Grow 3 or 4 more sets of eyes. Over the years I've had 5 friends die on bikes, most hit by cars. They were all a lot younger than you.

I tried to stay out of this thread because I hate telling people they shouldn't do something....all that said I've had several friends who begged me to get a street bike and ride with them over the years(we grew up riding dirt bikes/motoX)…..Everyone of them has had severe wrecks and NONE of them the riders fault.....btw one of them died from his injuries. Ox is right dude, get a convertible, the sensation is very close to being on a bike and it's a hell of a lot safer when a blind old lady decides to hit you head on... This was from a 35-40mph collision with another car.....If a 4000# car looks that bad can you imagine what a 500# motorcycle with rider would look like?

I rode a motorcycle until some idiot car driver riding with me on a 2 lane road decided to turn left, suddenly, without looking. I was riding right next to the drivers door. All he had to do was look left before turning. He hit me. I dropped the bike and slide across the asphalt on my left ankle under the bike. I still remember looking out of my helmet and visor, while sliding across the asphalt, at the ground going by. I had leather gear on. Luckily it was low speed, 30 mph, or it would have been much worse.

I had other close calls. I drove a bike until I had a kid.

Learn to drive VERY defensive. Every car you are around can kill you. By mistake or carelessness.

Like almost all men, there’s an instinct to want to ride a motorcycle. I just could never justify the risk. If I ever did, it would be one of the 3-wheeled variants (two wheels in the front). I think those are cool, and a little bit safer.

But I agree with this thread 1000%. Wind in your face and hair is great, but get a Jeep or other convertible and buckle in.

Honestly I decided early on I'd never ride a bike on the streets. Seems like everybody I knew that rode walked with a limp. But since I turned 50 I've heard the inevitable call of Harley Davidson. Just wait, it will happen to you. In any case I'd rather ride dirt bikes and may go down that path. For now I just wanna learn to ride, maybe I'll get a street bike, maybe not. Seems all my friends ride now so I'd only be riding in groups. And the lure of riding with friends up to Daytona on a bike is irresistible.

Do the trail riding! Much more enjoyable. Ocala NF has some nice ones, or used to. But I agree with you. Age does funny things to you.

Do you consider that safer?

My brother in law has broken damn near every bone in his body on dirt bikes.
Sounds like "operator error" is the likely cause and wouldn't be shocked if alcohol is regularly involved.
