchen of my parents house and heard it on the radio.) It was that big a deal. Believe it or not, the game was broadcast on a delay, so many folks watched knowing how it was going to end.I was only 5 when that Hockey game was played. So I can only go off what you guys say.
what an amazing feeling that must have been. I still count the medals we win during summer Olympics. Beating Russia is like us beating FSU if FSU was a bigger program. But in a national scale. With patriotism pouring on top.
I still get jazzed when I see Ricky beat up on Drago.
Didn’t they beat one of those great O’s teams?
Yes the Orioles were loaded and won 109 games. The Miracle Mets took them down. Donn Clendenon was MVP. Seaver, Kooseman, Cleon Jones, Tommy Agee, Ron Swoboda, etc. Loved that team.
I was five and remember that series. Brooks Robinson was always a favorite of mine, but had no ties to either team. Was a Cardinals fan at the time.Yes the Orioles were loaded and won 109 games.
