My question is how the two are similar? Did the people enslaved in Africa break the law? And who is supposed to feel guilty for people’s bad behavior? Not understanding the logic of this type of mindset. Unless the end game is to create a victim culture and hatred for White people there is no credence to this. Minds are a terrible thing to waste; especially when you spend time looking for ways to be a victim of anything.

According to the NAACP they commit more crimes than white folks
  • In 2014, African Americans constituted 2.3 million, or 34%, of the total 6.8 million correctional population.
  • African Americans are incarcerated at more than 5 times the rate of whites.
  • The imprisonment rate for African American women is twice that of white women.
  • Nationwide, African American children represent 32% of children who are arrested,
42% of children who are detained, and 52% of children whose cases are judicially
    waived to criminal court.

Not relevant to these stats perhaps, but certainly to the discussion is how much more blacks are the victims of crime per capita than whites.

Therein lies the rub...the biggest harm to black society is this victim culture...and yet the politically correct society we live in fosters victim status and creates dependance by assuming correctly; the easiest option is to never accept anything is your fault...and that creates the need for a straw man...it’s a vicious and pitiful cycle that breeds intolerance and ignorance by default...Marxist ideology at its core...Che Guevara would be proud

We need Av to give us his thoughts on whether our country should incarcerate blacks at a higher rate for committing crimes against fellow blacks at such a high rate. Or, should we just not police the black community?

Unfortunately, blacks, as is the case for all races perhaps, are identified by the extremes when considered by others. From my experiences in education, I have seen a steady increase in the victimhood used to excuse the lack of academic effort and self-control where disciplinary matters are concerned. The real victims are those black students who strive to excel as students and citizens. They are looked upon as "Uncle Toms" by their peers who attempt to drag them back into the crab pot.

The communities that many of our black students come from are miniature versions of the Chicagos and Baltimores that we read and hear about. Poverty, drugs, crime, and urban decay are the norm. Law enforcement is lambasted for not being able to do anything about the crimes, but no one ever sees what goes on to provide assistance. The only consistent meal many of the kids get is at school. There is little to no pride in the communities and homes in which many live. The US government is often the largest "employer." It is a vicious cycle that can be impossible to escape.

There are obviously many factors that affect the plight of blacks. I don't know what the experts might think is #1, but my personal opinion is the lack of responsible males in the family dynamic. I've seen hundreds of parents in thirty years of dealing with student issues, but almost exclusively it is a mother, grandmother, or aunt. There rarely is a male parent in the picture. Imagine the effect this has on the children, especially the young men. There is no one to provide them with a positive role model; thus, they seek acceptance and guidance from wherever they can find it and the reinforcement is all too often negative.

I don't know exactly how to effect a consistent positive change. I know that it is not impossible to overcome the aforementioned lack of positive male influences. I am a product of a single parent home and have been able to overcome that deficit. It was not without struggle or stigma, but it was made clear to me early on that there would be no one paying my way and if I was going to make it, it was up to me. I was fortunate to have grandparents that helped provide morals and a work ethic along with teachers and coaches who showed some interest. The latter two are available today, but they seem to pale in comparison to the many paths of least resistance. The bottom line is that the best way to not be a victim is to...not be a victim. But it still requires enough positive influences and these seem to be scarce in many communities these days.

This is exactly the reason and also for many young kids of any race. Which is why teachers and coaches are more important now than ever before. We need mentors in the worst way. And even if there is a male role model being positive is not always a given. My wife's father treated her awful and the effects are life long. In my decades of elementary education I witnessed hundreds of kids starved for love or attention. Now with phones in everyone's hands the future looks bleak for many kids growing up. One of the keys to me is middle school. We should focus our resources there in terms of activities and things we can do to get kids involved in a positive way. But let me say this. What Cover said is spot on. These social issues with many black Americans is entrenched and destructive. I have a very close friend who spent 4 decades in schools. His last few years he had classes of young black males where he taught them social skills of manners and used coats and ties and to foster some self respect. He was an innovator and could connect with neglected children. Parents loved him.

I don’t either but I’ve been developing an idea. I think a big issue is networking. Most of my opportunities in life - vocational and personal - have come through networking.

How does a kid from a decrepit neighborhood ever meet or work with a successful person? The decimation of black role models, especially men, kills much of the natural flow in those areas. Government programs have had ruinous effects in that regard.

There are ways, there are programs. But not nearly enough. I don’t think it should come through government, but nonprofits including churches can do much more to bridge those gaps.
